    Total organic carbon in the Bowland-Hodder Unit of the southern Widmerpool Gulf: a discussion

    This review of the article by Kenomore et al. (2017) on the total organic carbon (TOC) evaluation of the Bowland Shale Formation in the Widmerpool Gulf sub-basin (southern Pennine Basin, UK) reveals a number of deficiencies, rooted mostly in an inadequate appreciation of the local Carboniferous stratigraphy. Kenomore et al. use the ΔLog R, the ‘Passey’ method after Passey et al. (1990), to evaluate the TOC content in two boreholes in the Widmerpool Gulf: Rempstone 1 and Old Dalby 1. We show here that Kenomore and co-authors used maturity data, published by Andrews (2013), from different formations to calibrate their TOC models of the Bowland Shale Formation (Late Mississippian–Early Pennsylvanian); the Morridge Formation in Rempstone 1 and the Widmerpool Formation in Old Dalby 1. We contest that this gives viable TOC estimates for the Bowland Shale Formation and that because of the location of the boreholes these TOC models are not representative over the whole of the Widmerpool Gulf. The pyrite content of the mudstones in the Widmerpool Gulf also surpasses the threshold where it becomes an influence on geophysical well logs. Aside from these stratigraphic and lithologic issues, some methodological weaknesses were not adequately resolved by Kenomore and co-authors. No lithological information is available for the Rock-Eval samples used for the maturity calibration, which because of the interbedded nature of the source formations has implications for the modelling exercise. We recommend that more geochemical data from a larger array of boreholes covering a wider area, proximal and distal, of the basin are collected before any inferences on TOC are made. This is necessary in the complex Bowland Shale system where lithological changes occur on a centimetre scale and correlations between the different sub basins are not well understood

    A generally covariant extension of general relativity (GR) in which a dynamical unit timelike vector field is coupled to the metric is studied in the asymptotic weak field limit of spherically symmetric static solutions.     Mechanosensitive Self-Replication Driven by Self-Organization

    Self-replicating molecules are likely to have played an important role in the origin of life, and a small number of fully synthetic self-replicators have already been described. Yet it remains an open question which factors most effectively bias the replication toward the far-from-equilibrium distributions characterizing even simple organisms. We report here two self-replicating peptide-derived macrocycles that emerge from a small dynamic combinatorial library and compete for a common feedstock. Replication is driven by nanostructure formation, resulting from the assembly of the peptides into fibers held together by β sheets. Which of the two replicators becomes dominant is influenced by whether the sample is shaken or stirred. These results establish that mechanical forces can act as a selection pressure in the competition between replicators and can determine the outcome of a covalent synthesis.

    Highly selective hydrogenation of furfural over supported Pt nanoparticles under mild conditions

    The selective liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Pt nanoparticles supported on SiO₂, ZnO, γ-Al2O₃, CeO₂ is reported under extremely mild conditions. Ambient hydrogen pressure, and temperatures as low as 50 °C are shown sufficient to drive furfural hydrogenation with high conversion and >99% selectivity to furfuryl alcohol. Strong support and solvent dependencies are observed, with methanol and n-butanol proving excellent solvents for promoting high furfuryl alcohol yields over uniformly dispersed 4 nm Pt nanoparticles over MgO, CeO₂ and γ-Al₂O₃. In contrast, non-polar solvents conferred poor furfural conversion, while ethanol favored acetal by-product formation. The elastic properties of structured materials are often averaged over subvolumes of various scales inside the material. For subvolumes smaller than a representative volume element, simple volume-averaging of the stress and strain may not preserve the elastic energy. We introduce an averaging process which preserves the energy for all boundary conditions. This averaging process emphasizes the parts of the material which carry the most stress. Here the effective strain is weighted by the local stress, and can be interpreted as an average strain over all paths taken by loads and forces through the volume. This alternative effective strain may be especially appropriate for materials with voids, such as foams and granular matter, as the averaging only involves the material itself. For uniform boundary conditions the weighted strain matches the volume-averaged strain. This paper investigates the properties of this weighted strain tensor. First, for each path taken by loads and forces through the volume we can measure a net length as well as a net extension due to the linear deformation. The weighted effective strain equals the ratio of average length to average extension, where the averaging is over all possible force paths. Thus this method provides a connection to load path analysis. Secondly, even when the average rotation within the subvolume is zero, there may be local fluctuations in the rotation field. These rotations can act like a mechanism, transferring elastic energy between boundaries or degrees of freedom. The effective strain defined here highlights this mechanism effect

    Antibiotic susceptibilities of Haemophilus influenzae in central Scotland

    ObjectiveTo ascertain the incidence of antibiotic resistance in Haemophilus influenzae in central Scotland and the β-lactamases produced by these isolates.MethodsA total of 213 H. influenzae isolates from four medical lefts in Scotland [Aberdeen (n = 58), Edinburgh (n = 55), Glasgow (n = 64) and Dundee (n = 36)] were tested for susceptibility to a range of antimicrobials including β-lactams, β-lactam/β-lactamase-inhibitor combinations, and a representative 4-quinolone, antifolate and macrolide. Susceptibility testing of the β-lactam/β-lactamase-inhibitor combination amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid was conducted at both 2:1 and 4:1 ratios and with clavulanic acid fixed at a concentration of 2 mg/L. Each strain was further investigated for the presence of β-lactamase activity.ResultsAlthough the incidence of resistance to amoxicillin was 15%, in the presence of clavulanic acid, this resistance was reduced to 4.2%, 5.6% and 4.2% with the 2:1 ratio, 4:1 ratio and 2 mg/L fixed concentration, respectively. Sixteen percent of the isolates demonstrated immediate β-lactamase production. Isoelectric focusing showed that 77.4%, 16.1% and 6.5% of the β-lactamase-positive strains were found to contain TEM-1, VAT-1 and both TEM-1 and VAT-1 β-lactamases, respectively. A further 29% of the strains were recognized as being β-lactamase-positive after prolonged incubation with nitrocephin.ConclusionsThis study suggests that current testing for β-lactamases may underestimate the prevalence of β-lactamase production in H. influenzae

    Water-wave scattering by a periodic array of arbitrary bodies

    An algebraically exact solution to the problem of linear water-wave scattering by a periodic array of scatterers is presented in which the scatterers may be of arbitrary shape. The method of solution is based on an interaction theory in which the incident wave on each body from all the other bodies in the array is expressed in the respective local cylindrical eigenfunction expansion. We show how to efficiently calculate the slowly convergent terms which arise in the formulation and how to calculate the scattered field far from the array. The application to the problem of linear acoustic scattering by cylinders with arbitrary cross-section is also discussed. Numerical calculations are presented to show that our results agree with previous calculations. We present some computations for the case of fixed, rigid and elastic floating bodies of negligible draft concentrating on presenting the amplitudes of the scattered waves as functions of the incident angle

    Beyond the simple Proximity Force Approximation: geometrical effects on the non-retarded Casimir interaction

    We study the geometrical corrections to the simple Proximity Force Approximation for the non-retarded Casimir force. We present analytical results for the force between objects of various shapes and substrates, and between pairs of objects. We compare the results to those from more exact numerical calculations.     Creating a Healthy Classroom Environment in Multicultural Counseling Courses

    To assist educators in developing transformative learning environments, and effectively engaging in difficult dialogues regarding multicultural counseling topics, we conducted a qualitative study to systemically examine the perceptions and reactions of twenty graduate counselor education students enrolled in a multicultural counseling course. In this particular course, students experienced various learning environments all designed to enhance the topic of the day. Students were instructed to journal their thoughts, which became the raw data that was later, analyzed for themes. Students reported a need to be in an environment where there was trust, an ongoing need to reflect on the content, and difficulty discussing their school experiences with friends/family who are not in the helping profession
