    First evaluation of semidirect recycling methods for the reclamation of cemented carbides based on a literature survey

    At the moment the industrially applied techniques for cemented carbide reclamation feature severaldeficiencies. Depending on the process route, obstacles consist in high energy and chemical consumption(indirect recycling methods) or a deterioration of the recycled product in comparison with the primarymaterial (direct recycling approach). Therefore, an alternative middle course provided by semidirectrecycling processes seems promising. Accordingly, the coating materials as well as the binder metals areleached off the substrate keeping the hard phase unaffected and ready for reuse. However, the literaturereports various difficulties like the slow dissolution of the binder, particularly if the scrap consists of largerpieces, contains a low binder metal perecentage or a small grain size. Furthermore, oxidation of the cementedtungsten occurs as an undesired reaction, causing even slower lixiviation and a contamination of the recycledproduct.Due the fact of an inexistent comparable systematic analysis of the semidirect recycling procedures, thisarticle deals with a primary screening of potential combinations of acids, additives and oxidizing agentsfound in a literature survey. All experiments took place under the same conditions in a temperature controlleddouble-walled reaction vessel, varying only the molar concentrations of the different species as used inliterature. A crucial point comprised of the development of an appropriate sample preparation, which alloweda simplification of the analysis along with its applicability in future kinetic investigations of selectedsolutions. As a result, promising combinations of chemicals are ready for further investigations determinedby penetration depth and abrasion of the hard metal substrate.     Reduced Rate of Inpatient Hospital Admissions in 18 German University Hospitals During the COVID-19 Lockdown

    The COVID-19 pandemic has caused strains on health systems worldwide disrupting routine hospital services for all non-COVID patients. Within this retrospective study, we analyzed inpatient hospital admissions across 18 German university hospitals during the 2020 lockdown period compared to 2018. Patients admitted to hospital between January 1 and May 31, 2020 and the corresponding periods in 2018 and 2019 were included in this study. Data derived from electronic health records were collected and analyzed using the data integration center infrastructure implemented in the university hospitals that are part of the four consortia funded by the German Medical Informatics Initiative. Admissions were grouped and counted by ICD 10 chapters and specific reasons for treatment at each site. Pooled aggregated data were centrally analyzed with descriptive statistics to compare absolute and relative differences between time periods of different years. The results illustrate how care process adoptions depended on the COVID-19 epidemiological situation and the criticality of the disease. Overall inpatient hospital admissions decreased by 35% in weeks 1 to 4 and by 30.3% in weeks 5 to 8 after the lockdown announcement compared to 2018. Even hospital admissions for critical care conditions such as malignant cancer treatments were reduced. We also noted a high reduction of emergency admissions such as myocardial infarction (38.7%), whereas the reduction in stroke admissions was smaller (19.6%). In contrast, we observed a considerable reduction in admissions for non-critical clinical situations, such as hysterectomies for benign tumors (78.8%) and hip replacements due to arthrosis (82.4%). In summary, our study shows that the university hospital admission rates in Germany were substantially reduced following the national COVID-19 lockdown. These included critical care or emergency conditions in which deferral is expected to impair clinical outcomes. Future studies are needed to delineate how appropriate medical care of critically ill patients can be maintained during a pandemic

    Network for Early Onset Cystic Kidney Diseases—A Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Approach to Hereditary Cystic Kidney Diseases in Childhood

    Hereditary cystic kidney diseases comprise a complex group of genetic disorders representing one of the most common causes of end-stage renal failure in childhood. The main representatives are autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, nephronophthisis, Bardet–Biedl syndrome, and hepatocyte nuclear factor-1beta nephropathy. Within the last years, genetic efforts have brought tremendous progress for the molecular understanding of hereditary cystic kidney diseases identifying more than 70 genes. Yet, genetic heterogeneity, phenotypic variability, a lack of reliable genotype–phenotype correlations and the absence of disease-specific biomarkers remain major challenges for physicians treating children with cystic kidney diseases. To tackle these challenges comprehensive scientific approaches are urgently needed that match the ongoing “revolution” in genetics and molecular biology with an improved efficacy of clinical data collection. Network for early onset cystic kidney diseases (NEOCYST) is a multidisciplinary, multicenter collaborative combining a detailed collection of clinical data with translational scientific approaches addressing the genetic, molecular, and functional background of hereditary cystic kidney diseases. Consisting of seven work packages, including an international registry as well as a biobank, NEOCYST is not only dedicated to current scientific questions, but also provides a platform for longitudinal clinical surveillance and provides precious sources for high-quality research projects and future clinical trials. Funded by the German Federal Government, the NEOCYST collaborative started in February 2016. Here, we would like to introduce the rationale, design, and objectives of the network followed by a short overview on the current state of progress
