Observations of total RONO2 over the boreal forest: NO x sinks and HNO3 sources
In contrast with the textbook view of remote chemistry where HNO 3 formation is the primary sink of nitrogen oxides, recent theoretical analyses show that formation of RONO2 (ΣANs) from isoprene and other terpene precursors is the primary net chemical loss of nitrogen oxides over the remote continents where the concentration of nitrogen oxides is low. This then increases the prominence of questions concerning the chemical lifetime and ultimate fate of ΣANs. We present observations of nitrogen oxides and organic molecules collected over the Canadian boreal forest during the summer which show that ΣANs account for ∼20% of total oxidized nitrogen and that their instantaneous production rate is larger than that of HNO3. This confirms the primary role of reactions producing ΣANs as a control over the lifetime of NOx (NOx =NO+NO2) in remote, continental environments. However, HNO 3 is generally present in larger concentrations than ΣANs indicating that the atmospheric lifetime of ΣANs is shorter than the HNO3 lifetime. We in-vestigate a range of proposed loss mechanisms that would explain the inferred lifetime of ΣANs finding that in combination with deposition, two processes are consistent with the observations: (1) rapid ozonolysis of isoprene nitrates where at least ∼40% of the ozonolysis producs t ts release NOx from the carbon backbone and/or (2) hydrolysis of particulate organic nitrates with HNO3 as a product. Implications of these ideas for our understanding of NOx and NOy budget in remote and rural locations are discussed. © Author(s) 2013
Acute caffeine intake increases performance in the 15-s Wingate test during the menstrual cycle.
Aims: In male athletes, caffeine is considered an ergogenic aid to increase anaerobic
performance during the Wingate anaerobic test (WANT). However, information
about the effect of caffeine on WANT performance in female athletes is
contradictory. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the ergogenicity of caffeine is present during all the phases of the menstrual cycle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of caffeine intake on WANT performance during 3 phases of the
menstrual cycle.
Methods: Thirteen well-trained eumenorrhoeic triathletes participated in a
double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over experimental trial. On 2 different days in
each phase, and in randomized order, participants ingested caffeine (3 mg kg−1
) or a
placebo (cellulose). The menstrual cycle phases were individually characterized as
follows: (i) early follicular; (ii) preovulatory; and (iii) midluteal. In each trial, participants
performed a 15-s adapted version of the WANT.
Results: In comparison to the placebo, caffeine increased peak power during the
WANT in the early follicular (8.6 ± 0.8 vs 8.9 ± 0.9 W/kg, P = .04; effect size
[d] = 0.45), preovulatory (8.6 ± 0.9 vs 8.9 ± 0.9 W/kg, P = .04; d = 0.23) and mid-luteal
phases (8.6 ± 0.8 vs 8.9 ± 0.9 W/kg, P < .01; d = 0.52).
Conclusion: The ergogenic effect of caffeine on WANT peak cycling power was of a
similar magnitude in the follicular, preovulatory, and mid-luteal phases. These results
suggest that caffeine increases performance in the 15-s Wingate test in women
athletes and it might be considered an ergogenic aid to increase anaerobic
performance in eumenorrhoeic women during their menstrual cycle.post-print486 K
Environment-specific combinatorial cis-regulation in synthetic promoters
When a cell's environment changes, a large transcriptional response often takes place. The exquisite sensitivity and specificity of these responses are controlled in large part by the combinations of cis-regulatory elements that reside in gene promoters and adjacent control regions. Here, we present a study aimed at accurately modeling the relationship between combinations of cis-regulatory elements and the expression levels they drive in different environments. We constructed four libraries of synthetic promoters in yeast, consisting of combinations of transcription factor binding sites and assayed their expression in four different environments. Thermodynamic models relating promoter sequences to their corresponding four expression levels explained at least 56% of the variation in expression in each library through the different conditions. Analyses of these models suggested that a large fraction of regulated gene expression is explained by changes in the effective concentration of sequence-specific transcription factors, and we show that in most cases, the corresponding transcription factors are expressed in a pattern that is predicted by the thermodynamic models. Our analysis uncovered two binding sites that switch from activators to repressors in different environmental conditions. In both the cases, the switch was not the result of a single transcription factor changing regulatory modes, but most likely due to competition between multiple factors binding to the same site. Our analysis suggests that this mode of regulation allows for large and steep changes in expression in response to changing transcription factor concentrations. Our results demonstrate that many complex changes in gene expression are accurately explained by simple changes in the effective concentrations of transcription factors

Evaluation of Xpert® MTB/RIF and ustar easyNAT™ TB IAD for diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis of children in Tanzania : a prospective descriptive study
Fine needle aspiration biopsy has become a standard approach for diagnosis of peripheral tuberculous lymphadenitis. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF and Ustar EasyNAT TB IAD nucleic acid amplification assays, against acid-fast bacilli microscopy, cytology and mycobacterial culture for the diagnosis of TB lymphadenitis in children from a TB-endemic setting in Tanzania.; Children of 8 weeks to 16 years of age, suspected of having TB lymphadenitis, were recruited at a district hospital in Tanzania. Fine needle aspirates of lymph nodes were analysed using acid-fast bacilli microscopy, liquid TB culture, cytology, Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT. Latent class analysis and comparison against a composite reference standard comprising "culture and/or cytology" was done, to assess the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT for the diagnosis of TB lymphadenitis.; Seventy-nine children were recruited; 4 were excluded from analysis. Against a composite reference standard of culture and/or cytology, Xpert MTB/RIF and EasyNAT had a sensitivity and specificity of 58 % and 93 %; and 19 % and 100 % respectively. Relative to latent class definitions, cytology had a sensitivity of 100 % and specificity of 94.7 %.; Combining clinical assessment, cytology and Xpert MTB/RIF may allow for a rapid and accurate diagnosis of childhood TB lymphadenitis. Larger diagnostic evaluation studies are recommended to validate these findings and on Xpert MTB/RIF to assess its use as a solitary initial test for TB lymphadenitis in children
Culture shapes how we look at faces
Background: Face processing, amongst many basic visual skills, is thought to be invariant across all humans. From as early as 1965, studies of eye movements have consistently revealed a systematic triangular sequence of fixations over the eyes and the mouth, suggesting that faces elicit a universal, biologically-determined information extraction pattern. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we monitored the eye movements of Western Caucasian and East Asian observers while they learned, recognized, and categorized by race Western Caucasian and East Asian faces. Western Caucasian observers reproduced a scattered triangular pattern of fixations for faces of both races and across tasks. Contrary to intuition, East Asian observers focused more on the central region of the face. Conclusions/Significance: These results demonstrate that face processing can no longer be considered as arising from a universal series of perceptual events. Models of Star-Planet Magnetic Interaction
Magnetic interactions between a planet and its environment are known to lead
to phenomena such as aurorae and shocks in the solar system. The large number
of close-in exoplanets that were discovered triggered a renewed interest in
magnetic interactions in star-planet systems. Multiple other magnetic effects
were then unveiled, such as planet inflation or heating, planet migration,
planetary material escape, and even modification of the host star properties.
We review here the recent efforts in modelling and understanding magnetic
interactions between stars and planets in the context of compact systems. We
first provide simple estimates of the effects of magnetic interactions and then
detail analytical and numerical models for different representative scenarii.
We finally lay out a series of future developments that are needed today to

The moderating factors of neuroticism and extraversion in pain anticipation
This study investigates the moderator relationship between three psychological variables on pain threshold and tolerance: pain anticipation, neuroticism and extraversion. It is hypothesised that (a) a significant effect of anticipation on both pain threshold and tolerance will exist; wherein high-intensity pain anticipation will predispose lower pain threshold and tolerance, and (b) high neuroticism and low extraversion will moderate this relationship. The study was conducted using 76 participants who completed the cold pressor test under one of three conditions: control condition, intense-pain expectant condition or low-pain expectant. The results of the study showed no significant effect of anticipation and no significant moderator relationship for neuroticism or extraversion on pain threshold and tolerance, thus both hypotheses are not supported. Implications for future research are discussed providing new and unique findings, as no prior research into the moderator relationship between anticipation, personality traits and pain currently exists
A dusty pinwheel nebula around the massive star WR 104
Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are luminous massive blue stars thought to be immediate
precursors to the supernova terminating their brief lives. The existence of
dust shells around such stars has been enigmatic since their discovery some 30
years ago; the intense radiation field from the star should be inimical to dust
survival. Although dust-creation models, including those involving interacting
stellar winds from a companion star, have been put forward, high-resolution
observations are required to understand this phenomena. Here we present
resolved images of the dust outflow around Wolf-Rayet WR 104, obtained with
novel imaging techniques, revealing detail on scales corresponding to about 40
AU at the star. Our maps show that the dust forms a spatially confined stream
following precisely a linear (or Archimedian) spiral trajectory. Images taken
at two separate epochs show a clear rotation with a period of 220 +/- 30 days.
Taken together, these findings prove that a binary star is responsible for the
creation of the circumstellar dust, while the spiral plume makes WR 104 the
prototype of a new class of circumstellar nebulae unique to interacting wind
