    Development of an Additively Manufactured Capacitive Humidity Sensor for the International Space Station

    The ability to measure humidity on the International Space Station and other long-duration spaceflight missions is a crucial part of the onboard systems. For example, the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) needs to know the amount of humidity in the air to make decisions about whether it should spend power to run the dehumidifier systems to attempt to reclaim that water. Other issues can arise if the humidity reaches too high of levels and condensation builds up on electrical components. With that in mind, it is vital that the spacecraft keeps spare sensors on board or has the ability to manufacture new sensors on demand. An additively manufactured sensor would be additionally beneficial because it would save space onboard that would normally be taken up by spares, save money from costly resupply missions, and allow the sensor to be constantly updated with the most effective design.     Constraint Release mechanisms for H-Polymers moving in Linear Matrices of varying molar masses

    We investigate the influence of the environment on the relaxation dynamics of well-defined H-polymers diluted in a matrix of linear chains. The molar mass of the linear chain matrix is systematically varied and the relaxation dynamics of the H-polymer is probed by means of linear viscoelastic measurements, with the aim to understand its altered motion in different blends, compared to its pure melt state. Our results indicate that short unentangled linear chains accelerate the relaxation of both the branches and the backbone of the H-polymers by acting as an effective solvent. On the other hand, the relaxation of the H-polymer in an entangled matrix is slowed-down, with the degree of retardation depending on the entanglement number of the linear chains. We show that this retardation can be quantified by considering that the H-polymers are moving in a dilated tube at the rhythm of the motion of the linear matrix

    The major detoxification product in maize roots after 24 h benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (BOA) exposure was identified as glucoside carbamate resulting from rearrangement of BOA-N-glucoside, but the pathway of N-glucosylation, enzymes involved and the site of synthesis were previously unknown. Assaying whole cell proteins revealed the necessity of H2O2 and Fe2+ ions for glucoside carbamate production. Peroxidase produced BOA radicals are apparently formed within the extraplastic space of the young maize root. Radicals seem to be the preferred substrate for N-glucosylation, either by direct reaction with glucose or, more likely, the N-glucoside is released by glucanase/glucosidase catalyzed hydrolysis from cell wall components harboring fixed BOA.     We derive the linear force-extension relation for a wormlike chain of arbitrary stiffness including entropy elasticity, bending and thermodynamic buckling. From this we infer the plateau modulus G0G^0 of an isotropic entangled solution of wormlike chains. The entanglement length LeL_e is expressed in terms of the characteristic network parameters for three different scaling regimes in the entangled phase.     Multivisceral intestinal transplantation: Surgical pathology

    We report the diagnostic surgical pathology of two children who underwent multivisceral abdominal transplantation and survived for 1 month and 6 months. There is little relevant literature, and diagnostic criteria for the various clinical possibilities are not established; this is made more complicated by the simultaneous occurrence of more than one process. We based our interpretations on conventional histology, augmented with immunohistology, including HLA staining that distinguished graft from host cells in situ. In some instances functional analysis of T cells propagated from the same biopsies was available and was used to corroborate morphological interpretations. A wide spectrum of changes was encountered. Graft-versus-host disease, a prime concern before surgery, was not seen. Rejection was severe in 1 patient, not present in the other, and both had evidence of lymphoproliferative disease, which was related to Epstein-Barr virus. Bacterial translocation through the gut wall was also a feature in both children.
