    Abolishing green rates : the effects on cereals, sugar, and oilseeds in West Germany

    In 1987 the European Community began the ambitious task of forging a single market for goods and services across the national borders of its member states by 1992. Substantive reform of the Community's Common Agricultural Policy - necessary for the full integration of existing markets - has not yet been accomplished and has proven difficult to achieve. Creating a truly"common"agricultural policy in the European Community requires, at a minimum, eliminating price differences resulting from country- and commodity-specific exchange rates, known as"green rates."The authors discuss the various policy instruments that complicate the effects of these policy-determined price differences on crop production and the demand for inputs. They present a model that estimates the cross-commodity biases created by multiple policy instruments and that quantifies the effects of removing green-rate differentials in what was West Germany. The effects of price changes on domestic production are statistically significant in the model, although quantitatively small.     Atomic force microscopy differentiates discrete size distributions between membrane protein containing and empty nanolipoprotein particles

    AbstractTo better understand the incorporation of membrane proteins into discoidal nanolipoprotein particles (NLPs) we have used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to image and analyze NLPs assembled in the presence of bacteriorhodopsin (bR), lipoprotein E4 n-terminal 22k fragment scaffold and DMPC lipid. The self-assembly process produced two distinct NLP populations: those containing inserted bR (bR-NLPs) and those that did not (empty-NLPs). The bR-NLPs were distinguishable from empty-NLPs by an average increase in height of 1.0 nm as measured by AFM. Streptavidin binding to biotinylated bR confirmed that the original 1.0 nm height increase corresponds to br-NLP incorporation. AFM and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) measurements suggest that NLP size did not vary around a single mean but instead there were several subpopulations, which were separated by discrete diameters. Interestingly, when bR was present during assembly the diameter distribution was shifted to larger particles and the larger particles had a greater likelihood of containing bR than smaller particles, suggesting that membrane proteins alter the mechanism of NLP assembly

    On Quadratic Divergences in Supergravity, Vacuum Energy and the Supersymmetric Flavor Problem

    We examine the phenomenological consequences of quadratically divergent contributions to the scalar potential in supergravity effective Lagrangians. We focus specifically on the effect of these corrections on the vacuum configuration of scalar fields in softly-broken supersymmetric theories and the role these corrections play in generating non-diagonal soft scalar masses. Both effects can only be properly studied when the divergences are regulated in a manifestly supersymmetric manner -- something which has thus far been neglected in past treatments. We show how a supersymmetric regularization can impact past conclusions about both types of phenomena and discuss what types of high-energy theories are likely to be safe from unwanted flavor-changing neutral current interactions in the context of supergravity theories derived from heterotic string compactifications

    The heating of dust by old stellar populations in the Bulge of M31

    We use new Herschel multi-band imaging of the Andromeda galaxy to analyze how dust heating occurs in the central regions of galaxy spheroids that are essentially devoid of young stars. We construct a dust temperature map of M31 through fitting modified blackbody SEDs to the Herschel data, and find that the temperature within 2 kpc rises strongly from the mean value in the disk of 17 pm 1K to \sim35K at the centre. UV to near-IR imaging of the central few kpc shows directly the absence of young stellar populations, delineates the radial profile of the stellar density, and demonstrates that even the near-UV dust extinction is optically thin in M31's bulge. This allows the direct calculation of the stellar radiation heating in the bulge, U\ast(r), as a function of radius. The increasing temperature profile in the centre matches that expected from the stellar heating, i.e. that the dust heating and cooling rates track each other over nearly two orders of magnitude in U\ast. The modelled dust heating is in excess of the observed dust temperatures, suggesting that it is more than sufficient to explain the observed IR emission. Together with the wavelength dependent absorption cross section of the dust, this demonstrates directly that it is the optical, not UV, radiation that sets the heating rate. This analysis shows that neither young stellar populations nor stellar near-UV radiation are necessary to heat dust to warm temperatures in galaxy spheroids. Rather, it is the high densities of Gyr-old stellar populations that provide a sufficiently strong diffuse radiation field to heat the dust. To the extent which these results pertain to the tenuous dust found in the centres of early-type galaxies remains yet to be explored.Comment: 11 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Improves Outcome in Myelodysplastic Syndrome Across High-Risk Genetic Subgroups:Genetic Analysis of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network 1102 Study

    PURPOSE:Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) improves overall survival (OS). We evaluated the impact of MDS genetics on the benefit of HCT in a biological assignment (donor v no donor) study.METHODS:We performed targeted sequencing in 309 patients age 50-75 years with International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) intermediate-2 or high-risk MDS, enrolled in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network 1102 study and assessed the association of gene mutations with OS. Patients with TP53 mutations were classified as TP53multihit if two alleles were altered (via point mutation, deletion, or copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity).RESULTS:The distribution of gene mutations was similar in the donor and no donor arms, with TP53 (28% v 29%; P =.89), ASXL1 (23% v 29%; P =.37), and SRSF2 (16% v 16%; P =.99) being most common. OS in patients with a TP53 mutation was worse compared with patients without TP53 mutation (21% ± 5% [SE] v 52% ± 4% at 3 years; P &lt;.001). Among those with a TP53 mutation, OS was similar between TP53single versus TP53multihit (22% ± 8% v 20% ± 6% at 3 years; P =.31). Considering HCT as a time-dependent covariate, patients with a TP53 mutation who underwent HCT had improved OS compared with non-HCT treatment (OS at 3 years: 23% ± 7% v 11% ± 7%; P =.04), associated with a hazard ratio of 3.89; 95% CI, 1.87 to 8.12; P &lt;.001 after adjustment for covariates. OS among patients with molecular IPSS (IPSS-M) very high risk without a TP53 mutation was significantly improved if they had a donor (68% ± 10% v 0% ± 12% at 3 years; P =.001).CONCLUSION:HCT improved OS compared with non-HCT treatment in patients with TP53 mutations irrespective of TP53 allelic status. Patients with IPSS-M very high risk without a TP53 mutation had favorable outcomes when a donor was available.</p

    Irrigation management in poplar (Populus spp.) plantations: A review

As one of the fastest-growing tree species in temperate zones, the high growth rate of poplar is associated with its high waterdemand, which makes it vulnerable to water deficits. To maintain and improve the productivity and quality of poplar plantations, by alleviating the impact of soil water deficit on tree growth and health, irrigation has been long applied as an essential cultivation practice for poplar plantations around the world. However, both fundamentals for irrigation and technology innovations are limited by the lack of critical knowledge on the irrigation management practices in poplar plantations. In this work, data and information collected from questionnaires, literature, and a survey around the world, were used to investigate the current situation of irrigation management in poplar plantations. We present a summary of the currently applied irrigation regimes for poplars. Then, with the help of the literature and a global dataset of poplar growth compiled with data from 27 sites in five countries, we thoroughly analyzed and reviewed the main effects of irrigation on poplar plantations. Finally, the profitability of irrigation in poplar plantations is discussed. We conclude with some existing problems and future research directions for irrigation management of poplars.
