Emotional agents at the square lattice
We introduce and investigate by numerical simulations a number of models of
emotional agents at the square lattice. Our models describe the most general
features of emotions such as the spontaneous emotional arousal, emotional
relaxation, and transfers of emotions between different agents. Group emotions
in the considered models are periodically fluctuating between two opposite
valency levels and as result the mean value of such group emotions is zero. The
oscillations amplitude depends strongly on probability ps of the individual
spontaneous arousal. For small values of relaxation times tau we observed a
stochastic resonance, i.e. the signal to noise ratio SNR is maximal for a
non-zero ps parameter. The amplitude increases with the probability p of local
affective interactions while the mean oscillations period increases with the
relaxation time tau and is only weakly dependent on other system parameters.
Presence of emotional antenna can enhance positive or negative emotions and for
the optimal transition probability the antenna can change agents emotions at
longer distances. The stochastic resonance was also observed for the influence

Flow of emotional messages in artificial social networks
Models of message flows in an artificial group of users communicating via the
Internet are introduced and investigated using numerical simulations. We
assumed that messages possess an emotional character with a positive valence
and that the willingness to send the next affective message to a given person
increases with the number of messages received from this person. As a result,
the weights of links between group members evolve over time. Memory effects are
introduced, taking into account that the preferential selection of message
receivers depends on the communication intensity during the recent period only.
We also model the phenomenon of secondary social sharing when the reception of
an emotional e-mail triggers the distribution of several emotional e-mails to

Negative emotions boost users activity at BBC Forum
We present an empirical study of user activity in online BBC discussion
forums, measured by the number of posts written by individual debaters and the
average sentiment of these posts. Nearly 2.5 million posts from over 18
thousand users were investigated. Scale free distributions were observed for
activity in individual discussion threads as well as for overall activity. The
number of unique users in a thread normalized by the thread length decays with
thread length, suggesting that thread life is sustained by mutual discussions
rather than by independent comments. Automatic sentiment analysis shows that
most posts contain negative emotions and the most active users in individual
threads express predominantly negative sentiments. It follows that the average
emotion of longer threads is more negative and that threads can be sustained by
negative comments. An agent based computer simulation model has been used to
reproduce several essential characteristics of the analyzed system. The model
stresses the role of discussions between users, especially emotionally laden
quarrels between supporters of opposite opinions, and represents many observed

Paraphrasing in respeaking – comparing linguistic competence of interpreters, translators and bilinguals
Respeaking is a method of producing subtitling for live events and TV programmes. Respeakers repeat speakers’ utterances so that they may be changed by speech recognition software into subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Respeakers need to paraphrase the text so that it conforms with temporal and spatial constraints of subtitling. Due to the similarities between respeaking, interpreting and translation, we tested interpreters, translators and bilingual controls on a paraphrasing task to see whether interpreters or translators would manifest any advantage thanks to experience. Following respeaking training, the participants were asked to paraphrase sentences with semantic redundancies, oral discourse markers and false starts in a simultaneous and delayed condition. Contrary to our predictions, we found that experience did not modulate paraphrasing quality or speed in general, but interpreters did outperform other groups when eliminating semantic redundancies, which were also the most difficult reformulations to tackle for all participants. The data suggest that while interpreters and translators are not better predisposed to become respeakers than regular bilinguals, at least as regards the paraphrasing performance, certain aspects of the interpreting experience (the need to express meaning concisely within time constraints) may offer a slight advantage in producing well-formed respoken subtitles
Quantifying layer similarity in multiplex networks: A systematic study

We provide a taxonomy and experimental evaluation of approaches to compare layers in multiplex networks. Our taxonomy includes, systematizes and extends existing approaches, and is complemented by a set of practical guidelines on how to apply them
Electrical switching of magnetic polarity in a multiferroic BiFeO3 device at room temperature
We have directly imaged reversible electrical switching of the cycloidal
rotation direction (magnetic polarity) in a (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial-film device
at room temperature by non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering. Consistent with
previous reports, fully relaxed (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial films consisting of a
single ferroelectric domain were found to comprise a sub-micron-scale mosaic of
magneto-elastic domains, all sharing a common direction of the magnetic
polarity, which was found to switch reversibly upon reversal of the
ferroelectric polarization without any measurable change of the magneto-elastic
domain population. A real-space polarimetry map of our device clearly
distinguished between regions of the sample electrically addressed into the two
magnetic states with a resolution of a few tens of micron. Contrary to the
general belief that the magneto-electric coupling in BiFeO3 is weak, we find
that electrical switching has a dramatic effect on the magnetic structure, with
the magnetic moments rotating on average by 90 degrees at every cycle.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; corrected figure
Networks of companies and branches in Poland
In this study we consider relations between companies in Poland taking into
account common branches they belong to. It is clear that companies belonging to
the same branch compete for similar customers, so the market induces
correlations between them. On the other hand two branches can be related by
companies acting in both of them. To remove weak, accidental links we shall use
a concept of threshold filtering for weighted networks where a link weight
corresponds to a number of existing connections (common companies or branches)

Scaling of human behavior during portal browsing
We investigate transitions of portals users between different subpages. A
weighted network of portals subpages is reconstructed where edge weights are
numbers of corresponding transitions. Distributions of link weights and node
strengths follow power laws over several decades. Node strength increases
faster than linearly with node degree. The distribution of time spent by the
user at one subpage decays as power law with exponent around 1.3. Distribution
of numbers P(z) of unique subpages during one visit is exponential. We find a
square root dependence between the average z and the total number of
transitions n during a single visit. Individual path of portal user resembles
of self-attracting walk on the weighted network. Analytical model is developed

A homology model of restriction endonuclease SfiI in complex with DNA
BACKGROUND: Restriction enzymes (REases) are commercial reagents commonly used in recombinant DNA technologies. They are attractive models for studying protein-DNA interactions and valuable targets for protein engineering. They are, however, extremely divergent: the amino acid sequence of a typical REase usually shows no detectable similarities to any other proteins, with rare exceptions of other REases that recognize identical or very similar sequences. From structural analyses and bioinformatics studies it has been learned that some REases belong to at least four unrelated and structurally distinct superfamilies of nucleases, PD-DxK, PLD, HNH, and GIY-YIG. Hence, they are extremely hard targets for structure prediction and homology-based inference of sequence-function relationships and the great majority of REases remain structurally and evolutionarily unclassified. RESULTS: SfiI is a REase which recognizes the interrupted palindromic sequence 5'GGCCNNNN^NGGCC3' and generates 3 nt long 3' overhangs upon cleavage. SfiI is an archetypal Type IIF enzyme, which functions as a tetramer and cleaves two copies of the recognition site in a concerted manner. Its sequence shows no similarity to other proteins and nothing is known about the localization of its active site or residues important for oligomerization. Using the threading approach for protein fold-recognition, we identified a remote relationship between SfiI and BglI, a dimeric Type IIP restriction enzyme from the PD-DxK superfamily of nucleases, which recognizes the 5'GCCNNNN^NGGC3' sequence and whose structure in complex with the substrate DNA is available. We constructed a homology model of SfiI in complex with its target sequence and used it to predict residues important for dimerization, tetramerization, DNA binding and catalysis. CONCLUSIONS: The bioinformatics analysis suggest that SfiI, a Type IIF enzyme, is more closely related to BglI, an "orthodox" Type IIP restriction enzyme, than to any other REase, including other Type IIF REases with known structures, such as NgoMIV. NgoMIV and BglI belong to two different, very remotely related branches of the PD-DxK superfamily: the α-class (EcoRI-like), and the β-class (EcoRV-like), respectively. Thus, our analysis provides evidence that the ability to tetramerize and cut the two DNA sequences in a concerted manner was developed independently at least two times in the evolution of the PD-DxK superfamily of REases. The model of SfiI will also serve as a convenient platform for further experimental analyses
Collective emotions online and their influence on community life
E-communities, social groups interacting online, have recently become an
object of interdisciplinary research. As with face-to-face meetings, Internet
exchanges may not only include factual information but also emotional
information - how participants feel about the subject discussed or other group
members. Emotions are known to be important in affecting interaction partners
in offline communication in many ways. Could emotions in Internet exchanges
affect others and systematically influence quantitative and qualitative aspects
of the trajectory of e-communities? The development of automatic sentiment
analysis has made large scale emotion detection and analysis possible using
text messages collected from the web. It is not clear if emotions in
e-communities primarily derive from individual group members' personalities or
if they result from intra-group interactions, and whether they influence group
activities. We show the collective character of affective phenomena on a large
scale as observed in 4 million posts downloaded from Blogs, Digg and BBC
forums. To test whether the emotions of a community member may influence the
emotions of others, posts were grouped into clusters of messages with similar
emotional valences. The frequency of long clusters was much higher than it
would be if emotions occurred at random. Distributions for cluster lengths can
be explained by preferential processes because conditional probabilities for
consecutive messages grow as a power law with cluster length. For BBC forum
threads, average discussion lengths were higher for larger values of absolute
average emotional valence in the first ten comments and the average amount of
emotion in messages fell during discussions. Our results prove that collective
emotional states can be created and modulated via Internet communication and
