    In silico evaluation of therapeutic potentials of Syringic acid against some selected diseases

    In the past few years several developments in medications have been made for the better treatment of certain diseases like Breast Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Tuberculosis, Obesity and Malaria. Phytochemicals possessing various medicinal properties have opened up the door to discover or design novel drug against these diseases. Syringic acid is such a natural compound found in many plants with a vast range of therapeutic potentials against several diseases. The present study aims to reveal Syringic acid as a potent inhibitor against Breast Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Tuberculosis, Obesity and Malaria comparing to the standard drugs of each disease. Molecular docking of syringic acid with critical proteins associated with the diseases was done using Schrödinger Maestro (v11.1). QikProp module of Schrödinger Maestro was used for ADME prediction and the toxicity of the ligand was evaluated by ProTox online databases. Syringic acid was found to exhibit acceptable ADME properties with no carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Molecular docking result also showed higher scores compared to the commercially available standard drugs against four out of five diseases. The best docking scores were found against Breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Obesity and Malaria which are -6.801 kcal/mol, -5.285 kcal/mol, -5.491 kcal/mol and -4.141 kcal/mol respectively. Syringic acid can be a stronger inhibitory potential agent against selected diseases than the standard drugs. Further clinical studies are required to consider syringic acid as an effective candidate drug for the better treatment of the mentioned diseases

    Evaluation of anti-moisture effect of HPMC, Kollidon CL and Aerosil - 200 in hydrolysis affinity Clopidogrel-Aspirin tablet using Delta T Moister Sensor

    The combined therapeutic effect of aspirin and clopidogrel is more potent than single one. This combined formulation is not stable due to their moisture affinity toward the hydrolysis reaction. The presence of moisture is a crucial factor in any formulation and causes sticking, picking, microbial growth, stability issues, lamination, friability. This combination formulation was designed using hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose 15 cps, Kollidon CL and Aerosil 200 in a controlled clean room class-I to stop the hydrolysis reaction. The tablets were made using slug method and hardness, disintegration, friability, dissolution, drug content, water activity, moisture content was determined. Kollidon CL and Aerosil 200 showed greater moisture reduction rate than HPMC 15 cps. The better anti-moisture effect of the excipient of Kollidon CL and Aerosil 200 was assured by the calculation of water activity using delta T sensor and isotherm, hysteresis. The quantity of excipients in the tablets was demonstrated for the significant affinity to moisture. The investigated simulated amount of Kollidon CL and Aerosil 200 showed the effective lower water activity in the delta T sensor. The mean moisture specification range was considered as 0.5-4.0% while the kollidon CL and Aerosol 200 showed moisture content of 1.32% and water activity (aw)of 0.014. In this study the Delta T sensor is used due to its significant reduction of dead time from 30% to 45% and moisture variation reduced at least 30% than other models treatment

    Macrophage-Dependent Interleukin-6-Production and Inhibition of I-K Contributes to Acquired QT Prolongation in Lipotoxic Guinea Pig Heart

    [EN] In the heart, the delayed rectifier K current, I-K, composed of the rapid (I-Kr) and slow (I-Ks) components contributes prominently to normal cardiac repolarization. In lipotoxicity, chronic elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines may remodel I-K, elevating the risk for ventricular arrythmias and sudden cardiac death. We investigated whether and how the pro-inflammatory interleukin-6 altered I-K in the heart, using electrophysiology to evaluate changes in I-K in adult guinea pig ventricular myocytes. We found that palmitic acid (a potent inducer of lipotoxicity), induced a rapid (~24 h) and significant increase in IL-6 in RAW264.7 cells. PA-diet fed guinea pigs displayed a severely prolonged QT interval when compared to low-fat diet fed controls. Exposure to isoproterenol induced torsade de pointes, and ventricular fibrillation in lipotoxic guinea pigs. Pre-exposure to IL-6 with the soluble IL-6 receptor produced a profound depression of I-Kr and I-Ks densities, prolonged action potential duration, and impaired mitochondrial ATP production. Only with the inhibition of I-Kr did a proarrhythmic phenotype of I-Ks depression emerge, manifested as a further prolongation of action potential duration and QT interval.     CSR in major European football leagues in the age of COVID-19: financial vulnerability, mental health and domestic violence

    Purpose COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the lives of people and businesses around the world in different ways. France, Spain, Italy and the UK are among the worst affected countries by this pandemic. The purpose of this paper is to identify and compare different corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities taken by the clubs and player of the major football leagues of these four countries to develop a more comprehensive model of intervention. Design/methodology/approach This paper has analyzed the initiatives taken by these football clubs and players to address financial vulnerabilities, mental health problems and domestic violence among the stakeholders and compared them with the existing CSR and humanitarian models. A case study approach has been used to collect and analyze data related to the CSR activities taken by the players and club management. Official websites of the clubs, newspaper and journal articles were among the major sources used to collect data for the paper. Findings Football clubs and players of the four major leagues have raised funds through different campaigns and delivered foods and essential medical supplies to the communities and hospitals to address financial vulnerabilities, mental health issues and domestic violence within their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have provided guidance to their followers using social and television media to improve their physical and mental health during the pandemic. Online competitions, quizzes or virtual hangouts have also been used by the players to engage the stakeholders on a frequent basis. Football clubs have also initiated campaigns to raise awareness within the community on available medical services for the victims of domestic violence and also provided them with shelter, food, medical, legal and online counseling services. Originality/value Football clubs and players of the major leagues were always at the forefront to help the communities and hospitals to address issues related to mental health problems, financial vulnerabilities and domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of this paper could help and guide other entities in designing a more comprehensive model of CSR interventions during pandemics or crisis situations to address financial vulnerabilities, mental health problems and domestic violence within their communities.©2022 Emerald Publishing Limited.     A Case Study of Six Sigma Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) Methodology in Garment Sector

    This paper demonstrates the empirical application of Six Sigma and Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) methodology to reduce product defects within a garments manufacturing organization in Bangladesh which follows the DMAIC methodology to investigate defects, root causes and provide a solution to eliminate these defects. The analysis from employing Six Sigma and DMAIC indicated that the broken stitch and open seam influenced the number of defective products. Design of experiments (DOE) and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were combined to statistically determine the correlation of the broken stitch and open seam with defects as well as to define their optimum values needed to eliminate the defects. Thus, a reduction of about 35% in the garments defect was achieved, which helped the organization studied to reduce its defects and thus improve its Sigma level from 1.7 to 3.4

    STUDY OF PROBIOTICS ON THE SEED PRODUCTION OF BLACK TIGER SHRIMP Penaeus monodon

    Currently, antibiotics are widely used in shrimp hatcheries to control bacterial infections. Appearance of antibiotic resistant pathogens and restriction on the use of antibiotics have led to the development of alternatives to antibiotics in hatchery systems. In light of this, an attempt was undertaken to investigate the effects of probiotics on the larval rearing of Penaeus monodon, compared with control tanks (without probiotics). The results showed that several issues significantly improved with administering probiotics in the experimental tanks compared with the tanks without probiotics. For example, the concentration of ammonia was estimated to be 1.25 mg/L that was less than half of what was measured in the control tanks. The size variation was observed more in the control tanks than in the experimental tanks. Moreover, the muscle gut ratio of PL15 was about 85 to 92% in the probiotic treated tank and 70 to 80% in the control tank during the eight cycles of production. The fouling organisms were more in the control tank compared to the experimental tanks. The average length of PL15 was maximum when reared in the experimental tanks compared to the control tanks. The final survival rate of PL15 from the control and experimental tank was 35 and 52%, respectively. The present investigation indicated that probiotics played an important role in the growth, survival and health status of P. monodon larvae

    Frequency of consanguineous marriage among the thalassaemia major patients in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University

    Thalassaemia is a commonly occurring hereditary disorder. There is a high prevalence of thalassaemia disease in South-East Asia as well as Bangladesh. It is an autosomal recessive disorder, so consanguineous marriage is a very important factor for this disease. Mutated beta globin gene of haemoglobin from both parents is responsible for this disease to occur. But when the number of thalassaemia carriers is miserably high, then only avoidance of consanguineous marriage can’t prevent the birth of children with thalassaemia major. So, this cross sectional study was conducted among 120 diagnosed (by haemoglobin electrophoresis or high performance liquid chromatography) thalassaemia major patients in the Department of Haematology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka from July 2019 to May 2020. History from each patient was taken and blood samples were collected from their parents to confirm carrier state by haemoglobin electrophoresis. Blood samples were also collected from patients and their parents toperform complete blood count and peripheral Blood Film. This study showed the mean age of the participants was 15±9.34 and 73 (60.8%) patients were male and 47 (39.2%) were female. About, 71% of the study population lived in urban area, 81 (67%) patients were transfusion dependent thalassaemia patients. 15% thalas- saemia major patients had the history of consanguinity of their parents. Among the parents of the thalassaemia major patients, 62.5% were Beta thalassaemia trait (heterozygous state), 25.83% parents were Hb E trait ( heterozygous state), 7.08% parents were suffering from Beta Thalassaemia Major(homozygous state) and 11 (4.58%) parents were suffering from Hb E/Beta Thalassaemia which is a compound heterozygous state. Though consanguinity is a very influential factor, but the most important causative factor is the presence of high number of thalassaemia carrier in the population. So, it’s a burning issue for the nation to perform a routine carrier screening for all rather than focusing on consanguinity only, to lessen the burden of thalassaemia disease in Bangladesh.     Soybean and Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security

    Global food security is under-challenged due to over increasing human population, limited cropland, and risk of climate change. Therefore, an appropriate agricultural policy framework needs to be developed for food security that should be sustainable economically and ecologically. Nitrogen (N) is a crucial element that controls the growth productivity of crop plants. N accounts for around 78 volume per cent of the atmosphere but all crop plants cannot use it directly. Agricultural land is mostly dominated by cereals (e.g. rice, wheat, maize) which have specifically high N demand as compared to food legumes. Soybean exemplifies the most significant and cultivated food legume, presently cultivated worldwide under varying climatic conditions. It plays a significant role in global food security as well as agricultural sustainability due to a high seed protein and oil concentration, and low reliance on N fertilization. Soybean enriches soil health by fixing atmospheric N through biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), the most productive and economical system for N fixation and crop production, associated with more intensive production systems. However, the efficiency of BNF depends on several factors. This study is focused to develop more reliable guidelines for managing BNF by using the potential of natural agro-ecosystems

    The impact of the introduction of index options on volatility and liquidity on the underlying stocks : Empirical evidence from the Asian stock markets

    The impact of the introduction of derivatives on the underlying stock is a debatable topic among the researchers. The issue is quite controversial as contradictory results have been obtained by researchers in various stock markets. The purpose of this study is to examine the volatility and the liquidity effect on the underlying stock after the introduction of index options. We have investigated volatility and liquidity effect by collecting sample data from the stock markets of India, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, only markets which are offering index options in Asia.   Applying the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model, we have examined the conditional volatility of intraday (high frequency) returns for each stock market, before and after the introduction of index options. We have also examined the liquidity effect through t-test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. We used t-test to determine the mean differences between the trading volume of pre-index and post-index options periods.    By comparing the estimated parameters and the coefficient of conditional volatility in pre and post period of index options introductions, we have examined that the derivatives trading dramatically increases the persistence of the conditional volatility for all the selected stock markets. We also observed mixed evidence in context to liquidity effect. In the stock exchanges of Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, we found that the respective markets become more liquid in the post index options periods in contrast to pre index options period. In these markets trading volume increased significantly after the introduction of index options.  On the other hand, India, Malaysia and Singapore stock markets show no liquidity effect in the post-index option period.   Finally, the empirical results of our study conclude that the introduction of index options on the selected Asian stock markets have increased in stock return volatility and liquidity on the underlying stocks
