The impact of bioactive textiles on human skin microbiota

    Get PDF
In order to support the elevated market demand for the development of textiles with specific benefits for a healthy and safe lifestyle, several bioactive textiles with defined properties, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-odor, and anti-repellent, anti-ultraviolet (UV) radiation, have been proposed. Antimicrobial textiles, particularly, have received special interest considering the search for smart, protective textiles that also impact health and well-being. Although the incorporation of antimicrobials into textile material has been well succeeded, the addition of such components in textile clothing can influence the balance of the skin microbiota of the wearer. While most antimicrobial textiles have demonstrated good biocompatibility and antimicrobial performance against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, some problems such as textile biodegradation, odor, and dissemination of unwanted microorganisms might arise. However, little is known about the impact of such antimicrobial textile-products on human skin microbiota. To address this issue, the present review, for the first time, gives an overview about the main effects of antimicrobial textiles, i.e., antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral, on skin microbiota while driving future investigation to elucidate their putative clinical relevance and possible applications according to their impact on skin microbiota. This knowledge may open doors for the development of more microbiota friendly textiles or antimicrobial textile-products able to target specific populations of the skin microbiota aiming to alleviate skin disorders, malodor, and allergies by avoiding the growth and spread of pathogenic microorganisms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Quanto às causas identificadas para a rutura, a traição foi a mais referida, quer por mulheres, quer por homens; ABSTRAT: Romantic dissolution in Adolescents and College Students The main objective of this research is to study the breaking up in relationships between teens and young adults, analysing their gender differences in how this is remembered as well as the influence of self-esteem in the stress the breaking up is reminded. To achieve this, a quantitatively approach was made, using one sample per convenience of 483 subjects, including students in high school and university. It was given to the respondents a protocol that consists on the following instruments: Social-Demographic Questionnaire and on Romantic Relationships, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and The Breakup Distress Scale. The results obtained suggests the stress that is remembered is superior to women and for participants which assess have been the other member of the couple that caused the breakup. It wasn’t found a relationship between the level of self-esteem and the post-breaking up stress. Being currently in a relationship or not, didn’t revealed to have any impact on stress’ memory. Betrayal is the most referred cause identified for the romantic breakup, either by women or men

This study aims to evaluate the relation between nutritional knowledge (NK), anthropometry, body image perception (BIP) and body image satisfaction (BIS), in Portuguese adolescents. A transversal, analytical and quantitative study was designed in an education institution located in the North of Portugal. 212 adolescents, aged between 10 and 18 years old were assessed. Each participant’s anthropometry was assessed, in order to determine their percentiles. BIP and BIS were determined using Gardner et al. (1999) body image scales. The NK was evaluated using a questionnaire. To treat the data it was used the SPSS 19.0. From a total of 212 participants, 123 were female and 89 male. It was observed a statistically significant correlation among the following variables: NK and education level; NK and BIP; BIS and BIP; BIS and BMI; BIS and gender; BIP and BMI; BIP and education levels, and between BIP and gender. The results of this study showed an association between BIP, BIS and NK. Girls presented higher BIP and BIS. It was also possible to observe that the higher education level, higher was the BIP and the BIS.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background Body Image reflects a person path, whose perceptions are part of its unit and are determinant for its existence, at each moment. Na individuals perception about his body is affected by others comments, that most of the times leads to insatisfaction with owns body image. At the present moment, studies that correlate real measured anthropometric data, body image perception and satisfac- tion are not known. Objective To evaluate the relation between real anthropometric data and body image perception and satisfaction, in Portuguese adolescents. Methods A descriptive transversal and quantitative study was designed in na education institution located in the North of Portugal. There were evaluated 214 adolescents, with ages between 10 and 19 years. Each participants anthropometric data (weight and height) were assessed, aiming to determine BMI for age centile, according to Centres of Disease and Control Prevention. Body Image perception and satisfaction was determined using Gardner et al., 1999 body image scales, with ±30 % distortion. Results The 214 adolescents (124 female and 90 male) that partici- pated in this study, were classified according to BMI for age centiles, and 1.4 % were underweight and 22.9 % overweight or obese. It was possible to verify, using Kruskal-Walis non Parametric Test, that there is a statistically significant association between body image satisfaction and academic level, revealing that adolescents body image increases as academic level increases. The results show that there is no significant association between the remain variables: BMI, gender and body image perception). Conclusions Although several studies, in other countries and/or age groups, show that females have lower body image satisfaction levels than males, this study failed to show coincident results. It was proved that as academic level increases, adolescents body image increases as well. It is evident that intervention projects to promote better body images perception and satisfaction are fundamental, especially in adolescents from younger age groups

Efficacy of suit therapy on functioning in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis presents an overview of the efficacy of suit therapy on functioning in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). Method: A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted. A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed articles was performed on electronic databases, from their inception to May 2014. Studies included were rated for methodological quality using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Effects of suit therapy on functioning were assessed using meta-analytic techniques. Results: From the 46 identified studies, four met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Small, pooled effect sizes were found for gross motor function at post-treatment (g=0.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.10-0.82) and follow-up (g=0.47, 95% CI 0.03-0.90). Interpretation: The small number of studies, the variability between them, and the low sample sizes are limitations of this review. Findings suggest that to weigh and balance benefits against harms, clinicians, patients, and families need better evidence to examine and prove the effects of short intensive treatment such as suit therapy on gross motor function in children and adolescents with CP. Therefore, more research based on high-quality studies focusing on functioning in all dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health perspective is necessary to clarify the impact of suit therapy

POAT-01-6177-FEDER-000047FCT_UIDB/05608/2020. FCT_UIDP/05608/2020.introducing distance learning within higher education institutions (HEIs) is a key societal issue, especially in the health sector, due to its in vivo learning nature. Public policies play an important role in these digital environments. This study aims to identify the determinants influencing national public policies that foster digital learning transformation in Health HEIs in Portugal. A prospective survey, using the structural analysis of Godet’s method, is conducted, and data are gathered from different health sector stakeholders. Despite the efforts to increase digital literacy and funding for digital learning in HEIs, a weak strategy and implementation of a national plan for distance learning in Health HEIs are still prevalent. The driver to success is grounded on national and international cooperation between health professionals, hospitals, and HEIs through transferability processes of innovative practices.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
