Development of an undergraduate multidisciplinary engineering project
During their time at university it is necessary for undergraduate engineering students to develop not just technical skills related to their chosen engineering subject, but to also develop team working, time management, self organisation and decision making skills that will enable them to work effectively as engineers in the real world after graduation. These important transferable skills are highly sought after by industry and any chance to identify where such skills have been successfully used during an undergraduate degree course is a valuable addition to a student’s CV when subsequently entering the job market. To address the need of developing transferable skills, the School of Engineering and Design Multidisciplinary Project (MDP) was introduced in 2007 to provide first year undergraduate students with an opportunity to work together in multidisciplinary teams on a design and construction project. Each team is comprised of students from across the range of subject areas within the School and tasked with designing and building a robotic vehicle to tackle an obstacle course. The basis for the kits provided to each team are Lego Mindstorms robots for a majority of groups while the remaining groups are provided with a Parallax Basic STAMP 2 chip and a micro-controller chip to design their vehicle around. Figure 1 shows a selection of the 50 completed project builds from the 2009 MDP, showing the wide array of designs produced by the students. This paper describes the main aims of the MDP and gives an overview of how it has developed over the last three years to become a key part of the engineering undergraduate programme at Brunel University
Chlorpromazine for schizophrenia: a Cochrane systematic review of 50 years of randomised controlled trials
BACKGROUND:
Chlorpromazine (CPZ) remains one of the most common drugs used for people with schizophrenia worldwide, and a benchmark against which other treatments can be evaluated. Quantitative reviews are rare; this one evaluates the effects of chlorpromazine in the treatment of schizophrenia in comparison with placebo.
METHODS:
We sought all relevant randomised controlled trials (RCT) comparing chlorpromazine to placebo by electronic and reference searching, and by contacting trial authors and the pharmaceutical industry. Data were extracted from selected trials and, where possible, synthesised and random effects relative risk (RR), the number needed to treat (NNT) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) calculated.
RESULTS:
Fifty RCTs from 1955–2000 were included with 5276 people randomised to CPZ or placebo. They constitute 2008 person-years spent in trials. Meta-analysis of these trials showed that chlorpromazine promotes a global improvement (n = 1121, 13 RCTs, RR 0.76 CI 0.7 to 0.9, NNT 7 CI 5 to 10), although a considerable placebo response is also seen. People allocated to chlorpromazine tended not to leave trials early in both the short (n = 945, 16 RCTs, RR 0.74 CI 0.5 to 1.1) and medium term (n = 1861, 25 RCTs, RR 0.79 CI 0.6 to 1.1). There were, however, many adverse effects. Chlorpromazine is sedating (n = 1242, 18 RCTs, RR 2.3 CI 1.7 to 3.1, NNH 6 CI 5 to 8), increases a person's chances of experiencing acute movement disorders, Parkinsonism and causes low blood pressure with dizziness and dry mouth.
CONCLUSION:
It is understandable why the World Health Organization (WHO) have endorsed and included chlorpromazine in their list of essential drugs for use in schizophrenia. Low- and middle-income countries may have more complete evidence upon which to base their practice compared with richer nations using recent innovations
PSS14 VALIDATION OF THE EYELASH SATISFACTION FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONNAIRE FOR FOLLOW-UP SELF-ASSESSMENT OF EYELASH SATISFACTION
Recent hypotheses on the action of antidepressants imply a modulation of excitatory amino acid transmission. Here, the effects of long-term antidepressant application in rats with the drug tianeptine were examined at hippocampal CA3 commissural associational (c/a) glutamate receptor ion channels, employing the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. The drug's impact was tested by subjecting rats to daily restraint stress for three weeks in combination with tianeptine treatment (10 mg/kg/day). Whereas stress increased the deactivation time-constant and amplitude of the N -methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs), it did not affect the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA)/kainate receptor-mediated EPSCs. Concomitant pharmacological treatment of stressed animals with tianeptine resulted in a normalized scaling of the amplitude ratio of NMDA receptor to AMPA/kainate receptor-mediated currents and prevented the stress-induced attenuation of NMDA-EPSCs deactivation. Both paired-pulse-facilitation and frequency-dependent plasticity remained unchanged. Both in control and stressed animals, however, tianeptine treatment strengthened the slope of the input-output relation of EPSCs. The latter was mimicked by exposing hippocampal slices in vitro with 10 mum tianeptine, which rapidly increased the amplitudes of NMDA- and AMPA/kainate EPSCs. The enhancement of EPSCs could be blocked by the intracellular presence of the kinase inhibitor staurosporine (1 mum), suggesting the involvement of a postsynaptic phosphorylation cascade rather then presynaptic release mechanisms at CA3 c/a synapses. These results indicate that tianeptine targets the phosphorylation-state of glutamate receptors at the CA3 c/a synapse. This novel signal transduction mechanism for tianeptine may provide a mechanistic resolution for its neuroprotective properties and, moreover, a pharmacological trajectory for its memory enhancing and/or antidepressant activity
Improved annotation of 3' untranslated regions and complex loci by combination of strand-specific direct RNA sequencing, RNA-seq and ESTs
The reference annotations made for a genome sequence provide the framework
for all subsequent analyses of the genome. Correct annotation is particularly
important when interpreting the results of RNA-seq experiments where short
sequence reads are mapped against the genome and assigned to genes according to
the annotation. Inconsistencies in annotations between the reference and the
experimental system can lead to incorrect interpretation of the effect on RNA
expression of an experimental treatment or mutation in the system under study.
Until recently, the genome-wide annotation of 3-prime untranslated regions
received less attention than coding regions and the delineation of intron/exon
boundaries. In this paper, data produced for samples in Human, Chicken and A.
thaliana by the novel single-molecule, strand-specific, Direct RNA Sequencing
technology from Helicos Biosciences which locates 3-prime polyadenylation sites
to within +/- 2 nt, were combined with archival EST and RNA-Seq data. Nine
examples are illustrated where this combination of data allowed: (1) gene and
3-prime UTR re-annotation (including extension of one 3-prime UTR by 5.9 kb);
(2) disentangling of gene expression in complex regions; (3) clearer
interpretation of small RNA expression and (4) identification of novel genes.
While the specific examples displayed here may become obsolete as genome
sequences and their annotations are refined, the principles laid out in this
paper will be of general use both to those annotating genomes and those seeking
to interpret existing publically available annotations in the context of their

A survey of current and anticipated use of standard and specialist equipment by UK optometrists
Purpose: To investigate current and anticipated use of equipment and information technology (IT) in community optometric practice in the UK, and to elicit optometrists' views on adoption of specialist equipment and IT.
Methods: An anonymous online questionnaire was developed, covering use of standard and specialist diagnostic equipment, and IT. The survey was distributed to a random sample of 1300 UK College of Optometrists members.
Results: Four hundred and thirty-two responses were received (response rate = 35%). Enhanced (locally commissioned) or additional/separately contracted services were provided by 73% of respondents. Services included glaucoma repeat measures (30% of respondents), glaucoma referral refinement (22%), fast-track referral for wet age-related macular degeneration (48%), and direct cataract referral (40%). Most respondents (88%) reported using non-contact/pneumo tonometry for intra-ocular pressure measurement, with 81% using Goldmann or Perkins tonometry. The most widely used item of specialist equipment was the fundus camera (74% of respondents). Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) was used by 15% of respondents, up from 2% in 2007. Notably, 43% of those anticipating purchasing specialist equipment in the next 12 months planned to buy an OCT. ‘Paperless’ records were used by 39% of respondents, and almost 80% of practices used an electronic patient record/practice management system. Variations in responses between parts of the UK reflect differences in the provision of the General Ophthalmic Services contract or community enhanced services. There was general agreement that specialised equipment enhances clinical care, permits increased involvement in enhanced services, promotes the practice and can be used as a defence in clinico-legal cases, but initial costs and ongoing maintenance can be a financial burden. Respondents generally agreed that IT facilitates administrative flow and secure exchange of health information, and promotes a state-of-the-art practice image. However, use of IT may not save examination time; its dynamic nature necessitates frequent updates and technical support; the need for adequate training is an issue; and security of data is also a concern.
Conclusion: UK optometrists increasingly employ modern equipment and IT services to enhance patient care and for practice management. While the clinical benefits of specialist equipment and IT are appreciated, questions remain as to whether the investment is cost-effective, and how specialist equipment and IT may be used to best advantage in community optometric practice
Spontaneous and deliberate future thinking: A dual process account

Available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-019-01262-7.In this article, we address an apparent paradox in the literature on mental time travel and mind-wandering: How is it possible that future thinking is both constructive, yet often experienced as occurring spontaneously? We identify and describe two ‘routes’ whereby episodic future thoughts are brought to consciousness, with each of the ‘routes’ being associated with separable cognitive processes and functions. Voluntary future thinking relies on controlled, deliberate and slow cognitive processing. The other, termed involuntary or spontaneous future thinking, relies on automatic processes that allows ‘fully-fledged’ episodic future thoughts to freely come to mind, often triggered by internal or external cues. To unravel the paradox, we propose that the majority of spontaneous future thoughts are ‘pre-made’ (i.e., each spontaneous future thought is a re-iteration of a previously constructed future event), and therefore based on simple, well-understood, memory processes. We also propose that the pre-made hypothesis explains why spontaneous future thoughts occur rapidly, are similar to involuntary memories, and predominantly about upcoming tasks and goals. We also raise the possibility that spontaneous future thinking is the default mode of imagining the future. This dual process approach complements and extends standard theoretical approaches that emphasise constructive simulation, and outlines novel opportunities for researchers examining voluntary and spontaneous forms of future thinking.Peer reviewe
Spirometry reference equations for central European populations from school age to old age.
Spirometry reference values are important for the interpretation of spirometry results. Reference values should be updated regularly, derived from a population as similar to the population for which they are to be used and span across all ages. Such spirometry reference equations are currently lacking for central European populations. To develop spirometry reference equations for central European populations between 8 and 90 years of age. We used data collected between January 1993 and December 2010 from a central European population. The data was modelled using "Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape" (GAMLSS). The spirometry reference equations were derived from 118'891 individuals consisting of 60'624 (51%) females and 58'267 (49%) males. Altogether, there were 18'211 (15.3%) children under the age of 18 years. We developed spirometry reference equations for a central European population between 8 and 90 years of age that can be implemented in a wide range of clinical settings
The Evolutionary Status of Clusters of Galaxies at z ~ 1
Combined HST, X-ray, and ground-based optical studies show that clusters of
galaxies are largely "in place" by , an epoch when the Universe was
less than half its present age. High resolution images show that elliptical,
S0, and spiral galaxies are present in clusters at redshifts up to . Analysis of the CMDs suggest that the cluster ellipticals formed their
stars several Gyr earlier, near redshift 3. The morphology--density relation is
well established at , with star-forming spirals and irregulars residing
mostly in the outer parts of the clusters and E/S0s concentrated in dense
clumps. The intracluster medium has already reached the metallicity of
present-day clusters. The distributions of the hot gas and early-type galaxies
are similar in clusters, indicating both have largely virialized in
the deepest potentials wells. In spite of the many similarities between
and present-day clusters, there are significant differences. The
morphologies revealed by the hot gas, and particularly the early-type galaxies,
are elongated rather than spherical. We appear to be observing the clusters at
an epoch when the sub-clusters and groups are still assembling into a single
regular cluster. Support for this picture comes from CL0152 where the gas
appears to be lagging behind the luminous and dark mass in two merging
sub-components. Moreover, the luminosity difference between the first and
second brightest cluster galaxies at is smaller than in 93% of
present-day Abell clusters, which suggests that considerable luminosity
evolution through merging has occurred since that epoch. Evolution is also seen

Echinoderms have bilateral tendencies
Echinoderms take many forms of symmetry. Pentameral symmetry is the major
form and the other forms are derived from it. However, the ancestors of
echinoderms, which originated from Cambrian period, were believed to be
bilaterians. Echinoderm larvae are bilateral during their early development.
During embryonic development of starfish and sea urchins, the position and the
developmental sequence of each arm are fixed, implying an auxological
anterior/posterior axis. Starfish also possess the Hox gene cluster, which
controls symmetrical development. Overall, echinoderms are thought to have a
bilateral developmental mechanism and process. In this article, we focused on
adult starfish behaviors to corroborate its bilateral tendency. We weighed
their central disk and each arm to measure the position of the center of
gravity. We then studied their turning-over behavior, crawling behavior and
fleeing behavior statistically to obtain the center of frequency of each
behavior. By joining the center of gravity and each center of frequency, we
obtained three behavioral symmetric planes. These behavioral bilateral
tendencies might be related to the A/P axis during the embryonic development of
the starfish. It is very likely that the adult starfish is, to some extent,
bilaterian because it displays some bilateral propensity and has a definite
behavioral symmetric plane. The remainder of bilateral symmetry may have
benefited echinoderms during their evolution from the Cambrian period to the
present
