    Adverse food reactions in dogs due to antibiotic residues in pet food: a preliminary study

    In the last decades, adverse food reactions have increased considerably in dogs and cats. In this study we report on the possible onset of food intolerances symptoms, including otitis, diarrhoea, generalised anxiety, and dermatitis in a cohort of 8 dogs consuming commercial diets. All dogs received an organic chicken-based diet for 15 days. We performed analysis of blood biochemical parameters, kibble composition, and oxytetracycline (OTC) serum concentration before and after 15 days of organic chicken-based diet supplementation. We hypothesised that a chronic intake of contaminated food enhanced by the presence of nanoparticle aggregates might be at the base of the onset of pharmacologic or idiopathic food intolerances. At the end of the evaluation period, an overall significant reduction of otitis, diarrhoea, generalised anxiety, and dermatitis was observed. Biochemical analyses indicate a significant increase in the alkaline phosphatase, from 41 to 52.5 U/L, after 15 days (\u2022\u2022p <0.01), while a significant decrease in Gamma-glutamyl transferase and urea, from 9.37 to 6.25 U/L and from 32.13 \ub1 8.72 to 22.13 \ub1 7.8 mg/dL, respectively, was observed (\u2022p <0.05). A significant decrease, from 0.22 to 0.02 \u3bcg/mL, in mean OTC serum concentration was also observed (\u2022\u2022p <0.01). Composition analysis revealed the presence of OTC, calcium, aluminium, silicon, and phosphorous nanoparticle aggregates. Further research on a wider sample size would help to confirm the hypothesis proposed here

    Oral health services in prison settings: A global scoping review of availability, accessibility, and model of delivery

    : This review aimed at evaluating the state of availability, accessibility and model of delivery of oral health services in prisons, globally. Five databases of peer-reviewed literature and potential sources of grey literature were systematically searched. Inclusion criteria encompassed oral health papers related to prisons globally, with exclusion of certain article types. Selection involved independent evaluations by two researchers, followed by quality assessment. Data on the availability of oral health interventions in prisons came from 18 countries, while information on the model of delivery of the services is scarce. In addition, two sets of individual and organizational barriers toward oral health service uptake in prisons were revealed and discussed in the text. Lack of oral health services in prisons affects people living in prisons and jeopardizes their reintegration. Urgent and concrete international actions are required to ensure the availability, accessibility, and quality of oral health services among people living in prisons

    Response of the Cardiac Autonomic Control to Exposure to Nanoparticles and Noise: A Cross-Sectional Study of Airport Ground Staff

    Airport activity causes the emission of particulate matter and noise, two environmental contaminants and potential health hazards, particularly for the personnel operating nearby taxiways. We explored the association between exposure to fine/ultrafine particles (UFPs) and noise with heart rate variability (HRV), an early indicator of cardiovascular autonomic response, among a sample of airport ground staff. Between May and June 2018, thirty-four male operators (mean age = 43 years and SD = 6.7) underwent personal monitoring of exposure to nanoparticles and noise, and HRV during their work activity. We conducted univariate and multivariate analysis to test the effect of UFP and noise exposure HRV. Total Lung Deposition Surface Area (LDSA) was significantly associated with a decrease in HRV Total Power and Triangular index (beta = -0.038 p = 0.016 and beta = -7.8 x 10(-5), p = 0.042, respectively). Noise peak level showed an opposite effect, which was significant for Total Power (beta = 153.03, p = 0.027), and for Triangular index (beta = 0.362, p = 0.035). Further investigation is warranted to clarify the effect of the concurrent exposure to UFPs and noise on early changes of cardiac autonomic regulation

    Transversal study about acute acromioclavicular lesions

    The objective of the present transversal study is to check how Brazilian orthopedists treat these injuries, their criteria for choosing the treatment, results and complications. METHODS: During the 6th Brazilian Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (CBOC) and the 38th Brazilian Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (CBOT) 507 questionnaires were distributed (148 CBOC and 359 CBOT), with 478 being considered for analysis. RESULTS: Regarding type-I and -II ACIs, most of the respondents use traditional non-surgical methods. On the other hand, for type-IV, V and VI injuries, 475 (99.4%) of the respondents indicate surgical methods. Concerning type-III injuries, there is no consensus in the selection between traditional and surgical treatment for 386 (80.7%) respondents, with the most important factor for selecting a given treatment method being the patient's level of sports practice and age. CONCLUSION: There is no consensus regarding type-III ACIs, and the selection of the best treatment method is made according to patient's individual characteristics. However, current literature shows a trend towards non-operative methods.OBJETIVO: O objetivo do presente estudo transversal é verificar como o ortopedista brasileiro interpreta as lesões acromioclaviculares quanto aos critérios para a indicação do tratamento cirúrgico ou não, seus métodos preferidos, as complicações mais frequentes e os resultados obtidos. MÉTODOS: Durante o 6º Congresso Brasileiro de Cirurgia do Ombro e Cotovelo (CBOC) e o 38º Congresso Brasileiro de Ortopedia e Traumatologia (CBOT) foram distribuídos 507 questionários, sendo considerados 478 para análise. RESULTADOS: Em relação ao tratamento das LAC tipo I e II, a maioria dos entrevistados utilizam métodos não cirúrgicos. Em contraposição nas LAC IV, V e VI 475 (99,4%) dos entrevistados tratam essas lesões cirurgicamente. Nas LAC tipo III não existe uma definição na escolha do tratamento cirúrgico ou não cirúrgico para 386 (80,7%) entrevistados, sendo que o fator mais importante para tomada de decisão para a maioria dos entrevistados é a atividade esportiva do paciente e a idade.
