    A non local unitary vector model in 3-D

    We present a unified analysis of single excitation vector models in 3D. We show that there is a family of first order master actions related by duality transformations which interpolate between the different models. We use a Hamiltonian (2+1) analysis to show the equivalence of the self-dual and topologically massive models with a covariant non local model which propagates also a single massive excitation. It is shown how the non local terms appears naturally in the path integral framework.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

    Pooled analysis of higher versus lower blood pressure targets for vasopressor therapy septic and vasodilatory shock

    PURPOSE: Guidelines for shock recommend mean arterial pressure (MAP) targets for vasopressor therapy of at least 65 mmHg and, until recently, suggested that patients with underlying chronic hypertension and atherosclerosis may benefit from higher targets. We conducted an individual patient-data meta-analysis of recent trials to determine if patient variables modify the effect of different MAP targets. METHODS: We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for randomized controlled trials of higher versus lower blood pressure targets for vasopressor therapy in adult patients in shock (until November 2017). After obtaining individual patient data from both eligible trials, we used a modified version of the Cochrane Collaboration\u27s instrument to assess the risk of bias of included trials. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality. RESULTS: Included trials enrolled 894 patients. Controlling for trial and site, the OR for 28-day mortality for the higher versus lower MAP targets was 1.15 (95% CI 0.87-1.52). Treatment effect varied by duration of vasopressors before randomization (interaction p = 0.017), but not by chronic hypertension, congestive heart failure or age. Risk of death increased in higher MAP groups among patients on vasopressors > 6 h before randomization (OR 3.00, 95% CI 1.33-6.74). CONCLUSIONS: Targeting higher blood pressure targets may increase mortality in patients who have been treated with vasopressors for more than 6 h. Lower blood pressure targets were not associated with patient-important adverse events in any subgroup, including chronically hypertensive patients

    Two-mirror Schwarzschild aplanats. Basic relations

    It is shown that the theory of aplanatic two-mirror telescopes developed by Karl Schwarzschild in 1905 leads to the unified description both the prefocal and the postfocal systems. The class of surfaces in the ZEMAX optical program has been properly extended to ascertain the image quality in exact Schwarzschild aplanats. A comparison of Schwarzschild aplanats with approximate Ritchey-Chretien and Gregory-Maksutov aplanatic telescopes reveals a noticeable advantage of the former at fast focal ratio of the system.Comment: 19 page

    Detecting wildlife in unmanned aerial systems imagery using convolutional neural networks trained with an automated feedback loop

    Using automated processes to detect wildlife in uncontrolled outdoor imagery in the field of wildlife ecology is a challenging task. This is especially true in imagery provided by an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), where the relative size of wildlife is small and visually similar to its background. This work presents an automated feedback loop which can be used to train convolutional neural networks with extremely unbalanced class sizes, which alleviates some of these challenges. This work utilizes UAS imagery collected by the Wildlife@Home project, which has employed citizen scientists and trained experts to go through collected UAS imagery and classify it. Classified data is used as inputs to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) which seek to automatically mark which areas of the imagery contain wildlife. The output of the CNN is then passed to a blob counter which returns a population estimate for the image. The feedback loop was developed to help train the CNNs to better differentiate between the wildlife and the visually similar background and deal with the disparate amount of wildlife training images versus background training images. Utilizing the feedback loop dramatically reduced population count error rates from previously published work, from +150% to −3.93% on citizen scientist data and +88% to +5.24% on expert data

    Effects of sildenafil on maximum walking time in patients with arterial claudication: The ARTERIOFIL study

    BACKGROUND: Patients with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) frequently experience claudication, a clinical symptom indicative of reduced walking capacity. Recommended care consists of exercise rehabilitation combined with optimal medical treatment and surgery. The effects of a single oral dose of sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitor, on patients with claudication are discussed. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of a single 100 mg dose of sildenafil compared to placebo in terms of maximal walking time (MWT) in patients with claudication. METHODS: The ARTERIOFIL study is a crossover, double-blind, prospective, randomized, single-center study conducted at Angers University Hospital in France. MWT (primary endpoint) was assessed using a treadmill test (10% incline; 3.2 km/h). Secondary endpoints (pain-free walking time (PFWT), transcutaneous oximetry during exercise and redox cycle parameters and safety) were also studied. RESULTS: Fourteen patients were included of whom two were ultimately excluded. In the 12 remaining patients, the MWT was significantly improved during the sildenafil period compared with the placebo period (300 s [95% CI 172 s-428 s] vs 402 s [95% CI 274 s-529 s] p < 0.01). Sildenafil had no significant effect on pain-free walking time or skin tissue oxygenation during exercise. According to redox cycle parameters, sildenafil significantly reduced blood glucose and pyruvate levels and the 3-hydroxybutyrate/acetoacetate ratio, while there was no significant effect on lactate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and free fatty acid levels. Symptomatic transient hypotension was observed in two women. CONCLUSIONS: The ARTERIOFIL study has shown that a single 100 mg oral dose of sildenafil had a significant effect on increase in MWT but had no significant effects on PFWT and oxygenation parameters in patients with claudication. A double-blind, prospective, randomized, multicenter study (VIRTUOSE©) is ongoing to evaluate the chronic effect of six month-long sildenafil treatment on MWT in PAD patients with claudication.     Changes in CRH and ACTH Synthesis during Experimental and Human Septic Shock

    Context The mechanisms of septic shock-associated adrenal insufficiency remain unclear. This study aimed at investigating the synthesis of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and vasopressin (AVP) by parvocellular neurons and the antehypophyseal expression of ACTH in human septic shock and in an experimental model of sepsis. Objective To test the hypothesis that ACTH secretion is decreased secondarily to alteration of CRH or AVP synthesis, we undertook a neuropathological study of the antehypophyseal system in patients who had died from septic shock and rats with experimental faecal peritonitis. Methods Brains obtained in 9 septic shock patients were compared to 10 nonseptic patients (controls). Parvocellular expression of AVP and CRH mRNA were evaluated by in situ hybridization. Antehypophyseal expression of ACTH, vasopressin V1b and CRH R1 receptors and parvocellular expression of iNOS in the PVN were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The same experiments were carried out in a fecal peritonitis-induced model of sepsis. Data from septic rats with (n = 6) or without (n = 10) early death were compared to sham-operated (n = 8) animals. Results In patients and rats, septic shock was associated with a decreased expression of ACTH, unchanged expression of V1B receptor, CRHR1 and AVP mRNA, and increased expression of parvocellular iNOS compared to controls. Septic shock was also characterized by an increased expression of CRH mRNA in rats but not in patients, who notably had a greater duration of septic shock. Conclusion The present study suggests that in humans and in rats, septic shock is associated with decreased ACTH synthesis that is not compensated by its two natural secretagogues, AVP and CRH. One underlying mechanism might be increased expression of iNOS in hypothalamic parvocellular neurons

    Memristive and neuromorphic behavior in a Li x CoO 2 nanobattery

    International audienceThe phenomenon of resistive switching (RS), which was initially linked to non-volatile resistive memory applications, has recently also been associated with the concept of memristors, whose adjustable multilevel resistance characteristics open up unforeseen perspectives in cognitive computing. Herein, we demonstrate that the resistance states of Li(x)CoO2 thin film-based metal-insulator-metal (MIM) solid-state cells can be tuned by sequential programming voltage pulses, and that these resistance states are dramatically dependent on the pulses input rate, hence emulating biological synapse plasticity. In addition, we identify the underlying electrochemical processes of RS in our MIM cells, which also reveal a nanobattery-like behavior, leading to the generation of electrical signals that bring an unprecedented new dimension to the connection between memristors and neuromorphic systems. Therefore, these LixCoO2-based MIM devices allow for a combination of possibilities, offering new perspectives of usage in nanoelectronics and bio-inspired neuromorphic circuits

    The formation energies of nanostructures play an important role in determining their properties, including the catalytic activity. For the case of 15 different rutile and 8 different perovskite metal oxides, we find that the density functional theory (DFT) calculated formation energies of (2,2) nanorods, (3,3) nanotubes, and the (110) and (100) surfaces may be described semi-quantitatively by the fraction of metal--oxygen bonds broken and the bonding band centers in the bulk metal oxide
