Invalid party wall awards and how to avoid them

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that persons with disabilities be integrated to the maximum extent possible, and that these persons cannot be excluded from participation. Intramural directors need to be proactive in this area. The benefits of intramural sports are vast, and they help many students become part of the college community. Forming an alliance with the Disability Services on campus, the first step, is the most vital aspect of making these programs successful. It is important to remember the difference between what can be done and what must be done. Even with the best of intentions, it is impossible to accommodate everyone, but modified games can be more inclusive. Program facilitators can use their imagination to modify rules to get even more students involved. Beginning a program like this can be a challenge, but the long-term impact is a program beneficial to persons with and without disabilities

Contrasting impact of androgens on male and female adiposity, fat distribution and insulin resistance in childhood and adolescence (EarlyBird 75)

Objectives: To investigate associations between androgens (testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate [DHEAS] and androstenedione), adiposity, fat distribution and insulin resistance (IR) during childhood and adolescence. Methods: Three hundred and seven children (170 [55.4%] boys; 137 [44.6%] girls)recruited at age 5 and studied annually until age 16: androgens (liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry), anthropometry, body composition (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) and IR (homeostasis model assessment). Results: Early adiposity was associated with earlier detection of androstenedione in both sexes, and DHEAS in boys. At puberty, higher androgen levels were associated with favourable metabolic changes in boys, but adverse metabolic effects in girls. In boys, higher free testosterone (FT) was associated with lower body fat and android/gynoid fat ratio (AGR) (both P < .001), but in girls higher total testosterone was associated with higher AGR. In girls only, higher androstenedione (P = .02) and FT(P = .01) was associated with higher IR during puberty. Conclusions: In pre-pubertal children, adiposity is associated with higher secretion of androgen precursors. After pubertal onset, higher testosterone is associated with lower adiposity and AGR in boys, but higher AGR and IR in girls. The Neutral Hydrogen Bridge between M31 and M33

The Green Bank Telescope has been used to search for 21cm HI emission over a large area between the galaxies M31 and M33 in an attempt to confirm at 9.1 arcmin angular resolution the detection by Braun and Thilker (2004) of a very extensive neutral gas "bridge" between the two systems at the level NHI approximately 10^{17} cm^{-2}. We detect HI emission at several locations up to 120 kpc in projected distance from M31, at least half the distance to M33, with velocities similar to that of the galaxies, confirming the essence of the Braun and Thilker discovery. The HI does not appear to be associated with the extraplanar high-velocity clouds of either galaxy. In two places we measure NHI > 3 x 10^{18} cm^{-2}, indicative of concentrations of HI with ~10^5 solar masses on scales <2 kpc, but over most of the field we have only 5sigma upper limits of NHI <= 1.4 x 10^{18} cm^{-2}. In very deep measurements in two directions HI lines were detected at a few 10^{17} cm^{-2}. The absence of emission at another location to a 5sigma limit NHI <= 1.5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} suggests that the HI bridge is either patchy or confined to within ~125 kpc of M31. The measurements also cover two of M31's dwarf galaxies, And II and And XV, but in neither case is there evidence for associated HI at the 5sigma level of 1.4 x 10^4 solar masses of HI for And II, and 9.3 x 10^3 solar masses for And XV.Comment: Submitted to the Astronomical Journa

Search for Diffuse Neutral Hydrogen and HI Clouds in the NGC 2403 Group

We have observed the NGC 2403 group of galaxies using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in a search for faint, extended neutral hydrogen clouds similar to the clouds found around the M81/M82 group, which is located approximately 250 kpc from the NGC 2403 group along the same filament of galaxies. For an HI cloud with a size < 10 kpc within 50 kpc of a group galaxy, our 7-sigma mass detection limit is 2.2 x 10^6 M_sun for a cloud with a linewidth of 20 km/s, over the velocity range from -890 to 1750 km/s. At this sensitivity level we detect 3 new HI clouds in the direction of the group, as well as the known galaxies. The mean velocity of the new clouds differs from that of the group galaxies by more than 250 km/s, but are in the range of Milky Way High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) in that direction. It is most likely that the clouds are part of the Milky Way HVC population. If HI clouds exist in the NGC 2403 group, their masses are less than 2.2 x 10^6 M_sun. We also compared our results to structures that are expected based on recent cosmological models, and found none of the predicted clouds. If NGC 2403 is surrounded by a population of dark matter halos similar to those proposed for the Milky Way in recent models, our observations imply that their HI content is less than 1% of their total mass.Comment: Accepted by A
