Wettability of partially suspended graphene
The dependence of the wettability of graphene on the nature of the underlying substrate remains only partially understood. Here, we systematically investigate the role of liquid-substrate interactions on the wettability of graphene by varying the area fraction of suspended graphene from 0 to 95% by means of nanotextured substrates. We find that completely suspended graphene exhibits the highest water contact angle (85° ± 5°) compared to partially suspended or supported graphene, regardless of the hydrophobicity (hydrophilicity) of the substrate. Further, 80% of the long-range water-substrate interactions are screened by the graphene monolayer, the wettability of which is primarily determined by short-range graphene-liquid interactions. By its well-defined chemical and geometrical properties, supported graphene therefore provides a model system to elucidate the relative contribution of short and long range interactions to the macroscopic contact angle
Mouillage à l'échelle nanométrique : effet des forces à longue portée et des hétérogénéités du substrat

Indekeu (rapporteur).Wetting phenomena on the nanoscale remain poorly understood in spite of their growing theoretical and practical interest. In this context, the present work aimed at studying partial wetting of nanometer-sized alkane droplets on "model" surfaces build by self-assembly of organic monolayers. For this purpose a novel technique, based on "noncontact" Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), has been developed to image, with minimal artefacts, drops of adjustable size directly condensed on solid surfaces. We have thus shown that contact angle of alkanes, wetting a weakly heterogeneous, silanized substrate, noticeably decreases from its macroscopic value for droplets sizes in the submicron range. The line tension, arising in this case from purely dispersive long-range interactions between the liquid and the substrate, is theoretically too weak to be responsible for the observed effect. Therefore we have supposed that contact angle is affected by mesoscopic chemical heterogeneities of the substrate whenever the droplets size becomes suciently small. This scenario has been supported by numerical simulations based on a simplified model of the spatial distribution of surface defects. Similar experiments, performed on different substrates (monolayers made of alcanethiols self-assembled on gold and of alkyl chains covalently bound onto a silicon surface), have also shown that wetting on small scales is strongly affected by minimal physical and chemical surface heterogeneities. Finally, to provide further examples of the potential of the above mentioned AFM technique, we have studied the wettability of nano-structured surfaces and the local wetting properties of hair.

Two recipes for repelling hot water
It has previously been reported that hot drops impacting on a colder surface can lead to loss of surface hydrophobicity unless the surface features are very small. Here the authors find that both small and large features but not intermediate ones are able to preserve hydrophobicity
Tracking of Endothelial Cell Migration and Stiffness Measurements Reveal the Role of Cytoskeletal Dynamics
Cell migration is a complex, tightly regulated multistep process in which cytoskeletal reorganization and focal adhesion redistribution play a central role. Core to both individual and collective migration is the persistent random walk, which is characterized by random force generation and resistance to directional change. We first discuss a model that describes the stochastic movement of ECs and characterizes EC persistence in wound healing. To that end, we pharmacologically disrupted cytoskeletal dynamics, cytochalasin D for actin and nocodazole for tubulin, to understand its contributions to cell morphology, stiffness, and motility. As such, the use of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) enabled us to probe the topography and stiffness of ECs, while time lapse microscopy provided observations in wound healing models. Our results suggest that actin and tubulin dynamics contribute to EC shape, compressive moduli, and directional organization in collective migration. Insights from the model and time lapse experiment suggest that EC speed and persistence are directionally organized in wound healing. Pharmacological disruptions suggest that actin and tubulin dynamics play a role in collective migration. Current insights from both the model and experiment represent an important step in understanding the biomechanics of EC migration as a therapeutic target

Equilibrating Nanoparticle Monolayers Using Wetting Films
Monolayers of bimodal gold nanoparticles on silicon are investigated by a combination of microscopy (dry monolayers) and x-ray diffraction (dry and wet monolayers). In the presence of an excess of small particles, the nanoscale packing structure closely resembles the small-particle-rich scenario of the structural crossover transition that has been predicted and also observed with micron-scale hard-sphere colloids. Structural morphology is monitored in situ during monolayer dissolution and reassembly within the thin liquid wetting film. This approach allows investigation of size and solvent effects on nanoparticles in quasi-two-dimensional confinement.Engineering and Applied Science
Collapse and Reversibility of the Superhydrophobic State on Nanotextured Surfaces
Superhydrophobic coatings repel liquids by trapping air inside microscopic surface textures. However, the resulting composite interface is prone to collapse under external pressure. Nanometer-size textures should facilitate more resilient coatings owing to geometry and confinement effects at the nanoscale. Here, we use in situ x-ray diffraction to study the collapse of the superhydrophobic state in arrays of approximate to 20 nm-wide silicon textures with cylindrical, conical, and linear features defined by block-copolymer self-assembly and plasma etching. We reveal that the superhydrophobic state vanishes above critical pressures which depend on texture shape and size. This phenomenon is irreversible for all but the conical surface textures which exhibit a spontaneous, partial reappearance of the trapped gas phase upon liquid depressurization. This process is influenced by the kinetics of gas-liquid exchange
