    X-ray Emission Properties of Large Scale Jets, Hotspots and Lobes in Active Galactic Nuclei

    We examine a systematic comparison of jet-knots, hotspots and radio lobes recently observed with Chandra and ASCA. This report will discuss the origin of their X-ray emissions and investigate the dynamics of the jets. The data was compiled at well sampled radio (5GHz) and X-ray frequencies (1keV) for more than 40 radio galaxies. We examined three models for the X-ray production: synchrotron (SYN), synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and external Compton on CMB photons (EC). For the SYN sources -- mostly jet-knots in nearby low-luminosity radio galaxies -- X-ray photons are produced by ultrarelativistic electrons with energies 10-100 TeV that must be accelerated in situ. For the other objects, conservatively classified as SSC or EC sources, a simple formulation of calculating the ``expected'' X-ray fluxes under an equipartition hypothesis is presented. We confirmed that the observed X-ray fluxes are close to the expected ones for non-relativistic emitting plasma velocities in the case of radio lobes and majority of hotspots, whereas considerable fraction of jet-knots is too bright at X-rays to be explained in this way. We examined two possibilities to account for the discrepancy in a framework of the inverse-Compton model: (1) magnetic field is much smaller than the equipartition value, and (2) the jets are highly relativistic on kpc/Mpc scales. We concluded, that if the inverse-Compton model is the case, the X-ray bright jet-knots are most likely far from the minimum-power condition. We also briefly discuss the other possibility, namely that the observed X-ray emission from all of the jet-knots is synchrotron in origin.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, vol.62

    An X-Ray Dip in the X-Ray Transient 4U 1630-47

    An x-ray dip was observed during a 1996 Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observation of the recurrent x-ray transient 4U 1630-47. During the dip, the 2-60 keV x-ray flux drops by a factor of about three, and, at the lowest point of the dip, the x-ray spectrum is considerably softer than at non-dip times. We find that the 4U 1630-47 dip is best explained by absorption of the inner part of an accretion disk, while the outer part of the disk is unaffected. The spectral evolution during the dip is adequately described by the variation of a single parameter, the column density obscuring the inner disk.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Is our Sun a Singleton?

    Most stars are formed in a cluster or association, where the number density of stars can be high. This means that a large fraction of initially-single stars will undergo close encounters with other stars and/or exchange into binaries. We describe how such close encounters and exchange encounters can affect the properties of a planetary system around a single star. We define a singleton as a single star which has never suffered close encounters with other stars or spent time within a binary system. It may be that planetary systems similar to our own solar system can only survive around singletons. Close encounters or the presence of a stellar companion will perturb the planetary system, often leaving planets on tighter and more eccentric orbits. Thus planetary systems which initially resembled our own solar system may later more closely resemble some of the observed exoplanet systems.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure.     Surfaces roughness effects on the transmission of Gaussian beams by anisotropic parallel plates

    Influence of the plate surfaces roughness in precise ellipsometry experiments is studied. The realistic case of a Gaussian laser beam crossing a uniaxial platelet is considered. Expression for the transmittance is determined using the first order perturbation theory. In this frame, it is shown that interference takes place between the specular transmitted beam and the scattered field. This effect is due to the angular distribution of the Gaussian beam and is of first order in the roughness over wavelength ratio. As an application, a numerical simulation of the effects of quartz roughness surfaces at normal incidence is provided.     B(E3;01+→31−)B(E3; 0_1^+ \to 3_1^-) transition matrix elements have been measured for even-mass 124−134^{124-134}Xe nuclei using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. The trends in energy E(3−)E(3^-) and B(E3;01+→31−)B(E3; 0_1^+ \to 3_1^-) excitation strengths are well reproduced using phenomenological models based on a strong coupling picture with a soft quadrupole mode and an increasing occupation of the intruder h11/2h_{11/2} orbital.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, PRC in pres

    Kripke Semantics for Martin-L\"of's Extensional Type Theory

    It is well-known that simple type theory is complete with respect to non-standard set-valued models. Completeness for standard models only holds with respect to certain extended classes of models, e.g., the class of cartesian closed categories. Similarly, dependent type theory is complete for locally cartesian closed categories. However, it is usually difficult to establish the coherence of interpretations of dependent type theory, i.e., to show that the interpretations of equal expressions are indeed equal. Several classes of models have been used to remedy this problem. We contribute to this investigation by giving a semantics that is standard, coherent, and sufficiently general for completeness while remaining relatively easy to compute with. Our models interpret types of Martin-L\"of's extensional dependent type theory as sets indexed over posets or, equivalently, as fibrations over posets. This semantics can be seen as a generalization to dependent type theory of the interpretation of intuitionistic first-order logic in Kripke models. This yields a simple coherent model theory, with respect to which simple and dependent type theory are sound and complete

    Mutagenesis of recombinant protein C inhibitor reactive site residues alters target proteinase specificity

    Protein C inhibitor (PCI) is a heparin-binding plasma serine proteinase inhibitor (serpin) which is thought to be a physiological regulator of activated protein C. We are using recombinant PCI (rPCI) to study structural determinants of target proteinase specificity. A cDNA encoding UII-length PCI has been expressed as a fully active proteinase inhibitor using Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (baculovirus). rPCI was expressed minimally 4 days after infection and could be expressed either in Sf9 or High-Five cells. rPCI bound heparin and was conveniently purified with heparin-Sepharose (eluting >0.5 m NaCl)

    Questioning policy, youth participation and lifestyle sports

    Young people have been identified as a key target group for whom participation in sport and physical activity could have important benefits to health and wellbeing and consequently have been the focus of several government policies to increase participation in the UK. Lifestyle sports represent one such strategy for encouraging and sustaining new engagements in sport and physical activity in youth groups, however, there is at present a lack of understanding of the use of these activities within policy contexts. This paper presents findings from a government initiative which sought to increase participation in sport for young people through provision of facilities for mountain biking in a forest in south-east England. Findings from qualitative research with 40 young people who participated in mountain biking at the case study location highlight the importance of non-traditional sports as a means to experience the natural environments through forms of consumption which are healthy, active and appeal to their identities. In addition, however, the paper raises questions over the accessibility of schemes for some individuals and social groups, and the ability to incorporate sports which are inherently participant-led into state-managed schemes. Lifestyle sports such as mountain biking involve distinct forms of participation which present a challenge for policy-makers who seek to create and maintain sustainable communities of youth participants
