    Polarization-Rotated Waveguide Antennas for Base-Station Applications

    © 2017 IEEE. A novel base-station antenna element is proposed. It consists of an artificial surface composed of parallel strips rotating in the polarization direction and a segment of a rectangular waveguide. The surface is designed on a single-sided substrate, which has the same area as the aperture of the waveguide. To achieve the polarization rotation, the parallel strips on the surface are rotated by 45° with respect to the orientation of the waveguide antenna. By adding the surface, the linear polarization direction of the rectangular waveguide antenna rotates by 45° to comply with the requirements of the cellular industry. To verify the simulation results, the proposed antenna was fabricated and measured. Results show that the antenna has an operating bandwidth from 698-960 MHz, where a stable radiation pattern is achieved

    Physical Activity and Fundamental Motor Skill Outcome: A Quasi‑Experimental Study Among Rural Pre‑schoolers in Kuching, Sarawak

    Fundamental movement skills (FMS)-oriented school-based intervention allows children to be more competent and interested to participate in a wider range of physical activities. This study aimed to determine the physical activity and fundamental motor skills outcome from a school-based intervention programme among rural preschoolers in Kuching. It used a quasi-experimental non-randomised design with a total of 153 children from 9 government indergartens. For physical activity level, there was a signifcant diference between the intervention and control group at the 3 months, F (1, 151)=3.90, p=0.05, with a ŋ2=0.025 and 6 months-time duration, F (1, 151)=55.70, p<0.001, with a ŋ2=0.27. The same pattern of interaction effect (time * group) was also found in gross motor skill, F (2, 150)=80.9, p<0.001, ŋ2=0.52, where the mean score in intervention group was greater than in control group. It is important to understand in depth each of the skills components involved in locomotor and object control and also its diferences between the boys and girls, as it can help in planning of the module of an intervention programme. Object control skills have higher predictive value in engaging in wider range of PA which could be the possible reason why boys are more active than girls

    Optimized T1- and T2-weighted volumetric brain imaging as a diagnostic tool in very preterm neonates.

    BACKGROUND: T1- and T2-W MR sequences used for obtaining diagnostic information and morphometric measurements in the neonatal brain are frequently acquired using different imaging protocols. Optimizing one protocol for obtaining both kinds of information is valuable. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether high-resolution T1- and T2-W volumetric sequences optimized for preterm brain imaging could provide both diagnostic and morphometric value. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty preterm neonates born between 24 and 32 weeks' gestational age were scanned during the first 2 weeks after birth. T1- and T2-W high-resolution sequences were optimized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio and scan time and compared to conventional spin-echo-based sequences. RESULTS: No differences were found between conventional and high-resolution T1-W sequences for diagnostic confidence, image quality and motion artifacts. A preference for conventional over high-resolution T2-W sequences for image quality was observed. High-resolution T1 images provided better delineation of thalamic myelination and the superior temporal sulcus. No differences were found for detection of myelination and sulcation using conventional and high-resolution T2-W images. CONCLUSION: High-resolution T1- and T2-W volumetric sequences can be used in clinical MRI in the very preterm brain to provide both diagnostic and morphometric information

    A novel anxiogenic role for the delta opioid receptor expressed in GABAergic forebrain neurons.

    BACKGROUND: The delta opioid receptor (DOR) is broadly expressed throughout the nervous system; it regulates chronic pain, emotional responses, motivation, and memory. Neural circuits underlying DOR activities have been poorly explored by genetic approaches. We used conditional mouse mutagenesis to elucidate receptor function in GABAergic neurons of the forebrain. METHODS: We characterized DOR distribution in the brain of Dlx5/6-CreXOprd1(fl/fl) (Dlx-DOR) mice and tested main central DOR functions through behavioral testing. RESULTS: The DOR proteins were strongly deleted in olfactory bulb and striatum and remained intact in cortex and basolateral amygdala. Olfactory perception, circadian activity, and despair-like behaviors were unchanged. In contrast, locomotor stimulant effects of SNC80 (DOR agonist) and SKF81297 (D1 agonist) were abolished and increased, respectively. The Dlx-DOR mice showed lower levels of anxiety in the elevated plus maze, opposing the known high anxiety in constitutive DOR knockout animals. Also, Dlx-DOR mice reached the food more rapidly in a novelty suppressed feeding task, despite their lower motivation for food reward observed in an operant paradigm. Finally, c-fos protein staining after novelty suppressed feeding was strongly reduced in amygdala, concordant with the low anxiety phenotype of Dlx-DOR mice. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate that DORs expressed in the forebrain mediate the described locomotor effect of SNC80 and inhibit D1-stimulated hyperactivity. Our data also reveal an unanticipated anxiogenic role for this particular DOR subpopulation, with a potential novel adaptive role. In emotional responses, DORs exert dual anxiolytic and anxiogenic roles, both of which may have implications in the area of anxiety disorders
