    Future space transport

Prospects for the mastery of space and the basic problems which must be solved in developing systems for both manned and cargo spacecraft are examined. The achievements and flaws of rocket boosters are discussed as well as the use of reusable spacecraft. The need for orbiting satellite solar power plants and related astrionics for active control of large space structures for space stations and colonies in an age of space industrialization is demonstrated. Various forms of spacecraft propulsion are described including liquid propellant rocket engines, nuclear reactors, thermonuclear rocket engines, electrorocket engines, electromagnetic engines, magnetic gas dynamic generators, electromagnetic mass accelerators (rail guns), laser rocket engines, pulse nuclear rocket engines, ramjet thermonuclear rocket engines, and photon rockets. The possibilities of interstellar flight are assessed

Generation of coherent phonons in bismuth by ultrashort laser pulses in the visible and NIR: displacive versus impulsive excitation mechanism

We have applied femtosecond pump-probe technique with variable pump wavelength to study coherent lattice dynamics in Bi single crystal. Comparison of the coherent amplitude as a function of pump photon energy for two different in symmetry Eg and A1g phonon modes with respective spontaneous resonance Raman profiles reveals that their generation mechanisms are quite distinct. We show that displacive excitation, which is the main mechanism for the generation of coherent A1g phonons, cannot be reduced to the Raman scattering responsible for the generation of lower symmetry coherent lattice modesComment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Analysis of microstrip structures by numerical conformal transformations technique

Computer aided microstrip structures modeling has been performed by conformal mapping technique. A new approach to reduce the connectivity order of the original cross-section geometry of the structure is proposed. The multiply connected domain is reduced to simply connected ones by implementation of magnetic slits concept. The microstrip structures analysis is carried out by numerical conformal transformations technique realized in Schwarz–Christoffel toolbox for MATLAB. This technique is applied to the quasi-static analysis of coupled microstrip lines taking into account the conductor thickness. Described approach ensures high numerical efficiency and can be used for accurate analysis of complex microstrip structures

Evaluation of the PV cell operation temperature in the process of fast switching to open-circuit mode

A procedure for measuring the overheating temperature (ΔT ) of a p-n junction area in the structure of photovoltaic (PV) cells converting laser or solar radiations relative to the ambient temperature has been proposed for the conditions of connecting to an electric load. The basis of the procedure is the measurement of the open-circuit voltage (VO C ) during the initial time period after the fast disconnection of the external resistive load. The simultaneous temperature control on an external heated part of a PV module gives the means for determining the value of VO C at ambient temperature. Comparing it with that measured after switching OFF the load makes the calculation of ΔT possible. Calibration data on the VO C = f(T ) dependences for single-junction AlGaAs/GaAs and triple-junction InGaP/GaAs/Ge PV cells are presented. The temperature dynamics in the PV cells has been determined under flash illumination and during fast commutation of the load. Temperature measurements were taken in two cases: converting continuous laser power by single-junction cells and converting solar power by triple-junction cells operating in the concentrator modules

    Modified bacterial reaction centers

Pigments of borohydride-treated reaction centers of Rhodobacter sphaeroides R 26 and Rhodopseudomonas viridis were analyzed by HPLC with polychromatic detection. In both species, pigment composition and contents were unchanged. Reaction centers from Rhodobacter sphaeroides R26 were prepared in which bacteriochlorophylls (BA,B) and bacteriopheophytins (HA,B) were exchanged with their potential borohydride products reduced at C-31. [3-Hydroxyethyl]-BChl a exchanges selectively into the BA,B pockets, and 31-OH-BPh a to the HA,B pockets. Stable reaction centers are obtained in both cases. A comparison of the absorption and circular dichroism spectra of reaction centers after exchange with 31-OH pigments, and of borohydride-modified reaction centers, reveal distinct differences. It is concluded that during borohydride reduction none of the pigments is chemically modified or extracted from the reaction centers

Anharmonic coherent dynamics of the soft phonon mode of a PbTe crystal

We investigate the ultrafast optical response of PbTe to an intense single-cycle terahertz pulse, resonant with the soft transverse optical (TO) phonon mode of the crystal. We detect multifrequency oscillations of the reflectance anisotropy, which we associate with nonlinear motion of the TO phonon oscillator excited directly by the terahertz pulse. Our observation of monotonically decaying optical anisotropy together with second harmonic oscillations of the TO mode is an evidence of a transient non-centrosymmetric state of the crystal lattice that can be accompanied by the ferroelectric order. We suppose that this state is induced in the PbTe crystal by the intense terahertz pulse via alignment of the local polar nanodomains. This hypothesis is partially supported by the observation of coherent phonons near the satellite phonon mode frequency that are impulsively generated by a femtosecond laser pulse and are considerably enhanced by a synchronous terahertz pulse.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
