Geometric approach to Fletcher's ideal penalty function

[Originally produced as UH Technical Report 280, 1993]In this note, we derive a geometric formulation of an ideal penalty function for equality constrained problems. This differentiable penalty function requires no parameter estimation or adjustment, has numerical conditioning similar to that of the target function from which it is constructed, and also has the desirable property that the strict second-order constrained minima of the target function are precisely those strict second-order unconstrained minima of the penalty function which satisfy the constraints. Such a penalty function can be used to establish termination properties for algorithms which avoid ill-conditioned steps. Numerical values for the penalty function and its derivatives can be calculated efficiently using automatic differentiation techniques.Peer reviewe
Phonon self-energy and origin of anomalous neutron scattering spectra in SnTe and PbTe thermoelectrics
The anharmonic lattice dynamics of rock-salt thermoelectric compounds SnTe
and PbTe are investigated with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and
first-principles calculations. The experiments show that, surprisingly,
although SnTe is closer to the ferroelectric instability, phonon spectra in
PbTe exhibit a more anharmonic character. This behavior is reproduced in
first-principles calculations of the temperature-dependent phonon self-energy.
Our simulations reveal how the nesting of phonon dispersions induces prominent
features in the self-energy, which account for the measured INS spectra and
their temperature dependence. We establish that the phase-space for
three-phonon scattering processes, rather than just the proximity to the
lattice instability, is the mechanism determining the complex spectrum of the
transverse-optical ferroelectric mode
A calculus for distrust and mistrust
Properties of trust are becoming widely studied in several applications within the computational domain. On the contrary, negative trust attribution is less well-defined and related issues are yet to be approached and resolved. We present a natural deduction calculus for trust protocols and its negative forms, distrust and mistrust. The calculus deals efficiently with forms of trust transitivity and negative trust multiplication and we briefly illustrate some possible applications
The effect of crop residue and fertilizer use on pearl millet yields in Niger
A field study was conducted over a 4-year period in Niger, West Africa, to determine the effects of crop residue (CR), fertilizer, or a combination of crop residue and fertilizer(CRF) on yields of pearl millet(Pennisetum glaucum[L.] R.Br.). Despite a decline in yields of control plots (initial yields were 280kg grain ha-1 declining to 75 kg grain ha - 1 over 4 years), yield of fertilizer plots were maintained at 800-1,000 kg grain ha-1. Continued application of CR slowly augmented yields to levels similar to those of the fertilized plots. The effects of CR and fertilizer were approximately additive in the CRF plots. Addition of CR and fertilizer increased soil water use over the control by 57 mm to 268 mm in an average season and helped trap wind-blown soil. These plots tended to exhibit slightly higer soil pH and lower A1 saturation than did the fertilized treatments. Expression of neonatal Fc receptor in the eye
PURPOSE: The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) plays a critical role in the homeostasis and degradation of immunoglobulin G (IgG). It mediates the transport of IgG across epithelial cell barriers and recycles IgG in endothelial cells back into the bloodstream. These functions critically depend on the binding of FcRn to the Fc domain of IgG. The half-life and distribution of intravitreally injected anti-VEGF molecules containing IgG-Fc domains might therefore be affected by FcRn expressed in the eye. In order to establish whether FcRn-Fc(IgG) interactions may occur in the eye, we studied the mRNA and protein distribution of FcRn in postmortem ocular tissue.
METHODS: We used qPCR to study mRNA expression of the transmembrane chain of FcRn (FCGRT) in retina, optic nerve, RPE/choroid plexus, ciliary body/iris plexus, lens, cornea, and conjunctiva isolated from mouse, rat, pig, and human postmortem eyes and used immunohistochemistry to determine the pattern of FcRn expression in FCGRT-transgenic mouse and human eyes.
RESULTS: In all four tested species, Fcgrt mRNA was expressed in the retina, RPE/choroid, and the ciliary body/iris, while immunohistochemistry documented FcRn protein expression in the ciliary body epithelium, macrophages, and endothelial cells in the retinal and choroidal vasculature.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that FcRn has the potential to interact with IgG-Fc domains in the ciliary epithelium and retinal and choroidal vasculature, which might affect the half-life and distribution of intravitreally injected Fc-carrying molecules
