    Ampoule sealing apparatus and process

    An apparatus and process for sealing fused quartz ampoules housing a semiconductor growth charge under vacuum is described. An elongated fused quartz ampoule having an enlarged diameter open end and a reduced diameter closed end is vertically retained in a vacuum assembly. A semiconductor charge is disposed within the reduced diameter portion of the ampoule. A quartz plug of substantially the same diameter as the reduced diameter portion is suspended within the open and of the ampoule via a rotary vacuum feed. After evacuation of the ampoule a plug is lowered into the reduced diameter area and sealed therein while maintaining the vacuum on the ampoule. The charged ampoule area is then separated from the remaining structure by breaking along the scored line

    Infrared properties of dust grains derived from IRAS observations

    The analysis of several diffuse interstellar clouds observed by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) is presented. The 60/100 micron flux ratios appear to be nearly constant in clouds with up to 1 sup m visual extinction at the center. Observations of a highly regular cloud in Chamaeleon show that the 12/100 micron ratio peaks at an intermediate radial distance and declines towards the center of the cloud. These observations indicate that nonequilibrium emission accounts only for the 12 and 25 micron bands; strong emission observed at the 60 micron band is probably due to equilibrium thermal radiation. The correlation of the 12 micron emission with a red excess observed for a high latitude cloud, L1780, is shown to be consistent with the assumption that both features are due to fluorescence by the same molecular species

    Oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, thrombophilias and risk of venous thromboembolism: a systematic review The Thrombosis: Risk and Economic Assessment of Thrombophilia Screening (TREATS) Study

    Combined oral contraceptives,oral hormone replacement therapy and thrombophilias are recognised risk factors for venous thromboembolism in women.The objective of this study was to assess the risk of thromboembolism among women with thrombophilia who are taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, conducting a systematic review and metaanalysis. Of 201 studies identified, only nine met the inclusion criteria. Seven studies included pre-menopausal women on oral contraceptives and two studies included peri-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy. For oral contraceptive use, significant associations of the risk of venous thromboembolism were found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 15.62; 95%CI 8.66 to 28.15); deficiencies of antithrombin (OR 12.60; 95%CI 1.37 to 115.79), protein C (OR 6.33; 95%CI 1.68 to 23.87), or protein S (OR 4.88; 95%CI 1.39 to 17.10), elevated levels of factor VIIIc (OR 8.80; 95%CI 4.13 to 18.75); and factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A (OR 7.85; 95%CI 1.65 to 37.41). For hormone replacement therapy, a significant association was found in women with factor V Leiden (OR 13.16; 95%CI 4.28 to 40.47).Although limited by the small number of studies, the findings of this study support the presence of interaction between thrombophilia and venous thromboembolism among women taking oral contraceptives. However, further studies are required to establish with greater confidence the associations of these, and other, thrombophilias with venous thromboembolism among hormone users

    Final-state interactions in the response of a many-body system to an external probe delivering large momentum are normally described using the eikonal approximation, for the trajectory of the struck particle, and the frozen approximation, for the positions of the spectators. We propose a generalization of this scheme, in which the initial momentum of the struck particle is explicitly taken into account. Numerical calculations of the nuclear matter response at 1 <q<< |{\bf q}| < 2 GeV/c show that the inclusion of this momentum dependence leads to a sizable effect in the low energy tail. Possible implications for the analysis of existing electron-nucleus scattering data are discussed.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure

    Gauge Coupling Instability and Dynamical Mass Generation in N=1 Supersymmetric QED(3)

    Using superfield Dyson-Schwinger equations, we compute the infrared dynamics of the semi-amputated full vertex, corresponding to the effective running gauge coupling, in N-flavour {\mathcal N}=1 supersymmetric QED(3). It is shown that the presence of a supersymmetry-preserving mass for the matter multiplet stabilizes the infrared gauge coupling against oscillations present in the massless case, and we therefore infer that the massive vacuum is thus selected at the level of the (quantum) effective action. We further demonstrate that such a mass can indeed be generated dynamically in a self-consistent way by appealing to the superfield Dyson-Schwinger gap equation for the full matter propagator.Comment: 14 pages ReVTeX; four axodraw figures incorporate

    On dynamical mass generation in three dimensional supersymmetric U(1) gauge field theory

    We investigate and contrast the non-perturbative infra red structure of N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric non-compact U(1) gauge field theory in three space-time dimensions with N matter flavours. We study the Dyson-Schwinger equations in a general gauge using superfield formalism; this ensures that supersymmetry is kept manifest, though leads to spurious infra red divergences which we have to avoid carefully. In the N=1 case the superfield formalism allows us to choose a vertex which satisfies the U(1) Ward identity exactly, and we find the expected critical behaviour in the wavefunction renormalization and strong evidence for the existence of a gauge independent dynamically generated mass, but with no evidence for a critical flavour number. We study the N=2 model by dimensional reduction from four dimensional N=1 electrodynamics, and we refine the old gauge dependence argument that there is no dynamical mass generation.     The MEA-2 A facility was used to test the effect of the low gravity environment on suppressing convective mixing in the growth of Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te crystals. The need to eliminate convection, the furnace characteristics and operation that will be required for successful experimental implementation, and to the level that is presently known, the measured physical properties of the Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te system were discussed. In addition, a brief background of the present and potential utilization of Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te is given. Additional experiments are anticipated in future MEA-A, improved MEA and other dedicated materials processing in space flight apparatus
