A 68 year old woman was submitted to a mediastinal lymphangioleiomyoma resection found in a follow-up study of lower left lung resection due to bronchiectasis complicated by chylothorax. This led to a revaluation of the pulmonary specimen that revealed, in addition to inflammatory bronchiectasis, small spindle cell nodules in the lung parenchyma, similar to minute pulmonary meningothelial-like nodules, but with smooth muscle actin immunohistochemical positivity. The possibility of initial pulmonary development of lymphangioleiomyomatosis is discussed

Behavioral and biochemical effects of pharmacopuncture (ST 36 and ST 25) in obese rats

Background: Acupuncture has been reported as a weight loss treatment for obese patients. The use of pharmacopuncture focusing on behavioral analyses has not yet been studied with the objective of treating obesity. Thus, this study aimed to assess the biochemical and behavioral effects of using pharmacopuncture techniques in obese Wistar rats. Methods: The treatments consisted in applying pharmacopuncture at the Zusanli (ST 36) and Tianshu (ST 25) points. Results: When treated with pharmacopuncture, groups HDP36 and HDP25 experienced a reduction in body weight compared to the controls, who were also fed a hypercaloric diet. In the alimentary behavior test, latency to feed did not differ between the groups. However, groups HDP36 and HDP25 consumed a smaller number of cereals bits, which suggests that inappetence was an effect of the treatment. No difference was found among the groups in the elevated plus maze test, which indicates no anxiety action of the points studied. Regarding post mortem perirenal and abdominal fat among the groups fed a hypercaloric diet, groups HDP36 and HDP25 had lower perirenal fat weight and HDP36 had lower abdominal fat weight compared to the other groups. Likewise, a reduction in cholesterol 10.1186/s12906-015-0829-7 and glucose levels was found in groups HDP36 and HDP25 compared to the other groups that were fed a hypercaloric diet, while triglycerides decreased in subgroup HDP25 Conclusions: In conclusion, the present study showed the efficacy of pharmacopuncture in weight loss of obese rats, as well as changes in biochemical and behavioral parameters

LATE TRAUMATIC BIRTH COMPLICATION

Introdução: A necrose gorda do tecido subcutâneo (NGTS) é uma patologia transitória rara do tecido adiposo, que afeta sobretudo recém-nascidos de termo ou pós-termo com um período perinatal complicado. Caso clínico: Recém-nascido de termo, grande para a idade gestacional, nascido por parto vaginal complicado, com necessidade de reanimação. Aos 13 dias de vida surgiram lesões cutâneas compatíveis com NGTS, que resolveram sem complicações. Discussão: Relatamos um caso de NGTS que apresentou uma evolução benigna, para relembrarmos esta entidade incomum. A patogenia é mal compreendida e, embora geralmente resolva espontaneamente, pode complicar-se de hipercalcemia condicionando uma evolução desfavorável

Segmented scalp peninsula to prevent a raised hairline and misalignment in rhytidoplasty

INTRODUCTION: Rhytidoplasty has shown excellent results in the treatment of facial laxity over the years, but in a few cases in which the patient has increased facial laxity associated with high preauricular scalp implantation, we observed elevation of implantation above the root of the helix after flap traction, resulting in an unesthetic facial appearance and marring the surgical procedure. The objective of this study was to demonstrate a surgical technique designed to prevent hairline recession and maintain correct alignment for the facelift. METHODS: Of 25 patients who underwent rhytidoplasty, 12 received a segmented scalp peninsula. Descriptive analysis in this group included age, level of scalp implantation, surgical time, elevation of the hairline, necrosis, postoperative hematoma, unesthetic scars, and neuropraxia. RESULTS: We analyzed the results of a segmented scalp peninsula in 12 patients, ranging in age between 41 and 74 years, with a mean of 60 years. The return to usual activities ranged from 10 to 21 days. No unesthetic changes resulted from placement of the hairline on the sideburn in these 12 patients; there was one (4%) case of hematoma, but no case of necrosis or neuropraxia. CONCLUSION: The segmented scalp peninsula is an easily performed technique, with a low risk of complications and with satisfactory esthetic results

Hortaliças não-convencionais: sugestões de preparo e composição nutricional

As pesquisas em ciências agronômicas no INPA vêm sendo direcionadas à agricultura familiar como destinatária principal, por se tratar do maior contingente das unidades produtivas na Região Norte do Brasil (85%). Por outro lado, leva-se em conta, ainda, a imensa contribuição que a herança cultural (etnoconhecimentos) dos agricultores tradicionais da Amazônia, incluindo indígenas, oferece para a reconstrução de uma agricultura baseada no conhecimento agroecológico. Apesar de quase a totalidade das espécies, consideradas neste estudo, não serem originárias da região Amazônica, todas são originárias de regiões tropicais e, as que não são autóctones, foram introduzidas na Amazônia em diferentes períodos. Assim, esta cartilha tem como finalidade levar ao leitor informações básicas sobre hortaliças não convencionais acerca da composição nutricional desses alimentos e formas de preparo na alimentação humana
