Regularity of solutions to higher-order integrals of the calculus of variations
We obtain new regularity conditions for problems of calculus of variations
with higher-order derivatives. As a corollary, we get non-occurrence of the
Lavrentiev phenomenon. Our main regularity result asserts that autonomous
integral functionals with a Lagrangian having coercive partial derivatives with
respect to the higher-order derivatives admit only minimizers with essentially
bounded derivatives
Climate Change and invasibility of the Antarctic benthos
Benthic communities living in shallow-shelf habitats in Antarctica (<100-m depth) are archaic in their structure and function. Modern predators, including fast-moving, durophagous (skeleton-crushing) bony fish, sharks, and crabs, are rare or absent; slow-moving invertebrates are the top predators; and epifaunal suspension feeders dominate many soft substratum communities. Cooling temperatures beginning in the late Eocene excluded durophagous predators, ultimately resulting in the endemic living fauna and its unique food-web structure. Although the Southern Ocean is oceanographically isolated, the barriers to biological invasion are primarily physiological rather than geographic. Cold temperatures impose limits to performance that exclude modern predators. Global warming is now removing those physiological barriers, and crabs are reinvading Antarctica. As sea temperatures continue to rise, the invasion of durophagous predators will modernize the shelf benthos and erode the indigenous character of marine life in Antarctica

Scintillator-based ion beam profiler for diagnosing laser-accelerated ion beams
Next generation intense, short-pulse laser facilities require new high repetition rate diagnostics for the detection of ionizing radiation. We have designed a new scintillator-based ion beam profiler capable of measuring the ion beam transverse profile for a number of discrete energy ranges. The optical response and emission characteristics of four common plastic scintillators has been investigated for a range of proton energies and fluxes. The scintillator light output (for 1 MeV > Ep < 28 MeV) was found to have a non-linear scaling with proton energy but a linear response to incident flux. Initial measurements with a prototype diagnostic have been successful, although further calibration work is required to characterize the total system response and limitations under the high flux, short pulse duration conditions of a typical high intensity laser-plasma interaction

Preparation and Measurement of Three-Qubit Entanglement in a Superconducting Circuit
Traditionally, quantum entanglement has played a central role in foundational
discussions of quantum mechanics. The measurement of correlations between
entangled particles can exhibit results at odds with classical behavior. These
discrepancies increase exponentially with the number of entangled particles.
When entanglement is extended from just two quantum bits (qubits) to three, the
incompatibilities between classical and quantum correlation properties can
change from a violation of inequalities involving statistical averages to sign
differences in deterministic observations. With the ample confirmation of
quantum mechanical predictions by experiments, entanglement has evolved from a
philosophical conundrum to a key resource for quantum-based technologies, like
quantum cryptography and computation. In particular, maximal entanglement of
more than two qubits is crucial to the implementation of quantum error
correction protocols. While entanglement of up to 3, 5, and 8 qubits has been
demonstrated among spins, photons, and ions, respectively, entanglement in
engineered solid-state systems has been limited to two qubits. Here, we
demonstrate three-qubit entanglement in a superconducting circuit, creating
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states with fidelity of 88%, measured with
quantum state tomography. Several entanglement witnesses show violation of
bi-separable bounds by 830\pm80%. Our entangling sequence realizes the first
step of basic quantum error correction, namely the encoding of a logical qubit
into a manifold of GHZ-like states using a repetition code. The integration of
encoding, decoding and error-correcting steps in a feedback loop will be the
next milestone for quantum computing with integrated circuits.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, and Supplementary Information (4 figures)
Antipsychotics and Torsadogenic Risk: Signals Emerging from the US FDA Adverse Event Reporting System Database
Background: Drug-induced torsades de pointes (TdP) and related clinical entities represent a current regulatory and clinical burden. Objective: As part of the FP7 ARITMO (Arrhythmogenic Potential of Drugs) project, we explored the publicly available US FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to detect signals of torsadogenicity for antipsychotics (APs). Methods: Four groups of events in decreasing order of drug-attributable risk were identified: (1) TdP, (2) QT-interval abnormalities, (3) ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia, and (4) sudden cardiac death. The reporting odds ratio (ROR) with 95 % confidence interval (CI) was calculated through a cumulative analysis from group 1 to 4. For groups 1+2, ROR was adjusted for age, gender, and concomitant drugs (e.g., antiarrhythmics) and stratified for AZCERT drugs, lists I and II (http://www.azcert.org, as of June 2011). A potential signal of torsadogenicity was defined if a drug met all the following criteria: (a) four or more cases in group 1+2; (b) significant ROR in group 1+2 that persists through the cumulative approach; (c) significant adjusted ROR for group 1+2 in the stratum without AZCERT drugs; (d) not included in AZCERT lists (as of June 2011). Results: Over the 7-year period, 37 APs were reported in 4,794 cases of arrhythmia: 140 (group 1), 883 (group 2), 1,651 (group 3), and 2,120 (group 4). Based on our criteria, the following potential signals of torsadogenicity were found: amisulpride (25 cases; adjusted ROR in the stratum without AZCERT drugs = 43.94, 95 % CI 22.82-84.60), cyamemazine (11; 15.48, 6.87-34.91), and olanzapine (189; 7.74, 6.45-9.30). Conclusions: This pharmacovigilance analysis on the FAERS found 3 potential signals of torsadogenicity for drugs previously unknown for this risk
Small group interventions for children aged 5-9 years old with mathematical learning difficulties
The research related to educational interventions for children with mathematical learning difficulties has been increasing steadily. In this chapter I focus on small group interventions for children aged 5–9 years old with learning difficulties in mathematics. First, I describe the important issues: (1) who are the children having problems in mathematics, (2) what do we mean with (special) education intervention, (3) what does Responsiveness to Intervention mean, and (4) what intervention features have been found effective for children aged 5–9 years with learning difficulties in mathematics. Then, I describe the research and developmental work that has been done in Finland on designing web services which provide evidence-based information and materials for educators. The two web services are LukiMat and ThinkMath. Together, these two web services include the knowledge base, assessment batteries and intervention tools to be used in relation to mathematical learning difficulties in the age group 5–9 years.Peer reviewe
The socioeconomic burden of SLE.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, relapsing-remitting, multisystemic autoimmune inflammatory disorder that predominantly affects women of childbearing age. Much has been written about the clinical course and long-term damage associated with SLE, as well as the reduced life expectancy of patients with this condition. In addition, studies have emphasized the socioeconomic and psychosocial impact of SLE, although the monetary cost of caring for patients with the disorder has only been evaluated in a modest number of studies and a restricted number of countries. SLE has a negative impact on quality of life and is associated with high health-care costs and significant productivity loss. Factors associated with increased cost of SLE include long disease duration, high disease activity and damage, poor physical and mental health, and high education and employment levels. Similarly, high disease activity and damage, poor physical health, certain disease manifestations, as well as poor family and social support are associated with poor health-related quality of life outcomes. SLE incurs a great burden on both the patient and society. Long-term prospective studies should be encouraged to monitor the costs and psychosocial impact of this condition, and to better understand the factors that are associated with poor outcomes.postprin
Reevaluation of the Value of Autoparasitoids in Biological Control
Autoparasitoids with the capacity of consuming primary parasitoids that share the same hosts to produce males are analogous to intraguild predators. The use of autoparasitoids in biological control programs is a controversial matter because there is little evidence to support the view that autoparasitoids do not disrupt and at times may promote suppression of insect pests in combination with primary parasitoids. We found that Encarsia sophia, a facultative autoparasitoid, preferred to use heterospecific hosts as secondary hosts for producing males. The autoparasitoids mated with males originated from heterospecifics may parasitize more hosts than those mated with males from conspecifics. Provided with an adequate number of males, the autoparasitoids killed more hosts than En. formosa, a commonly used parasitoid for biological control of whiteflies. This study supports the view that autoparasitoids in combination with primary parasitoids do not disrupt pest management and may enhance such programs. The demonstrated preference of an autoparasitoid for heterospecifics and improved performance of males from heterospecifics observed in this study suggests these criteria should be considered in strategies that endeavor to mass-produce and utilize autoparasitoids in the future
