    Reduced breeding success in great black-backed gulls (Larus marinus) due to harness-mounted GPS device

    Animal-borne bio-logging devices are routinely fitted to seabirds to learn about their behaviour and physiology, as well as their interactions with the marine environment. The assessment and reporting of deleterious impacts from such devices on the individuals carrying them is critical to inform future work and improve data quality and animal welfare. We assessed the impacts of thoracic-harness attachments on the breeding performance and inter-annual return rates of Great Black-backed Gulls. We found that tagged individuals hatched fewer eggs per nest (0.67) than two different control groups (handled but not tagged – 2.0, and not handled – 1.9) and had lower hatching success rates per nest (27% compared with 81% and 82% in control groups). Inter-annual return rates were similar between tagged and control groups, but the harness attachment potentially caused the death of an individual 5 days after deployment. Overall, the harness attachment was a lead driver of nest failure. We urge extreme caution for those wanting to use harness-mounted devices on Great Black-backed Gulls

    The Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty Degree Survey II: Clustering of Bright Lyman Break Galaxies - Strong Luminosity Dependent Bias at z=4

    We present measurements of the clustering properties of bright (L>L∗L>L_{*}) z∼\sim4 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty Degree Survey (ODT). We describe techniques used to select and evaluate our candidates and calculate the angular correlation function which we find best fitted by a power law, ω(θ)=Awθ−β\omega(\theta)=A_{w}\theta^{-\beta} with Aw=15.4A_{w}=15.4 (with θ\theta in arcseconds), using a constrained slope of β=0.8\beta=0.8. Using a redshift distribution consistent with photometric models, we deproject this correlation function and find a comoving r0=11.4−1.9+1.7r_{0}=11.4_{-1.9}^{+1.7} h100−1_{100}^{-1} Mpc in a Ωm=0.3\Omega_m=0.3 flat Λ\Lambda cosmology for iAB≤24.5i_{AB}\leq24.5. This corresponds to a linear bias value of b=8.1−2.6+2.0b=8.1_{-2.6}^{+2.0} (assuming σ8=0.9\sigma_{8}=0.9). These data show a significantly larger r0r_{0} and bb than previous studies at z∼4z\sim4. We interpret this as evidence that the brightest LBGs have a larger bias than fainter ones, indicating a strong luminosity dependence for the measured bias of an LBG sample. Comparing this against recent results in the literature at fainter (sub-L∗L_{*}) limiting magnitudes, and with simple models describing the relationship between LBGs and dark matter haloes, we discuss the implications on the implied environments and nature of LBGs. It seems that the brightest LBGs (in contrast with the majority sub-L∗L_{*} population), have clustering properties, and host dark matter halo masses, that are consistent with them being progenitors of the most massive galaxies today.Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS. 15 Pages, 13 Figure

    Habitat selection and specialisation of herring gulls during the non-breeding season

    Understanding both the distribution and habitat use of populations through the annual cycle is vital to understanding how vulnerable species are to environmental change. However, distributions and habitat use can vary among individuals and populations, particularly in generalist species, with variation depending on external environmental factors, such as resource availability. Comprehensive information across multiple populations is important to guide spatial planning of protected areas and is increasingly available for breeding individuals, but it is still lacking for many species, particularly seabirds, during the non-breeding season, especially those with declining populations. We investigated within-species variation in migratory strategies, non-breeding habitat selection and habitat and spatial specialisation in a declining, opportunistic, generalist seabird, the European herring gull Larus argentatus, from multiple breeding colonies across northwest England and southwest Scotland using global positioning system (GPS) tracking during the non-breeding season of 2014/15. Although several individuals stayed within the area of the breeding colony, the majority of individuals migrated in a southerly direction and spent half of the annual cycle (on average 53%) away from the breeding area and kept moving through the non-breeding period. During non-breeding, herring gulls selected mainly marine intertidal, but also a range of anthropogenic terrestrial habitats. However, habitat selection differed between geographical regions, within a geographical region and among individuals. There was a generalist use of non-breeding habitats at the population level, but some habitat specialisation at the individual level that was repeatable through the non-breeding period despite individuals showing low spatial specialisation. The results highlight the importance of intertidal habitat and a mix of alternative foraging habitats in the wintering areas of herring gulls. The results also highlight that habitat selection in an opportunistic generalist can vary even between nearby regions and that appropriate conservation management plans may need to be tailored to regional differences in specific non-breeding areas

    1. Mist-netting is the most commonly used method for catching birds for scientific ringing but, despite decades of use, there have been few attempts to quantify the associated potential risks to the individuals caught. Any incidence of mortality through capture and handling, however low, is of potential ethical concern and may also introduce biases into the data. 2. We estimate the mortality rate associated with capture of previously ringed (recaptured) passerines from the British and Irish Ringing Scheme (c. 1.5 million records) caught using mist-nets. The importance of species, age, mass, month, time, previous captures and an index of predator occurrence were tested using generalised linear mixed-effects models. 3. The average mortality rate was 0.0011, most of which was reported to occur before the individuals had been extracted from the nets (c. 70% of incidents). Juveniles appeared to be at higher risk and the incidence of predation from mist-nets was seasonal, with increased risk during the winter. Species differed in their reported mortality rates with the apparent risk being greatest for Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita (0.0029) and Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula (0.0027). 4 To improve our understanding (and hence minimise risk in future) we recommend collecting more complete data on incidences of mortality, and also injuries; exercising increased care when the species we have identified as being at greater risk are likely to be captured, and ensuring there are robust procedures for the checking of nets (as most reported incidents of mortality occur before handling). We also recommend that all Ringing Schemes should collate and make available data on capture-related mortality.5. Overall rates of mortality associated with capture, though, were low and support the use of mist-netting as a safe capture technique, without undue bias from mortality, when used by appropriately trained individuals

    Evidence of different star formation histories for high- and low-luminosity radio galaxies

    The definitive version can be found at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com Copyright Royal Astronomical SocietyWe present the results of our investigation into the stellar populations of 24 radio galaxies at z≃ 0.5 drawn from four complete, low-frequency-selected radio surveys. We use the strength of the 4000-Å break as an indicator of recent star formation and compare this with radio luminosity, optical spectral classification and morphological classification. We find evidence of different star formation histories for high- and low-luminosity radio sources; our group of low radio luminosity sources (typically Fanaroff–Riley type I sources) has systematically older stellar populations than the higher radio luminosity group. Our sample is also fairly well divided by optical spectral classification. We find that galaxies classified as having low excitation spectra (LEGs) possess older stellar populations than high excitation line objects (HEGs), with the HEGs showing evidence for recent star formation. We also investigate the link between radio morphology, as used by Owen and Laing, and the stellar populations. We find that there is a preference for the ‘fat-double’ sources to have older stellar populations than the ‘classical double’ sources, although this is also linked to these sources lying predominantly in the LEG and HEG categories, respectively. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that HEGs are powered by accretion of cold gas, which could be supplied, for example, by recent mergers, secular instabilities or filamentary cold flows. These processes could also trigger star formation in the host galaxy. The host galaxies of the LEGs do not show evidence for recent star formation and an influx of cold gas and are consistent with being powered by the accretion of the hot phase of the interstellar medium.Peer reviewe

    GPS tracking reveals landfill closures induce higher foraging effort and habitat switching in gulls

    Abstract Background Landfills are a major subsidy for some animals, with implications for their life history and demography. Gulls feed extensively on food from landfills and closures are expected to have ecological consequences, but how this influences movement ecology is virtually unknown. Methods We used GPS-tracking to quantify foraging behaviour and habitat choice of lesser black-backed gulls (Larus fuscus) breeding at two colonies before and after closure of two nearby landfills. Results Following closure, gulls from both colonies travelled further and for longer to forage. Gulls also changed habitat selection, although this differed by colony - birds from one colony shifted to agricultural habitats, while at the other, increased their use of urban areas. These behavioural responses had no effect on adult body condition but hint at potential direct effects of higher foraging costs and indirect impacts by shifting to new habitats. Conclusions Our results demonstrate how landfill availability influences gull foraging movements and habitat selection. We also emphasize the value of biologging to detect rapid behavioural responses in contrast to more conventional demographic approaches, which is especially important for animals that spend the majority of their lives away from direct observation

    Metrics derived from GPS telemetry of individual Lesser Black-backed Gulls (Larus fuscus) throughout the year at three UK breeding colonies. Data are summarised per grid square across the spatial range of birds. Metrics in the file include the mean time spent and mean speed of travel per square for all movements, in flight activity, and for movements within the collision risk window (CRW) - see associated readme file. Mean distances travelled per square in the CRW are then calculated for each square and are used to estimate spatio-temporal sensitivity
