Energy loss of pions and electrons of 1 to 6 GeV/c in drift chambers operated with Xe,CO2(15%)
We present measurements of the energy loss of pions and electrons in drift
chambers operated with a Xe,CO2(15%) mixture. The measurements are carried out
for particle momenta from 1 to 6 GeV/c using prototype drift chambers for the
ALICE TRD. Microscopic calculations are performed using input parameters
calculated with GEANT3. These calculations reproduce well the measured average
and most probable values for pions, but a higher Fermi plateau is required in
order to reproduce our electron data. The widths of the measured distributions
are smaller for data compared to the calculations. The electron/pion
identification performance using the energy loss is also presented.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Nucl.Instrum.Meth.
Multimessenger astronomy with the Einstein Telescope
Gravitational waves (GWs) are expected to play a crucial role in the
development of multimessenger astrophysics. The combination of GW observations
with other astrophysical triggers, such as from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites,
optical/radio telescopes, and neutrino detectors allows us to decipher science
that would otherwise be inaccessible. In this paper, we provide a broad review
from the multimessenger perspective of the science reach offered by the third
generation interferometric GW detectors and by the Einstein Telescope (ET) in
particular. We focus on cosmic transients, and base our estimates on the
results obtained by ET's predecessors GEO, LIGO, and Virgo.Comment: 26 pages. 3 figures. Special issue of GRG on the Einstein Telescope.

Genotoxic effect induced by hydrogen peroxide in human hepatoma cells using comet assay
Background: Hydrogen peroxide is a common reactive oxygen intermediate generated by variousforms of oxidative stress. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the DNA damage capacity ofH2O2 in HepG2 cells. Methods: Cells were treated with H2O2 at concentrations of 25 μM or 50 μM for5 min, 30 min, 40 min, 1 h or 24 h in parallel. The extent of DNA damage was assessed by the cometassay. Results: Compared to the control, DNA damage by 25 μM and 50 μM H2O2 increasedsignificantly with increasing incubation time up to 1 h, but it was not increased at 24 h. Conclusions:Our Findings confirm that H2O2 is a typical DNA damage inducing agent and thus is a good modelsystem to study the effects of oxidative stress. DNA damage in HepG2 cells increased significantlywith H2O2 concentration and time of incubation but later decreased likely due to DNA repairmechanisms and antioxidant enzyme
Human Resource Flexibility as a Mediating Variable Between High Performance Work Systems and Performance
Much of the human resource management literature has demonstrated the impact of high performance
work systems (HPWS) on organizational performance. A new generation of studies is
emerging in this literature that recommends the inclusion of mediating variables between HPWS
and organizational performance. The increasing rate of dynamism in competitive environments
suggests that measures of employee adaptability should be included as a mechanism that may
explain the relevance of HPWS to firm competitiveness. On a sample of 226 Spanish firms, the
study’s results confirm that HPWS influences performance through its impact on the firm’s
human resource (HR) flexibility
Patellofemoral joint kinematics: The circular path of the patella around the trochlear axis
Differing descriptions of patellar motion relative to the femur have resulted from previous studies. We hypothesized that patellar kinematics would correlate to the trochlear geometry and that differing descriptions could be reconciled by accounting for differing alignments of measurement axes. Seven normal fresh-frozen knees were CT scanned, and their kinematics with quadriceps loading was measured by an optical tracker system. Kinematics was calculated in relation to the femoral epicondylar, anatomic, and mechanical axes. A novel trochlear axis was defined, between the centers of spheres best fitted to the medial and lateral trochlear articular surfaces. The path of the center of the patella was circular and uniplanar (root-mean-square error 0.3 mm) above 16 +/- 3 degrees (mean +/- SD) knee flexion. In the coronal plane, this circle was aligned 6 +/- 2 degrees from the femoral anatomical axis, close to the mechanical axis alignment. It was 91 +/- 3 degrees from the epicondylar axis, and 88 +/- 3 degrees from the trochlear axis. In the transverse plane it was 91 +/- 3 degrees and 88 +/- 3 degrees from the epicondylar and trochlear axes, respectively. Manipulation of the data to different axis alignments showed that differing previously published data could be reconciled. The circular path of patellar motion around the trochlea, aligned with the mechanical axis of the leg, is easily visualized and understood. (C) 2009 Orthopaedic Research Society. Pincer femoroacetabular impingement and retroversion : a 3D study
Pincer femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is cited as being the result of a socket that is either too deep or retroverted, or both. Using 3D-CT analysis, we set out to quantify the acetabular rim shape and orientation to determine the roles of these two factors in FAI. Twenty pincer acetabulae were selected from patients undergoing image based navigated surgery, where the lateral centre edge angle was greater than 40° on plain radiographs. The normal group of disease free sockets were obtained from a CT colonography database
Light regulates xylem cell differentiation via PIF in Arabidopsis.
The balance between cell proliferation and differentiation in the cambium defines the formation of plant vascular tissues. As cambium cells proliferate, subsets of daughter cells differentiate into xylem or phloem. TDIF-PXY/TDR signaling is central to this process. TDIF, encoded by CLE41 and CLE44, activates PXY/TDR receptors to maintain proliferative cambium. Light and water are necessary for photosynthesis; thus, vascular differentiation must occur upon light perception to facilitate the transport of water and minerals to the photosynthetic tissues. However, the molecular mechanism controlling vascular differentiation in response to light remains elusive. In this study we show that the accumulation of PIF transcription factors in the dark promotes TDIF signaling and inhibits vascular cell differentiation. On the contrary, PIF inactivation by light leads to a decay in TDIF activity, which induces vascular cell differentiation. Our study connects light to vascular differentiation and highlights the importance of this crosstalk to fine-tune water transport
