Global Incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer and their correlation with socioeconomic indicators temporal patterns and trends in 41 countries
Oesophageal cancers (adenocarcinomas [AC] and squamous cell carcinomas [SCC]) are characterized by high incidence/mortality in many countries. We aimed to delineate its global incidence and mortality, and studied whether socioeconomic development and its incidence rate were correlated. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence and mortality of this medical condition in 2012 for 184 nations from the GLOBOCAN database; national databases capturing incidence rates, and the WHO mortality database were examined. Their correlations with two indicators of socioeconomic development were evaluated. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to generate trends. The ratio between the ASR of AC and SCC was strongly correlated with HDI (r = 0.535 [men]; r = 0.661 [women]) and GDP (r = 0.594 [men]; r = 0.550 [women], both p < 0.001). Countries that reported the largest reduction in incidence in male included Poland (Average Annual Percent Change [AAPC] = −7.1, 95%C.I. = −12,−1.9) and Singapore (AAPC = −5.8, 95%C.I. = −9.5,−1.9), whereas for women the greatest decline was seen in Singapore (AAPC = −12.3, 95%C.I. = −17.3,−6.9) and China (AAPC = −5.6, 95%C.I. = −7.6,−3.4). The Philippines (AAPC = 4.3, 95%C.I. = 2,6.6) and Bulgaria (AAPC = 2.8, 95%C.I. = 0.5,5.1) had a significant mortality increase in men; whilst Columbia (AAPC = −6.1, 95%C.I. = −7.5,−4.6) and Slovenia (AAPC = −4.6, 95%C.I. = −7.9,−1.3) reported mortality decline in women. These findings inform individuals at increased risk for primary prevention
Ginkgo biloba extract attenuates oxLDL-induced oxidative functional damages in endothelial cells
Ou HC, Lee WJ, Lee IT, Chiu TH, Tsai KL, Lin CY, Sheu WH. Ginkgo biloba extract attenuates oxLDL-induced oxidative functional damages in endothelial cells. J Appl Physiol 106: 1674-1685, 2009. First published February 19, 2009; doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.91415.2008.-Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process with increased oxidative stress in vascular endothelium. Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE), extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves, has commonly been used as a therapeutic agent for cardiovascular and neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate how GbE protects vascular endothelial cells against the proatherosclerotic stressor oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) in vitro. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were incubated with GbE (12.5-100 mu g/ml) for 2 h and then incubated with oxLDL (150 mu g/ml) for an additional 24 h. Subsequently, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, antioxidant enzyme activities, adhesion to monocytes, cell morphology, viability, and several apoptotic indexes were assessed. Our data show that ROS generation is an upstream signal in oxLDL-treated HUVECs. Cu,Zn-SOD, but not Mn-SOD, was inactivated by oxLDL. In addition, oxLDL diminished expression of endothelial NO synthase and enhanced expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM, VCAM, and E-selectin) and the adherence of monocytic THP-1 cells to HUVECs. Furthermore, oxLDL increased intracellular calcium, disturbed the balance of Bcl-2 family proteins, destabilized mitochondrial membrane potential, and triggered subsequent cytochrome c release into the cytosol and activation of caspase-3. These detrimental effects were ameliorated dose dependently by GbE (P < 0.05). Results from this study may provide insight into a possible molecular mechanism underlying GbE suppression of the oxLDL-mediated vascular endothelial dysfunction
Identifying diachronic topic-based research communities by clustering shared research trajectories
Communities of academic authors are usually identified by means of standard community detection algorithms, which exploit ‘static’ relations, such as co-authorship or citation networks. In contrast with these approaches, here we focus on diachronic topic-based communities –i.e., communities of people who appear to work on semantically related topics at the same time. These communities are interesting because their analysis allows us to make sense of the dynamics of the research world –e.g., migration of researchers from one topic to another, new communities being spawn by older ones, communities splitting, merging, ceasing to exist, etc. To this purpose, we are interested in developing clustering methods that are able to handle correctly the dynamic aspects of topic-based community formation, prioritizing the relationship between researchers who appear to follow the same research trajectories. We thus present a novel approach called Temporal Semantic Topic-Based Clustering (TST), which exploits a novel metric for clustering researchers according to their research trajectories, defined as distributions of semantic topics over time. The approach has been evaluated through an empirical study involving 25 experts from the Semantic Web and Human-Computer Interaction areas. The evaluation shows that TST exhibits a performance comparable to the one achieved by human experts
Automated Coronal Hole Detection using Local Intensity Thresholding Techniques
We identify coronal holes using a histogram-based intensity thresholding
technique and compare their properties to fast solar wind streams at three
different points in the heliosphere. The thresholding technique was tested on
EUV and X-ray images obtained using instruments onboard STEREO, SOHO and
Hinode. The full-disk images were transformed into Lambert equal-area
projection maps and partitioned into a series of overlapping sub-images from
which local histograms were extracted. The histograms were used to determine
the threshold for the low intensity regions, which were then classified as
coronal holes or filaments using magnetograms from the SOHO/MDI. For all three
instruments, the local thresholding algorithm was found to successfully
determine coronal hole boundaries in a consistent manner. Coronal hole
properties extracted using the segmentation algorithm were then compared with
in situ measurements of the solar wind at 1 AU from ACE and STEREO. Our results
indicate that flux tubes rooted in coronal holes expand super-radially within 1
AU and that larger (smaller) coronal holes result in longer (shorter) duration
high-speed solar wind streams
Determining the upper limit of Gamma_{ee} for the Y(4260)
By fitting the R values between 3.7 and 5.0 GeV measured by the BES
collaboration, the upper limit of the electron width of the newly discovered
resonance Y(4260) is determined to be 580 eV at 90% C.L. Together with the
BABAR measurement on the product of Gamma_{ee} and BR(Y(4260) --> pi+pi-
J/psi), this implies a large decay width of Y(4260) --> pi+pi- J/psi final
states.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
A hybrid semantic approach to building dynamic maps of research communities
In the last ten years, ontology-based recommender systems have been shown to be effective tools for predicting user preferences and suggesting items. There are however some issues associated with the ontologies adopted by these approaches, such as: 1) their crafting is not a cheap process, being time consuming and calling for specialist expertise; 2) they may not represent accurately the viewpoint of the targeted user community; 3) they tend to provide rather static models, which fail to keep track of evolving user perspectives. To address these issues, we propose Klink UM, an approach for extracting emergent semantics from user feedbacks, with the aim of tailoring the ontology to the users and improving the recommendations accuracy. Klink UM uses statistical and machine learning techniques for finding hierarchical and similarity relationships between keywords associated with rated items and can be used for: 1) building a conceptual taxonomy from scratch, 2) enriching and correcting an existing ontology, 3) providing a numerical estimate of the intensity of semantic relationships according to the users. The evaluation shows that Klink UM performs well with respect to handcrafted ontologies and can significantly increase the accuracy of suggestions in content-based recommender systems
Asia-Pacific working group consensus on non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding: An update 2018
Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding remains an important emergency condition, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. As endoscopic therapy is the 'gold standard' of management, treatment of these patients can be considered in three stages: pre-endoscopic treatment, endoscopic haemostasis and post-endoscopic management. Since publication of the Asia-Pacific consensus on non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) 7 years ago, there have been significant advancements in the clinical management of patients in all three stages. These include pre-endoscopy risk stratification scores, blood and platelet transfusion, use of proton pump inhibitors; during endoscopy new haemostasis techniques (haemostatic powder spray and over-the-scope clips); and post-endoscopy management by second-look endoscopy and medication strategies. Emerging techniques, including capsule endoscopy and Doppler endoscopic probe in assessing adequacy of endoscopic therapy, and the pre-emptive use of angiographic embolisation, are attracting new attention. An emerging problem is the increasing use of dual antiplatelet agents and direct oral anticoagulants in patients with cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases. Guidelines on the discontinuation and then resumption of these agents in patients presenting with NVUGIB are very much needed. The Asia-Pacific Working Group examined recent evidence and recommends practical management guidelines in this updated consensus statement
Precise Measurements of Beam Spin Asymmetries in Semi-Inclusive production
We present studies of single-spin asymmetries for neutral pion
electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 5.776 GeV
polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target, using the CEBAF Large
Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator
Facility. A substantial amplitude has been measured in the
distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal
angle of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude
on Bjorken and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with
significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model
calculations.Comment: to be submitted PL
