Spatio-temporal variation of conversational utterances on Twitter

    Get PDF
Conversations reflect the existing norms of a language. Previously, we found that utterance lengths in English fictional conversations in books and movies have shortened over a period of 200 years. In this work, we show that this shortening occurs even for a brief period of 3 years (September 2009-December 2012) using 229 million utterances from Twitter. Furthermore, the subset of geographically-tagged tweets from the United States show an inverse proportion between utterance lengths and the state-level percentage of the Black population. We argue that shortening of utterances can be explained by the increasing usage of jargon including coined words.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, published in PLoS On

Similarity of percolation thresholds on the hcp and fcc lattices

Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations were performed in order to determine the precise values of the critical thresholds for site (pc,Shcp=0.1992555±0.0000010p^{hcp}_{c,S} = 0.199 255 5 \pm 0.000 001 0) and bond (pc,Bhcp=0.1201640±0.0000010p^{hcp}_{c,B} = 0.120 164 0 \pm 0.000 001 0) percolation on the hcp lattice to compare with previous precise measuremens on the fcc lattice. Also, exact enumeration of the hcp and fcc lattices was performed and yielded generating functions and series for the zeroth, first, and second moments of both lattices. When these series and the values of pcp_c are compared to those for the fcc lattice, it is apparent that the site percolation thresholds are different; however, the bond percolation thresholds are equal within error bars, and the series only differ slightly in the higher order terms, suggesting the actual values are very close to each other, if not identical.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Group completion and units in I-spaces

The category of I-spaces is the diagram category of spaces indexed by finite sets and injections. This is a symmetric monoidal category whose commutative monoids model all E-infinity spaces. Working in the category of I-spaces enables us to simplify and strengthen previous work on group completion and units of E-infinity spaces. As an application we clarify the relation to Gamma-spaces and show how the spectrum of units associated with a commutative symmetric ring spectrum arises through a chain of Quillen adjunctions.Comment: v3: 43 pages. ChlamyCyc - a comprehensive database and web-portal centered on _Chlamydomonas reinhardtii_

    Get PDF
*Background* - The unicellular green alga _Chlamydomonas reinhardtii_ is an important eukaryotic model organism for the study of photosynthesis and growth, as well as flagella development and other cellular processes. In the era of high-throughput technologies there is an imperative need to integrate large-scale data sets from high-throughput experimental techniques using computational methods and database resources to provide comprehensive information about the whole cellular system of a single organism.
*Results* - In the framework of the German Systems Biology initiative GoFORSYS a pathway/genome database and web-portal for _Chlamydomonas reinhardtii_ (ChlamyCyc) was established, which currently features about 270 metabolic pathways with related genes, enzymes, and compound information. ChlamyCyc was assembled using an integrative approach combining the recently published genome sequence, bioinformatics methods, and experimental data from metabolomics and proteomics experiments. We analyzed and integrated a combination of primary and secondary database resources, such as existing genome annotations from JGI, EST collections, orthology information, and MapMan classification.
*Conclusion* - Chlamycyc provides a curated and integrated systems biology repository that will enable and assist in systematic studies of fundamental cellular processes in _Chlamydomonas reinhardtii_. The ChlamyCyc database and web-portal is freely available under http://chlamycyc.mpimp-golm.mpg.de

Could Mineralocorticoids Play a Role in the Pathophysiology of Open Angle Glaucoma?

    Get PDF
Since the pathomechanisms of primary open angle glaucoma are still not defined, different aspects related to this topic have to be discussed and further investigated. Possible candidates are the mineralocorticoids, which are known to lower intraocular pressure. A data search and personal investigations assume a limited role of mineralocorticoids for the development of glaucoma. Specific experiments for a final conclusion are, however, not yet performed

Pulmonary Fissures – How do they form?

    Get PDF
For pulmonary surgery, the variation of pulmonary fissures matters but little is known about their development. Early fixation of the visceral pleura seems to be mediated by myofibroblasts and extracellular components like fibronectin. So far, no concepts explain sufficiently the origin of the shape and orientation of these fissures

The present case report from the dissection room shows a rare and unique paracolic position of the vermiform appendix reaching almost up to the liver in a white European man. The appearance of the gut associated lymphoepithelial tissue was hypoplastic

Anger in the Courtroom: The Effects of Attorney Gender and Emotion on Juror Perceptions

    Get PDF
This study sought to examine the effects of gender stereotypes of emotional expression on jurors’ perceptions of an attorney’s competence. Participants watched a video of a closing statement of a male or female attorney expressing either anger or neutral emotions and were asked to give a verdict and rate the attorney’s competence. Participants rated an angry male attorney highest in competence and an angry female attorney lowest in competence. Results also showed that participants who viewed a male attorney were more likely to attribute the attorney’s emotions to the situation compared to participants who viewed a female attorney. The implications of this study for attorney strategies are discussed
