    Effective learning and teaching of reading

    This was the largest study in Britain to date of the strategies used to teach reading in adult literacy classes (some classes were integrated with ICT and financial literacy for example), and the first attempt to correlate that evidence with measures of change in learners' reading attainment and attitudes to literacy. We observed and recorded (in writing) over 472 hours of teaching and learning. Our sample of learners is broadly representative of the national distribution, and the data gathered on 454 learners in 59 classes represents a wealth of information: about teaching and learning, effective and promising practices, and also areas where it is a priority for teachers and teacher trainers to engage in further training and development

    Release and Establishment of Megamelus scutellaris (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) on Waterhyacinth in Florida

    More than 73,000 Megamelus scutellaris (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) were released in Florida over a 2 to 3 yr period at 10 sites in an attempt to establish sustainable populations on waterhyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes Mart. Solms (Commelinales: Pontederiaceae). Insect populations persisted at most sites including those furthest north and consecutive overwintering was confirmed in as many as three times at some sites. Establishment appeared to be promoted at sites with some cover or shading compared to open areas.     Work-related stress:The impact of COVID-19 on critical care and redeployed nurses: A mixed-methods study

Methods and analysis: This is a mixed methods study (QUANT – QUAL), underpinned by a theoretical model of occupational stress, the Job-Demand Resources Model (JD-R). Participants are critical care and redeployed nurses from Scottish and three large English units. Phase one is a cross-sectional survey in part replicating a pre-COVID-19 study and results will be compared with this data. Linear and logistic regression analysis will examine the relationship between antecedent, demographic, and professional variables on health impairment (burnout syndrome, mental health, posttraumatic stress symptoms), motivation (work engagement, commitment), and organisational outcomes (intention to remain in critical care nursing and quality of care). We will also assess the usefulness of a range of resources provided by the NHS and professional organisations. To allow in-depth exploration of individual experiences, phase two will be one-to-one semi-structured interviews with 25 CCNs and 10 redeployed nurses. The JD-R model will provide the initial coding framework to which the interview data will be mapped. The remaining content will be analysed inductively to identify and chart content that is not captured by the model. In this way the adequacy of the JD-R model is examined robustly and its expression in this context will be detailed. Ethics and dissemination: Ethics approval was granted from the University of Aberdeen CERB2020101993.     Associations of maternal arsenic exposure with adult fasting glucose and insulin resistance in the Strong Heart Study and Strong Heart Family Study

    Experimental and prospective epidemiologic evidence suggest that arsenic exposure has diabetogenic effects. However, little is known about how family exposure to arsenic may affect risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D)-related outcomes in adulthood. We evaluated the association of both maternal and offspring arsenic exposure with fasting glucose and incident T2D in 466 participants of the Strong Heart Family Study. Total arsenic (ΣAs) exposure was calculated as the sum of inorganic arsenic (iAs) and methylated (MMA, DMA) arsenic species in maternal and offspring baseline urine. Median maternal ΣAs at baseline (1989-91) was 7.6 µg/g creatinine, while median offspring ΣAs at baseline (2001-03) was 4.5 µg/g creatinine. Median offspring glucose in 2006-2009 was 94 mg/dL, and 79 participants developed T2D. The fully adjusted mean difference (95% CI) for offspring glucose was 4.40 (-3.46, 12.26) mg/dL per IQR increase in maternal ΣAs vs. 2.72 (-4.91 to 10.34) mg/dL per IQR increase in offspring ΣAs. The fully adjusted odds ratio (95%CI) of incident T2D was 1.35 (1.07, 1.69) for an IQR increase in maternal ΣAs and 1.15 (0.92, 1.43) for offspring ΣAs. The association of maternal ΣAs with T2D outcomes were attenuated with adjustment for offspring adiposity markers. Familial exposure to arsenic, as measured in mothers 15-20 years before offspring follow-up, is associated with increased odds of offspring T2D. Support from colleagues and supervisors was a core job resource. Sustained demands and impaired physical and psychological well‐being had negative organizational consequences with CCN expressing increased intention to leave their role. Conclusions: The combination of high demands and reduced resources had negative impacts on the psychological well‐being of nurses which is translating into increased consideration of leaving their profession. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: The full impacts of the pandemic on the mental health of CCN are unlikely to resolve without appropriate interventions. Impact: Managers of healthcare systems should use these findings to inform: (i) the structure and organization of critical care workplaces so that they support staff to be well, and (ii) supportive interventions for staff who are carrying significant psychological distress as a result of working during and after the pandemic. These changes are required to improve staff recruitment and retention. Reporting Method: We used the COREQ guidelines for reporting qualitative studies.
