Visually quantifying single-qubit quantum memory
To store quantum information, quantum memory plays a central intermediate
ingredient in a network. The minimal criterion for a reliable quantum memory is
the maintenance of the entangled state, which can be described by the
non-entanglement-breaking (non-EB) channel. In this work, we show that all
single-qubit quantum memory can be quantified without trusting input state
generation. In other words, we provide a semi-device-independent approach to
quantify all single-qubit quantum memory. More specifically, we apply the
concept of the two-qubit quantum steering ellipsoids to a single-qubit quantum
channel and define the channel ellipsoids. An ellipsoid can be constructed by
visualizing finite output states within the Bloch sphere. Since the
Choi-Jamio{\l}kowski state of a channel can all be reconstructed from geometric
data of the channel ellipsoid, a reliable quantum memory can be detected.
Finally, we visually quantify the single-qubit quantum memory by observing the

Production of phytase by Mitsuokella jalaludinii in semi-solid state fermentation of agricultural by-products
Phytase activity and growth of anaerobic rumen bacterium, Mitsuokella jalaludinii were investigated by semi-solid
state fermentation. Carbon source (rice bran, yam and cassava), nitrogen sources (soya bean, offal meal, fish meal and
feather meal) and growth factors (hemin, L-cysteine hydrochloride and minerals) were evaluated in a one-factor-at-atime
approach. Rice bran and fish meal produced better growth and phytase enzyme activity. The removal of L-cysteine
hydrochloride and minerals significantly decreased (p<0.05) phytase activity from 1178.72 U to 446.99 U and 902.54
U, respectively. The response surface methods (RSM) was conducted to optimize the phytase production and the results
showed the combination of 7.7% of rice bran and 3.7% of fish meal in semi-solid state fermentation gave the highest
phytase activity. Maximum phytase production and optimum growth of bacteria were detected at 12 h incubation in both
MF medium (control) and agro-medium. In this agro-medium, M. jalaludinii produced 2.5 fold higher phytase activity
compared to MF medium
Effects of supplementing freeze-dried Mitsuokella jalaludinii phytase on the growth performance and gut microbial diversity of broiler chickens
Inclusion of phytase in animal feedstuff is a common practice to enhance nutrients availability. However, little is known about the effects of phytase supplementation on the microbial ecology of the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, freeze-dried Mitsuokella jalaludinii phytase (MJ) was evaluated in a feeding trial with broilers fed a low available phosphorus (aP) diet. A total of 180 male broiler chicks (day-old Cobb) were assigned into three dietary treatments: Control fed with 0.4% (w/w) of available phosphorus (aP); Group T1 fed low aP [0.2% (w/w)] supplemented with MJ; and T2 fed low aP and deactivated MJ. The source of readily available P, dicalcium phosphate (DCP), was removed from low aP diet, whereby additional limestone was provided to replace the amount of Ca normally found in DCP. For each treatment, 4 replicate pens were used, where each pen consisted of 15 animals. The animals' energy intake and caecal bacterial community were monitored weekly for up to 3 weeks. The apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent digestibility of dry matter (ADDM) of broilers fed with different diets were determined. In addition, the caecal microbial diversities of broilers were assessed using high-throughput next-generation sequencing targeting the V3-V4 region of bacterial 16S rRNA. The results showed that broilers fed with T1 diet have better feed conversion ratio (FCR) when compared to the Control (p < .05) and T2 diets (p < .05), demonstrating the efficiency of MJ as a supplement to low aP diet. Nevertheless, MJ did not significantly affect the microbial population and diversity in broilers' caeca, which mainly consists of members from Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. Regardless, significant variations in the caecal bacterial composition were observed over time, probably due to succession as the broilers aged. A statistical method for region-based meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in genetically diverse populations
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become the preferred experimental design in exploring the genetic etiology of complex human traits and diseases. Standard SNP-based meta-analytic approaches have been utilized to integrate the results from multiple experiments. This fundamentally assumes that the patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between the underlying causal variants and the directly genotyped SNPs are similar across the populations for the same SNPs to emerge with surrogate evidence of disease association. We introduce a novel strategy for assessing regional evidence of phenotypic association that explicitly incorporates the extent of LD in the region. This provides a natural framework for combining evidence from multi-ethnic studies of both dichotomous and quantitative traits that (i) accommodates different patterns of LD, (ii) integrates different genotyping platforms and (iii) allows for the presence of allelic heterogeneity between the populations. Our method can also be generalized to perform gene-based or pathway-based analyses. Applying this method on real GWAS data in type 2 diabetes (T2D) boosted the association evidence in regions well-established for T2D etiology in three diverse South-East Asian populations, as well as identified two novel gene regions and a biologically convincing pathway that are subsequently validated with data from the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium
Palladium nanoparticles supported on fluorine-doped tin oxide as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki coupling and 4-nitrophenol reduction
Immobilization of palladium nanoparticles onto the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) as support Pd/FTO, resulted in a highly active heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions and 4-nitrophenol reduction. The Pd/FTO catalyst has been synthesized by immobilization of palladium nanoparticles onto FTO via a simple impregnation method. ICP-MS analysis confirmed that there is 0.11 mmol/g of palladium was loaded successfully on FTO support. The crystallinity, morphologies, compositions and surface properties of Pd/FTO were fully characterized by various techniques. It was further examined for its catalytic activity and robustness in Suzuki coupling reaction with different aryl halides and solvents. The yields obtained from Suzuki coupling reactions were basically over 80%. The prepared catalyst was also tested on mild reaction such as reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). Pd/FTO catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity towards 4-NP reduction with a rate constant of 1.776 min(-1) and turnover frequency (TOF) value of 29.1 hr(-1). The findings revealed that Pd/FTO also maintained its high stability for five consecutive runs in Suzuki reactions and 4-NP reductions. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic activities by using a small amount of Pd/FTO for the Suzuki coupling reaction and 4-NP reduction

Transferability of Type 2 Diabetes Implicated Loci in Multi-Ethnic Cohorts from Southeast Asia
Recent large genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified multiple loci
which harbor genetic variants associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D),
many of which encode proteins not previously suspected to be involved in the
pathogenesis of T2D. Most GWAS for T2D have focused on populations of European
descent, and GWAS conducted in other populations with different ancestry offer a
unique opportunity to study the genetic architecture of T2D. We performed
genome-wide association scans for T2D in 3,955 Chinese (2,010 cases, 1,945
controls), 2,034 Malays (794 cases, 1,240 controls), and 2,146 Asian Indians
(977 cases, 1,169 controls). In addition to the search for novel variants
implicated in T2D, these multi-ethnic cohorts serve to assess the
transferability and relevance of the previous findings from European descent
populations in the three major ethnic populations of Asia, comprising half of
the world's population. Of the SNPs associated with T2D in previous GWAS,
only variants at CDKAL1 and
HHEX/IDE/KIF11 showed the strongest
association with T2D in the meta-analysis including all three ethnic groups.
However, consistent direction of effect was observed for many of the other SNPs
in our study and in those carried out in European populations. Close examination
of the associations at both the CDKAL1 and
HHEX/IDE/KIF11 loci provided some evidence of locus and
allelic heterogeneity in relation to the associations with T2D. We also detected
variation in linkage disequilibrium between populations for most of these loci
that have been previously identified. These factors, combined with limited
statistical power, may contribute to the failure to detect associations across
populations of diverse ethnicity. These findings highlight the value of
surveying across diverse racial/ethnic groups towards the fine-mapping efforts
for the casual variants and also of the search for variants, which may be
population-specific
Genome-Wide Meta-Analysis of Five Asian Cohorts Identifies PDGFRA as a Susceptibility Locus for Corneal Astigmatism
Corneal astigmatism refers to refractive abnormalities and irregularities in the curvature of the cornea, and this interferes with light being accurately focused at a single point in the eye. This ametropic condition is highly prevalent, influences visual acuity, and is a highly heritable trait. There is currently a paucity of research in the genetic etiology of corneal astigmatism. Here we report the results from five genome-wide association studies of corneal astigmatism across three Asian populations, with an initial discovery set of 4,254 Chinese and Malay individuals consisting of 2,249 cases and 2,005 controls. Replication was obtained from three surveys comprising of 2,139 Indians, an additional 929 Chinese children, and an independent 397 Chinese family trios. Variants in PDGFRA on chromosome 4q12 (lead SNP: rs7677751, allelic odds ratio = 1.26 (95% CI: 1.16–1.36), Pmeta = 7.87×10−9) were identified to be significantly associated with corneal astigmatism, exhibiting consistent effect sizes across all five cohorts. This highlights the potential role of variants in PDGFRA in the genetic etiology of corneal astigmatism across diverse Asian populations
Ginseng and ginkgo biloba effects on cognition as modulated by cardiovascular reactivity: a randomised trial
Background
There is some evidence to suggest that ginseng and Ginkgo biloba can improve cognitive performance, however, very little is known about the mechanisms associated with such improvement. Here, we tested whether cardiovascular reactivity to a task is associated with cognitive improvement.
Methodology/Principal findings
Using a double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover design, participants (N = 24) received two doses of Panax Ginseng (500, 1000 mg) or Ginkgo Biloba (120, 240 mg) (N = 24), and underwent a series of cognitive tests while systolic, diastolic, and heart rate readings were taken. Ginkgo Biloba improved aspects of executive functioning (Stroop and Berg tasks) in females but not in males. Ginseng had no effect on cognition. Ginkgo biloba in females reversed the initial (i.e. placebo) increase in cardiovascular reactivity (systolic and diastolic readings increased compared to baseline) to cognitive tasks. This effect (reversal) was most notable after those tasks (Stroop and Iowa) that elicited the greatest cardiovascular reactivity during placebo. In males, although ginkgo also decreased cardiovascular readings, it did so from an initial (placebo) blunted response (i.e. decrease or no change from baseline) to cognitive tasks. Ginseng, on the contrary, increased cardiovascular readings compared to placebo.
Conclusions/Significance
These results suggest that cardiovascular reactivity may be a mechanism by which ginkgo but not ginseng, in females is associated with certain forms of cognitive improvement
