“A plea for a renaissance”:Dorothy Todd’s Modernist experiment in British Vogue, 1922 -1926
This is not a fashion paper: Modernism, Dorothy Todd and British Vogue "Style is thinking."
In 1922, six years after its initial inception in England, Vogue magazine began to be edited by Dorothy Todd. Her spell in charge of the already renowned magazine, which had begun its life in America in 1892, lasted until only 1926. These years represent somewhat of an anomaly in the flawless history of the world's most famous fashion magazine, and study of the editions from this era reveal a Vogue that few would expect. Dorothy Todd, the most enigmatic and undocumented figure in the history of the magazine and, arguably within the sphere of popular publications in general, used Vogue as the vehicle through which to promote the innovative forms in art and literature that were emerging at the beginning of the twentieth century. Through her inclusion of artists and writers whom we would now consider to be the influential makers of modernism, Todd turned Vogue into an advanced literary and social review and thus a magazine of modernism. Preconceptions which regard Vogue as a mere mass circulated fashion glossy need necessarily be dismissed before reading this work, as the Vogue of 1922-1926 presented the fashions of the body alongside the “fashions of the mind"2 This research will demonstrate both the extent of Vogue's transformation into a modernist magazine and to seek to locate the lost editor of Dorothy Todd. Such a meticulous project has never yet to be undertaken. Dorothy Todd's Vogue can be no longer dismissed as mere frivolity in the frenzied and tumultuous intellectual climate of the inter-war period
Society-based solutions to coral reef threats in french pacific territories
This article reviews the state of coral reefs in French Pacific territories in the context of global change (especially threats linked to climate change). We first outline the specific local characteristics, vulnerabilities, and threats faced by the coral reefs of New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna. We also emphasize local and other human communities' economic and cultural reliance on coral reefs. Secondly, we discuss the natural and anthropogenic threats facing coral reefs in French Pacific territories, and current ecological responses such as mitigation and adaptation strategies. We conclude by proposing socio-economic solutions for the Pacific region across varying scales, with a special focus on enforcement measures and socio-political issues
Heat transfer in a swirling fluidized bed with Geldart type-D particles
A relatively new variant in fluidized bed technology, designated as the swirling fluidized bed (SFB), was investigated for its heat transfer characteristics when operating with Geldart type D particles. Unlike conventional fluidized beds, the SFB imparts secondary swirling motion to the bed to enhance lateral mixing. Despite its excellent hydrodynamics, its heat transfer characteristics have not been reported in the published literature. Hence, two different sizes of spherical PVC particles (2.61mm and 3.65mm) with the presence of a center body in the bed have been studied at different velocities of the fluidizing gas. The wall-to-bed heat transfer coefficients were measured by affixing a thin constant foil heater on the bed wall. Thermocouples located at different heights on the foil show a decrease in the wall heat transfer coefficient with bed height. It was seen that only a discrete particle model which accounts for the conduction between the particle and the heat transfer surface and the gas-convective augmentation can adequately represent the mechanism of heat transfer in the swirling fluidized bed

The conjunction of major environmental and socio-political changes that we are currently experiencing invites us to question our past. Archaeology at the National Museum of Natural History in France has been tackling this question since 2019 through a thematic workshop that we present here

Les savoirs - outils de distinction et de légitimation dans le cadre d’une gestion durable : le cas des pêcheurs à pied d’ormeaux
Leisure activities in maritime environment can affect biological varieties. The gathering-up of shellfish (ear-fish) is a widespread practice by the Atlantic Channel seashore ant it is therefore carefully watched by the persons in charge of the different natural areas. The observations and interviews carried out in the nature reserve of the islands “Sept-îles” (Fce) unable us to describe and analyse these social practices. Indeed they can’t solely be considered as noxious gathering-up activities. They also constitute a way to appropriate a cultural knowledge (know-how, behaviour…) and therefore take part in the construction of individual and collective identities. Knowledge and know-how are two basics elements used by the fishermen (who collect ear-fish) in order to make a distinction between a “tourist” and a fisherman. Then, manners and the rules of behaviour are used to separate fishermen with traditional methods from those whose methods have devastating effects. These categorizations unable us to understand the varieties of one practice which cannot be grasped if we used sociological critera (gender, age, address, job). And yet an acute analyse of the differences between the practices and those who practice is necessary to understand what is at stake when managing decision are taken for these areas. In a concerted management the rightful practices claimed by the actors can only derive from these distinctions
