Burning of solids in oxygen-rich environments in normal and reduced gravity
An experimental program was conducted to investigate the combustion characteristics of solids burning in a weightless environment. The combustion characteristics of thin cellulose acetate material were obtained from specimens burned in supercritical as well as in low pressure oxygen atmospheres. Flame spread rates were measured and found to depend on material thickness and pressure in both normal gravity (1-g) and reduced gravity (0-g). A gravity effect on the burning process was also observed; the ratio of 1-g to 0-g flame spread rate becomes larger with increasing material thickness. Qualitative results on the combustion characteristics of metal screens (stainless steel, Inconel, copper, and aluminum) burning in supercritical oxygen and normal gravity are also presented. Stainless steel (300 sq mesh) was successfully ignited in reduced gravity; no apparent difference in the flame spread pattern was observed between 1-g and 0-g
Forced-convection peak heat flux on cylindrical heaters in water and refrigerant 113
An investigation was conducted of the peak heat flux on cylindrical heaters in a fluid flowing perpendicular to the major axis of the heater. The test fluids were water and Refrigerant 113. Heaters of 0.049 to 0.181 cm diameter were tested over a fluid velocity range of 10.1 to 81.1 cm/sec. The experimental results were observed to fall within two regions based on the vapor removal geometry: jets or sheets. Mathematical models for each region successfully correlated the data for both fluids

Condensed Tannins in Tropical Legumes: Concentration, Astringency and Effects on the Nutrition of Ruminants
A feeding trial was carried out to determine the effect of extractable condensed tannins (ECT) concentration and tannin astringency in tropical legumes on nitrogen (N) digestion by sheep. Test legumes were Desmodium ovalifolium (Do) and Flemingia macrophylla (Fm) which had similar concentrations of Extractable CT (9% DM) but tannins with different degree of astringency (Do, 0.6 and Fm, 0.3 g protein bound/g of ECT). Chopped sun-dried forage of each legume was sprayed with either water (control) or polyethylene glycol (PEG, 3.5% DM) to reduce ECT and fed to 8 sheep with ruminal and duodenal canulas arranged in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin Square changeover design. Greater (P\u3c0.05) N flow to duodenum, and fecal N were observed with Fm than with Do. Estimates of escape N were similar (58 to 61%) for both legumes. Reduction of ECT with PEG in both legumes (9.0-9.4 to 4.7-5.4%) resulted in lower (P\u3c0.05) proportion of N reaching the duodenum. Results indicate that concentration of ECT had a greater effect on N digestion by sheep than tannin astringency
The CN Isotopic Ratios In Comets
Our aim is to determine the isotopic ratios (12)C/(13)C and (14)N/(15)N in a variety of comets and link these measurements to the formation and evolution of the solar system. The (12)C/(13)C and (14)N/(15)N isotopic ratios are measured for the CN radical by means of high-resolution optical spectra of the R branch of the B-X (0, 0) violet band. 23 comets from different dynamical classes have been observed, sometimes at various heliocentric and nucleocentric distances, in order to estimate possible variations of the isotopic ratios in parent molecules. The (12)C/(13)C and (14)N/(15)N isotopic ratios in CN are remarkably constant (average values of, respectively, 91.0 +/- 3.6 and 147.8 +/- 5.7) within our measurement errors, for all comets whatever their origin or heliocentric distance. While the carbon isotopic ratio does agree with the terrestrial value (89), the nitrogen ratio is a factor of two lower than the terrestrial value (272), indicating a fractionation in the early solar system, or in the protosolar nebula, common to all the comets of our sample. Trends and Associated Factors of Use of Opioid, Heroin, and Cannabis Among Patients for Emergency Department Visits in Nevada: 2009–2017
To examine trends and contributing factors of opioid, heroin, and cannabis-associated emergency department (ED) visits in Nevada. The 2009 to 2017 Nevada State ED database (n = 7,950,554 ED visits) were used. Use of opioid, heroin, and cannabis, respectively, was identified by the International Classification of Diseases, 9th & 10th Revisions. Three multivariable models, one for each of the 3 dependent variables, were conducted. Independent variables included year, insurance status, race/ethnicity, use of other substance, and mental health conditions. The number of individuals with opioid, heroin, cannabis-associated ED visits increased 3%, 10%, and 23% annually from 2009 to 2015, particularly among 21 to 29 age group, females, and African Americans. Use of other substance (odds ratio [OR] = 3.91; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.84, 3.99; reference - no use of other substance), mental health conditions (OR = 2.48; 95% CI = 2.43, 2.53; reference – without mental health conditions), Medicaid (OR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.38, 1.44; reference – non-Medicaid), Medicare (OR = 1.44; 95% CI = 1.39, 1.49; reference – non-Medicare) and uninsured patients (OR = 1.52; 95% CI = 1.49, 1.56; reference - insured) were predictors of all three substance-associated ED visits. With a steady increase in trends of opioid, heroin, and cannabis-associated ED visits in recent years, the main contributing factors include patient sociodemographic factors, mental health conditions, and use of other substances
Large excess of heavy nitrogen in both hydrogen cyanide and cyanogen from comet 17P/Holmes
From millimeter and optical observations of the Jupiter-family comet
17P/Holmes performed soon after its huge outburst of October 24, 2007, we
derive 14 N/15N = 139 +/- 26 in HCN, and 14N/15N = 165 +/- 40 in CN,
establishing that HCN has the same non-terrestrial isotopic composition as CN.
The same conclusion is obtained for the long-period comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)
after a reanalysis of previously published measurements. These results are
compatible with HCN being the prime parent of CN in cometary atmospheres. The
15N excess relative to the Earth atmospheric value indicates that N-bearing
volatiles in the solar nebula underwent important N isotopic fractionation at
some stage of Solar System formation. HCN molecules never isotopically
equilibrated with the main nitrogen reservoir in the solar nebula before being
incorporated in Oort-cloud and Kuiper-belt comets. The 12C/13C ratios in HCN

Mercury Concentrations in Streams of East Texas
Recent studies on potential mercury (Hg) contamination of fish from East Texas lakes and waterways have caused concern about mercury levels in East Texas waters. Historical records of Hg concentrations in 33 East Texas streams showed that median concentrations for each stream segment were no different than other U.S. streams. All the means and medians for stream segments having at least 20 recorded measurements were less than Texas (2.4 µg/L) water quality standards. Water samples collected in December 1995 and March 1996 from 6 different stream sites in Nacogdoches County had concentrations similar to historical records. Due to biological magnification, fish Hg levels can be 20,000 times greater than water Hg levels and levels are greater in large fish than in small fish. Although a recent study on sediment cores in 13 East Texas reservoirs and lakes suggested possible increases in mercury concentrations across the region, all Hg concentrations in water and sediment were far below Texas acute and chronic quality standards. No significant correlations were found between fish mercury concentrations and mercury concentrations in water or sediment. Potential agricultural inputs of Hg in East Texas are very low; the most likely source of Hg is atmospheric deposition from fossil fuel combustion and other industrial practices. The following may be considered to minimize potential health risks: 1) consume smaller fish from a variety of waterbodies, 2) increase consumption interval, 3) avoid eating skin and fatty tissues, and 4) limit consumption to quantities recommended by the Texas Health Department

Thermal regime of the Southeast Indian Ridge between 88°E and 140°E: Remarks on the subsidence of the ridge flanks
International audienceThe flanks of the Southeast Indian Ridge are characterized by anomalously low subsidence rates for the 0–25 Ma period: less than 300 m Ma−1/2 between 101°E and 120°E and less than 260 m Ma−1/2 within the Australian-Antarctic Discordance (AAD), between 120°E and 128°E. The expected along-axis variation in mantle temperature (∼50°C) is too small to explain this observation, even when the temperature dependence of the mantle physical properties is accounted for. We successively analyze the effect on subsidence of different factors, such as variations in crustal thickness; the dynamic contribution of an old, detached slab supposedly present within the mantle below the AAD; and depletion in ϕ m, a parameter here defined as the “ubiquitously distributed melt fraction” within the asthenosphere. These effects may all contribute to the observed, anomalously low subsidence rate of the ridge flanks, with the most significant contribution being probably related to the depletion in ϕ m. However, these effects have a deep-seated origin that cannot explain the abruptness of the transition across the fracture zones that delineate the boundaries of the AAD, near 120°E and near 128°E, respectively
