FLIP the (Flow) table: Fast lightweight policy-preserving SDN updates
We propose FLIP, a new algorithm for SDN network updates that preserve forwarding policies. FLIP builds upon the dualism between replacements and additions of switch flow-table rules. It identifies constraints on rule replacements and additions that independently prevent policy violations from occurring during the update. Moreover, it keeps track of alternative constraints, avoiding the same policy violation. Then, it progressively explores the solution space by swapping constraints with their alternatives, until it reaches a satisfiable set of constraints. Extensive simulations show that FLIP outperforms previous proposals. It achieves a much higher success rate than algorithms based on rule replacements only, and massively reduces the memory overhead with respect to techniques solely relying on rule additions
Relationship between fruit weight and the fruit-to-leaf area ratio, at the spur and whole-tree level, for three sweet cherry varieties
Fruit weight is the main quality parameter of sweet cherries and leaf area/fruit is the most important characteristic influencing fruit weight. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between Mean Fruit Weight (MFW) and the Fruit Number to Leaf Area Ratio (FNLAR) for `Bing¿, `Van¿ and `Lapins¿, grown under tatura-trellis and vase training systems, at both the spur and whole-tree level. The research was performed through regression analysis with FNLAR as the independent variable and MFW as the dependent variable. There were no significant interactions between training system and cultivar for the effect of FNLAR on MFW at either the spur or whole-tree level. Also, there were no significant differences between training systems. The R2 for the relationships per cultivar were higher at the whole-tree level than at the spur level. At both levels, `Lapins¿ had the highest fruit weight potential and `Van¿ the lowest. At the spur level, the slopes of the regression were similar for the different cultivars, but at the whole-tree level, `Van¿ was less sensitive. The better fit at the whole-tree level suggests that fruits of a spur are supplied not only by the leaves on that spur, but also from other less fruit-loaded spurs, from non-fruiting shoots and from reserve
Safe, Efficient, and Robust SDN Updates by Combining Rule Replacements and Additions
IEEE Disruption-free updates are a key primitive to effectively operate SDN networks and maximize the benefits of their programmability. In this paper, we study how to implement this primitive safely (with respect to forwarding correctness and policies), efficiently (in terms of consumed network resources) and robustly to unpredictable factors, such as delayed message delivery and processing. First, we analyze the fundamental limitations of prior proposals, which either: 1) progressively replace initial flow rules with new ones or 2) instruct switches to maintain both initial and final rules. Second, we show that safe, efficient, and robust updates can be achieved by leveraging a more general approach. We indeed unveil a dualism between rule replacements and additions that opens new degrees of freedom for supporting SDN updates. Third, we demonstrate how to build upon this dualism. We propose FLIP, an algorithm that computes operational sequences combining the efficiency of rule replacements with the applicability of rule additions. FLIP identifies constraints on rule replacements and additions that independently prevent safety violations from occurring during the update. Then, it explores the solution space by swapping constraints that prevent the same safety violations, until it reaches a satisfiable set of constraints. Fourth, we perform extensive simulations, showing that FLIP can significantly outperform prior work. In the average case, it guarantees a much higher success rate than algorithms only based on rule replacements, and massively reduces the memory overhead needed by techniques solely using rule additions

Effect of fruit-to-leaf area ratio on fruit quality and vegetative growth of 'bing' sweet cherry trees at optimal leaf area index
Fruit yield and quality determine grower income from commercial sweet cherry orchards. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Fruit Number to Leaf Area Ratio (FNLAR, fruit m-2 LA) on Mean Fruit Weight (MFW), firmness (F), soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA) and SSC:TA ratio of `Bing¿ sweet cherries trees of near-optimal leaf area index (LAI). The effect of FNLAR on Mean Shoot Growth (MSG) and trunk cross-sectional area increment (TCSAI) also was analysed to determine possible competition between reproductive and vegetative growth. Regression analysis was used with FNLAR as the independent variable. Fruit dry weight and quality of 'bing' sweet cherries grown without source limitations
Understanding the seasonal pattern of potential fruit growth is important for identification and timing of possible management operations, and quantification of this pattern is an important prerequisite to serve as input for crop growth models. `Bing¿ sweet cherry trees were heavily thinned at 63 degree-days (DD) (=8 days) after full bloom so weight and quality of the remaining fruit could be monitored under conditions of limiting and non-limiting carbohydrate supply. The effect of fruit thinning on mean shoot growth and trunk cross-sectional area also was analysed to detect possible translocation from reproductive to vegetative growth. Mean Fruit Dry Weight (MFDW) of tagged fruit was estimated weekly, based on fruit diameter, to identify the moment of the onset of competition between fruit within trees. At harvest, Fruit Number to Leaf Area Ratio (FNLAR, fruits m-2 LA) was 52% lower in heavily-thinned trees than in non-thinned trees. Yield per tree was higher (
GH and the cardiovascular system: an update on a topic at heart
In this review, the importance of growth hormone (GH) for the maintenance of normal cardiac function in adult life is discussed. Physiological effects of GH and underlying mechanisms for interactions between GH and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and the cardiovascular system are covered as well as the cardiac dysfunction caused both by GH excess (acromegaly) and by GH deficiency in adult hypopituitary patients. In both acromegaly and adult GH deficiency, there is also increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality possibly linked to aberrations in GH status. Finally, the status of the GH/IGF-I system in relation to heart failure and the potential of GH as a therapeutic tool in the treatment of heart failure are reviewed in this article. © 2014 The Author(s)
Presence of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase gene (NDM-1) in a clinical isolate of Acinetobacter junii in Argentina
Here we report the presence of a clinically significant A. junii blaNDM-1 positive in a 38-year-old woman who was admitted to the emergency department with a fever and leg ulcers with signs of infection. The NDM-1 carbapenemase has been dramatically spread among Gram-negative bacilli, thus imposing a new challenge on the health system to fight bacterial infections.These data expand the number of Acinetobacter species harbouring blaNDM-1. The wide existence of Acinetobacter harbouring and dispersing this carbapenemase emphasizes the importance of non-previously recognized pathogens as reservoirs of dangerous resistance determinants.
