    A cerebral bridge from olfactory cognition to spatial navigation

    An evolutionary paradox is the variability of the olfactory bulb size, in contrast to the other brain regions, which are sized proportionally to the peripheral function. This variability seems to be the result of selection for the olfactory function. This disagreement may derive from considering smell as a sense linked to odorous discrimination. In many vertebrates and in terrestrial and marine mammals, the sense of smell has evolved into functions related to the eco-localization. So, if the olfactory function involves spatial perception and navigation, this, couldexplain the proportional discrepancy between the olfactory bulb and olfactory cortex. Humans are able to discriminate a spatial position as a function of olfactory cues. Vice versa, in neurodegenerative syndromes the orientation capacity and olfactory perception are impaired. This leads us to think that could be a common cross-modal processing, of phylogenetic origin, which links olfactory perception and spatial orientation. Starting from these theoretical assumptions, we conducted a basic research, on 100 healthy subjects, investigating, through both behavioral and electroencephalographic data, the connection between spatial memory span and olfactory spatial memory span. Subjects were assessed through a three-condition task: normal Corsi Block Test (CBT), ‘Olfactory’ Block Test (OBT) and a ‘Semantic-Olfactory’ Block Test (SOBT). CBT consisted in a test on spatial memory span; OBT consisted in a presentation a spatial sequences of 9 different odorants (i.e., Eucalyptol, Carvone, Eugenol, Isoamyl Acetate, Geraniol, Phenethyl Alcohol, Acetophenone, Cinnamon, Hexanal) instilled on paper square not recognizable by any sign, positioned on a CBT, and showed in a spatial navigation way, and SOBT consisted of a semantic labelled of olfactory spatial navigation. A GLM repeated measure highlighted significant differences during the three conditions. Subjects had different SPANs due to different conditions. The Semantic olfactory memory SPAN was inferior respect Olfactory span and Spatial Span. Furthermore was found a significant positive correlation between the three condition. The 5 subjects with higher SPAN scores, 5 with medium scores and the 5 subjects with lower SPAN scores were recruited to investigate ERP components elicited during the cross-modal task. Subjects had to perform, during a high-density EEG recording, an olfactory task (administered through the device US2017127971 (A1) “? 2017-05-11), an EEG Posner spatial cueing task and a go/no-go olfactory semantic categorization task. The results of this study will be discussed in light of a theoretical connection between these three aspects of cortical functions that seem strongly interconnected

    Assessing escapes from short rotation plantations of the invasive tree species Robinia pseudoacacia L. in Mediterranean ecosystems: a study in central Italy

    Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a fast growing tree species native to temperate North America, and widely diffused and naturalized in Europe. It is one of the candidate species for establishing bioenergy plantations on mar- ginal lands in temperate and sub-Mediterranean regions. This potential is in contrast to its well-known invasive habit, leading to a potential damage to plant biodiversity in many European countries. Advise against black locust plantation in regions where it is already invasive has been issued by several international reports, as well as the adoption of mitigation measures (e.g., “containment” buffer zones) to prevent the spread of the species into natural and semi-natural habitats. In the Mediterranean basin, however, no studies have been carried out aimed at quantifying the escape rate of black locust saplings from plantation stands and its recruitment into natural habitats, together with the effectiveness of a buffer zone in reducing the spread. In this study we investigated the spread of black locust along 35 transects surround- ing three 20-year- old plantations and including three different land cover types: abandoned arable land, semi-natural woodland and a buffer zone (orchards) with a low degree of farming input. In addition, the effect of soil disturbance on seed propagation was investigated. Our results demonstrate that the density of black locust regeneration is strongly affected by the land cover, abandoned agricultural land being the most prone to black locust colo- nization. Contrastingly, the spread was minimal in the buffer zone and negligi- ble in semi-natural woodland. During the investigated year, seed generative propagation was also negligible. The semi-natural woodland seems to resist well to black locust invasion, though further observations are needed to assess the consequences of stand harvesting disturbance as well, according to local standard forest management. Buffer zones seem to be very effective in con- trolling black locust invasion. Best management practices, with active farming inputs, are also discussed

    Among the well agreed-on benefits of a guideline computerisation, with respect to the traditional text format, there are the disambiguation, the possibility of looking at the guideline at different levels of detail and the possibility of generating patient-tailored suggestions. Nevertheless, the connection of guidelines with patient records is still a challenging problem, as well as their effective integration into the clinical workflow. In this paper, we describe the evolution of our environment for representing and running guidelines. The main new features concern the choice of a commercial product as the middle layer with the electronic patient record, the consequent possibility of gathering information from different legacy systems, and the extension of this "virtual medical record" to the storage of process data. This last feature allows managing exceptions, i.e. decisions that do not comply with guidelines

    SARS-CoV-2 concentrations and virus-laden aerosol size distributions in outdoor air in north and south of Italy

    The COVID-19 disease spread at different rates in the different countries and in different regions of the same country, as happened in Italy. Transmission by contact or at close range due to large respiratory droplets is widely accepted, however, the role of airborne transmission due to small respiratory droplets emitted by infected individuals (also asymptomatic) is controversial. It was suggested that outdoor airborne transmission could play a role in determining the differences observed in the spread rate. Concentrations of virus-laden aerosol are still poorly known and contrasting results are reported, especially for outdoor environments. Here we investigated outdoor concentrations and size distributions of virus-laden aerosol simultaneously collected during the pandemic, in May 2020, in northern (Veneto) and southern (Apulia) regions of Italy. The two regions exhibited significantly different prevalence of COVID-19. Genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 (RNA) was determined, using both real time RT-PCR and ddPCR, in air samples collected using PM10 samplers and cascade impactors able to separate 12 size ranges from nanoparticles (diameter D < 0.056 ”m) up to coarse particles (D > 18 ”m). Air samples tested negative for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 at both sites, viral particles concentrations were <0.8 copies m−3 in PM10 and <0.4 copies m−3 in each size range investigated. Outdoor air in residential and urban areas was generally not infectious and safe for the public in both northern and southern Italy, with the possible exclusion of very crowded sites. Therefore, it is likely that outdoor airborne transmission does not explain the difference in the spread of COVID-19 observed in the two Italian regions

Some denitrifiers maintain the whole four-gene pathway, but others possess partial pathways. Partial denitrifiers may evolve through metabolic specialization whereas complete denitrifiers may adapt toward greater metabolic flexibility in nitrogen oxide (NOx–) utilization. Both exist within natural environments, but we lack an understanding of selective pressures driving the evolution toward each lifestyle. Here we investigate differences in growth rate, growth yield, denitrification dynamics, and the extent of intermediate metabolite accumulation under varying nutrient conditions between the model complete denitrifier Pseudomonas aeruginosa and a community of engineered specialists with deletions in the denitrification genes nar or nir. Our results in a mixed carbon medium indicate a growth rate vs. yield tradeoff between complete and partial denitrifiers, which varies with total nutrient availability and ratios of organic carbon to NOx–. We found that the cultures of both complete and partial denitrifiers accumulated nitrite and that the metabolic lifestyle coupled with nutrient conditions are responsible for the extent of nitrite accumulation.Funding for this work was provided by Simons Foundation award 622065 and an MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative seed grant to AB.     Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is currently the most effective diagnostic tool for detecting prostate cancer (PCa) and evaluating adenocarcinoma-mimicking lesions of the prostate gland, among which granulomatous prostatitis (GP) represents the most interesting diagnostic challenge. GP consists of a heterogeneous group of chronic inflammatory lesions that can be differentiated into four types: idiopathic, infective, iatrogenic, and associated with systemic granulomatous disease. The incidence of GP is growing due to the increase in endourological surgical interventions and the adoption of intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer; therefore, the difficulty lies in identifying specific features of GP on mpMRI to avoid the use of transrectal prostate biopsy as much as possible

    SAT0461 SHORT-TERM MONITORING OF DENOSUMAB EFFECT IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS RECEIVING AROMATASE INHIBITORS USING REMS TECHNOLOGY ON LUMBAR SPINE

    Background:Aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy in women with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC) causes accelerated bone loss and increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures as side effects. Denosumab (i.e. 60 mg twice a year) is a viable therapy against bone resorption, but the short-term monitoring of bone mineral density (BMD) change with time is still an unmet clinical need, since the current techniques (including dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, DXA) require 1-2 years between two consecutive measurements [1]. Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS), with high performance in terms of precision and repeatability [2], might be used in this setting of patients for short-term monitoring of bone health-related parameters.Objectives:The objective is the short-term monitoring of the effect of AIs with/without denosumab on bone health in BC patients using REMS and DXA scans at lumbar spine.Methods:Post-menopausal ER+ BC patients treated with adjuvant AIs were recruited. Two subgroups were identified, whether receiving also 60 mg of denosumab therapy every 6 months or not (named Group A and Group B, respectively). All patients underwent baseline DXA and REMS lumbar spine scans at time T0, previous to the first AI therapy, and after 12 months (time T1). REMS scan only was repeated also at 18 months (T2), since a 6-month interval between two consecutive scans is not recommended for DXA. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with both techniques.Results:Overall, 254 ER+ BC patients were enrolled (127 per group). The effect of denosumab on BMD is reported in Table. The BMD values obtained by DXA and REMS were not significantly different at T0 and T1, whereas the difference between Group A and B at T1 was statistically significant (p<0.001) both for REMS and DXA. At T2, REMS confirmed the increasing trend of BMD for Group A and the decreasing one for Group B, and the difference between groups was statistically significant (p<0.001). For each time point and each group, there were not statistically significant differences between DXA and REMS.Conclusion:Several studies have shown the effect of denosumab on BMD over a period not less than 2 years from the start of treatment.     Transverse prostate maximum sectional area can predict clinically significant prostate cancer in PI-RADS 3 lesions at multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging

    BackgroundTo evaluate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) parameters, such as TransPA (transverse prostate maximum sectional area), TransCGA (transverse central gland sectional area), TransPZA (transverse peripheral zone sectional area), and TransPAI (TransPZA/TransCGA ratio) in predicting prostate cancer (PCa) in prostate imaging reporting and data system (PI-RADS) 3 lesions. MethodsSensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV), the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and the best cut-off, were calculated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to evaluate the capability to predict PCa. ResultsOut of 120 PI-RADS 3 lesions, 54 (45.0%) were PCa with 34 (28.3%) csPCas. Median TransPA, TransCGA, TransPZA and TransPAI were 15.4cm(2), 9.1cm(2), 5.5cm(2) and 0.57, respectively. At multivariate analysis, location in the transition zone (OR=7.92, 95% CI: 2.70-23.29, P&lt;0.001) and TransPA (OR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.76-0.92, P&lt;0.001) were independent predictors of PCa. The TransPA (OR=0.90, 95% CI: 0.082-0.99, P=0.022) was an independent predictor of csPCa. The best cut-off of TransPA for csPCa was 18 (Sensitivity 88.2%, Specificity 37.2%, PPV 35.7%, NPV 88.9%). The discrimination (AUC) of the multivariate model was 0.627 (95% CI: 0.519-0.734, P&lt;0.031). ConclusionsIn PI-RADS 3 lesions, the TransPA could be useful in selecting patients requiring biopsy

    Incidence of chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea depending on the timing of treatment by menstrual cycle phase in women with early breast cancer

    Background: The aim of this study was to characterize the factors associated with chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea (CIA) and to examine whether the phase of the menstrual cycle at chemotherapy start could affect the rate of CIA in premenopausal women with early breast cancer. Methods: CIA was defined as the cessation of menses for at least 3 months during or after chemotherapy. Menstrual phase was defined as days 1-6, follicular phase as days 7-14, luteal phase as days 15-20 and premenstrual phase as days 21-28. Univariate and multivariate predictors of CIA were examined. Results: Among 111 premenopausal women, univariate analysis showed a higher incidence of CIA in patients treated in the follicular phase rather than in other menstrual cycle phases (67.6% compared with 45.5%; P=0.03).     A hybrid human and machine resource curation pipeline for the Neuroscience Information Framework

    The breadth of information resources available to researchers on the Internet continues to expand, particularly in light of recently implemented data-sharing policies required by funding agencies. However, the nature of dense, multifaceted neuroscience data and the design of contemporary search engine systems makes efficient, reliable and relevant discovery of such information a significant challenge. This challenge is specifically pertinent for online databases, whose dynamic content is ‘hidden’ from search engines. The Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF; http://www.neuinfo.org) was funded by the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research to address the problem of finding and utilizing neuroscience-relevant resources such as software tools, data sets, experimental animals and antibodies across the Internet. From the outset, NIF sought to provide an accounting of available resources, whereas developing technical solutions to finding, accessing and utilizing them. The curators therefore, are tasked with identifying and registering resources, examining data, writing configuration files to index and display data and keeping the contents current. In the initial phases of the project, all aspects of the registration and curation processes were manual. However, as the number of resources grew, manual curation became impractical. This report describes our experiences and successes with developing automated resource discovery and semiautomated type characterization with text-mining scripts that facilitate curation team efforts to discover, integrate and display new content. We also describe the DISCO framework, a suite of automated web services that significantly reduce manual curation efforts to periodically check for resource updates. Lastly, we discuss DOMEO, a semi-automated annotation tool that improves the discovery and curation of resources that are not necessarily website-based (i.e. reagents, software tools). Although the ultimate goal of automation was to reduce the workload of the curators, it has resulted in valuable analytic by-products that address accessibility, use and citation of resources that can now be shared with resource owners and the larger scientific community
