Responding to the Epidemic of Student Stress and Anxiety
Many of our children are growing up in a reality of trauma, 2020 stressors, competitiveness, hyper-connectedness and over-exposure. As a result, there are a record-high number of students experiencing stress and anxiety. In this session, the presenters will explore current statistics, research, student voice and actionable ideas for how a school can best respond to the emotional needs of its students
The Third Wave of Educational Reform: Fostering the Development of the Whole Child
The third wave of educational reform goes beyond narrowly focusing on student achievement (first wave) to also recognizing the need for social-emotional learning (second wave), and now including wraparound services for health, safety, and family/community engagement to equitably meet the holistic needs of all students, especially those in poverty. Contributing to the third wave, the “5H” Holistic Framework (5HHF) provides five protective/promotive factors to meet students’ needs and promote their holistic well-being: Head (academic achievement), Heart (social-emotional care), Hand (safety/security), Health (physical/mental health), and Home (family/community engagement). We will introduce educators to current vocabulary, processes for gathering student voice, a readiness inventory, an assessment rubric, a whole school improvement template, and funding opportunities needed to turn the 5HHF into action
How to Build Schools and Communities of Hope Through Student Voice, Community Partnerships, and Wraparound Services
What happens when early warning systems point to barriers outside of the school’s control, such as transience, family changes, poverty, trauma, immigration, and addiction as well as mental, emotional, social, and physical health? It is often known that external factors get in the way of student learning but also often that we are not sure what to do about them. This session will teach participants how schools and districts are leveraging community partnerships, as well as state and federal resources, to holistically meet the family, social-emotional, and academic needs of their students
The Transformative Power of Student Voice
Join Leigh Colburn and Linda Beggs to learn multiple processes for gathering the voice and experiences of your students in a manner that will transform the mindset, processes, practices, programming, and measurable outcomes of your school. Most importantly, these whole child processes will help you create a culture of hope for students and your staff
The Transformative Power of Student Voice and Wraparound Services
What happens when early warning systems point to barriers outside of the school’s control? How do teachers, principals, and school districts address issues of transiency, family changes, poverty, trauma, immigration, addiction, mental, emotional, social, and physical health? Teachers, principals, and more importantly, students, know external factors get in the way of student learning, but don\u27t know what to do about them. In this training, you will receive an overview of how schools and districts are gathering student voice to inform wraparound services for the purpose of holistically meeting the family, social & emotional, and academic needs of their students
Implementing the Third Wave of Educational Reform with the “5H” Holistic Framework of Best Practices
Consistent with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the “third wave” of educational reform goes beyond narrowly focusing on student achievement (first wave) to also recognizing the need for social-emotional learning (second wave), and now including wraparound services for health, safety, and family/ community engagement to equitably meet the holistic needs of all students, especially those in poverty. Contributing to the third wave, the “5H” Holistic Framework (5HHF) provides five protective/promotive factors to meet students’ needs and promote their holistic well-being: Head (academic achievement), Heart (social-emotional care), Hand (safety/security), Health (physical/mental health), and Home (family/community engagement). We will introduce educators (i.e., administrators, teachers, counselors, school psychologists, parent liaisons, and social workers) to current vocabulary, an updated readiness inventory, a field-tested assessment rubric, a school/parent/community collaboration guide, a whole school improvement template, and funding opportunities needed to turn the 5HHF into action
