    Leafy Spurge - A Review

    Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a perennial herbaceous weed that infests millions of acres of range and pasture in the northern Great Plains. It outcompetes grasses and lowers land productivity because cattle will not graze infested areas even if spurge makes up only 10% of the vegetative biomass. This presentation will cover the history, taxonomy, and phenology of leafy spurge. A discussion of chemical, mechanical, and biocontrol techniques that aid in leafy spurge management will also be included

    Improvement Rates in Aerobic and Anaerobic Training

    The purpose of this research study was to determine the difference in improvement rates between anaerobic and aerobic training. Over two, four week periods VO2max test and Wingate test were administered on 11 untrained students from a Northwest College. The hypothesis was anaerobic training would facilitate greater improvement rates in both VO2max accessed through use of metabolic cart and anaerobic performance assessed through use of a Wingate test. Depending on what systems an individual wants to improve in performance they should specifically stress the desired system. Overall participants who trained aerobically had a 13.01% average improvement (p=0.275) in the VO2max test compared to 8.18% average improvement (p=0.579) in the Wingate test. Participants who trained anaerobically had a 3.77% average improvement in VO2max (p=0.744) and also a 6.39% improvement (p=0.667) anaerobic performance. In conclusion, the statistical hypothesis was rejected because anaerobic training did not produce the most beneficial results due to training. The anaerobic training only had improvement in the Wingate test while the aerobic training had the biggest effect on the VO2max test. Results from this study indicate that individuals can improve at a faster rate in both aerobic and anaerobic capacity with aerobic training

    Taking the fight to them: neighborhood human rights organizations and domestic protest

    This article examines how human rights international non-governmental organizations (hereafter HROs) can increase the level of political protest in neighboring states. Previous research suggests local activities of HROs help to generate mobilization for protests against governments. This article shows that the presence of HROs in neighboring states can be a substitute for domestic HROs; if domestic HROs are already flourishing, there will be less of a ‘neighbor’ effect. At sufficiently high levels of domestic HRO prevalence within a state, neighboring HROs help domestic HROs use institutionalized substitutes for protest mobilization strategies. Spatial econometric methods are used to test the implications of this theory. These results illuminate the role that non-governmental organizations play in these domestic political processes, and demonstrate the transnational nature of their activities

    An Alternative Approach to Nucleic Acid Memory

    DNA is a compelling alternative to non-volatile information storage technologies due to its information density, stability, and energy efficiency. Previous studies have used artificially synthesized DNA to store data and automated next-generation sequencing to read it back. Here, we report digital Nucleic Acid Memory (dNAM) for applications that require a limited amount of data to have high information density, redundancy, and copy number. In dNAM, data is encoded by selecting combinations of single-stranded DNA with (1) or without (0) docking-site domains. When self-assembled with scaffold DNA, staple strands form DNA origami breadboards. Information encoded into the breadboards is read by monitoring the binding of fluorescent imager probes using DNA-PAINT super-resolution microscopy. To enhance data retention, a multi-layer error correction scheme that combines fountain and bi-level parity codes is used. As a prototype, fifteen origami encoded with ‘Data is in our DNA!\n’ are analyzed. Each origami encodes unique data-droplet, index, orientation, and error-correction information. The error-correction algorithms fully recover the message when individual docking sites, or entire origami, are missing. Unlike other approaches to DNA-based data storage, reading dNAM does not require sequencing. As such, it offers an additional path to explore the advantages and disadvantages of DNA as an emerging memory material

    Analysis of 13 cell types reveals evidence for the expression of numerous novel primate- and tissue-specific microRNAs

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small ∌22-nt RNAs that are important regulators of posttranscriptional gene expression. Since their initial discovery, they have been shown to be involved in many cellular processes, and their misexpression is associated with disease etiology. Currently, nearly 2,800 human miRNAs are annotated in public repositories. A key question in miRNA research is how many miRNAs are harbored by the human genome. To answer this question, we examined 1,323 short RNA sequence samples and identified 3,707 novel miRNAs, many of which are human-specific and tissue-specific. Our findings suggest that the human genome expresses a greater number of miRNAs than has previously been appreciated and that many more miRNA molecules may play key roles in disease etiology

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    When theory and biology differ : the relationship between reward prediction errors and expectancy

    Comparisons between expectations and outcomes are critical for learning. Termed prediction errors, the violations of expectancy that occur when outcomes differ from expectations are used to modify value and shape behaviour. In the present study, we examined how a wide range of expectancy violations impacted neural signals associated with feedback processing. Participants performed a time estimation task in which they had to guess the duration of one second while their electroencephalogram was recorded. In a key manipulation, we varied task difficulty across the experiment to create a range of different feedback expectancies - reward feedback was either very expected, expected, 50/50, unexpected, or very unexpected. As predicted, the amplitude of the reward positivity, a component of the human event- related brain potential associated with feedback processing, scaled inversely with expectancy (e. g., unexpected feedback yielded a larger reward positivity than expected feedback). Interestingly, the scaling of the reward positivity to outcome expectancy was not linear as would be predicted by some theoretical models. Specifically, we found that the amplitude of the reward positivity was about equivalent for very expected and expected feedback, and for very unexpected and unexpected feedback. As such, our results demonstrate a sigmoidal relationship between reward expectancy and the amplitude of the reward positivity, with interesting implications for theories of reinforcement learning
