Isotropization of Bianchi-Type Cosmological Solutions in Brans-Dicke Theory
The cosmic, general analitic solutions of the Brans--Dicke Theory for the
flat space of homogeneous and isotropic models containing perfect, barotropic,
fluids are seen to belong to a wider class of solutions --which includes
cosmological models with the open and the closed spaces of the
Friedmann--Robertson--Walker metric, as well as solutions for models with
homogeneous but anisotropic spaces corresponding to the Bianchi--Type metric
clasification-- when all these solutions are expressed in terms of reduced
variables. The existence of such a class lies in the fact that the scalar
field, , times a function of the mean scale factor or ``volume element'',
, which depends on time and on the barotropic index of the
equation of state used, can be written as a function of a ``cosmic time''
reduced in terms of another function of the mean scale factor depending itself
again on the barotropic index but independent of the metrics here employed.
This reduction procedure permites one to analyze if explicitly given
anisotropic cosmological solutions ``isotropize'' in the course of their time
evolution. For if so can happen, it could be claimed that there exists a
subclass of solutions that is stable under anisotropic perturbations.Comment: 15 pages, Late
Isotropization of Bianchi type models and a new FRW solution in Brans-Dicke theory
Using scaled variables we are able to integrate an equation valid for
isotropic and anisotropic Bianchi type I, V, IX models in Brans-Dicke (BD)
theory. We analyze known and new solutions for these models in relation with
the possibility that anisotropic models asymptotically isotropize, and/or
possess inflationary properties. In particular, a new solution of curve
() Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies in Brans-Dicke theory
is analyzed.Comment: 15 pages, 4 postscript figures, to appear in Gen. Rel. Grav., special

Heterodyne non-demolition measurements on cold atomic samples: towards the preparation of non-classical states for atom interferometry
We report on a novel experiment to generate non-classical atomic states via
quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements on cold atomic samples prepared in a
high finesse ring cavity. The heterodyne technique developed for the QND
detection exhibits an optical shot-noise limited behavior for local oscillator
optical power of a few hundred \muW, and a detection bandwidth of several GHz.
This detection tool is used in single pass to follow non destructively the
internal state evolution of an atomic sample when subjected to Rabi
oscillations or a spin-echo interferometric sequence.Comment: 23 page
Can induced gravity isotropize Bianchi I, V, or IX Universes?
We analyze if Bianchi I, V, and IX models in the Induced Gravity (IG) theory
can evolve to a Friedmann--Roberson--Walker (FRW) expansion due to the
non--minimal coupling of gravity and the scalar field. The analytical results
that we found for the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory are now applied to the IG theory
which has ( being the square ratio of the Higgs to
Planck mass) in a cosmological era in which the IG--potential is not
significant. We find that the isotropization mechanism crucially depends on the
value of . Its smallness also permits inflationary solutions. For the
Bianch V model inflation due to the Higgs potential takes place afterwads, and
subsequently the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) ends with an effective FRW
evolution. The ordinary tests of successful cosmology are well satisfied.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. D1
Three-dimensional electronic instabilities in polymerized solid A1C60
The low-temperature structure of A1C60 (A=K, Rb) is an ordered array of
polymerized C60 chains, with magnetic properties that suggest a non-metallic
ground state. We study the paramagnetic state of this phase using
first-principles electronic-structure methods, and examine the magnetic
fluctuations around this state using a model Hamiltonian. The electronic and
magnetic properties of even this polymerized phase remain strongly three
dimensional, and the magnetic fluctuations favor an unusual three-dimensional
antiferromagnetically ordered structure with a semi-metallic electronic
spectrum.Comment: REVTeX 3.0, 10 pages, 4 figures available on request from

Plane-symmetric inhomogeneous Brans-Dicke cosmology with an equation of state
We present a new exact solution in Brans-Dicke theory. The solution describes
inhomogeneous plane-symmetric perfect fluid cosmological model with an equation
of state . Some main properties of the solution are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, Late
A framework for dissecting affinities of multidrug efflux transporter AcrB to fluoroquinolones
Sufficient concentration of antibiotics close to their target is key for antimicrobial action. Among the tools exploited by bacteria to reduce the internal concentration of antibiotics, multidrug efflux pumps stand out for their ability to capture and expel many unrelated compounds out of the cell. Determining the specificities and efflux efficiency of these pumps towards their substrates would provide quantitative insights into the development of antibacterial strategies. In this light, we developed a competition efflux assay on whole cells, that allows measuring the efficacy of extrusion of clinically used quinolones in populations and individual bacteria. Experiments reveal the efficient competitive action of some quinolones that restore an active concentration of other fluoroquinolones. Computational methods show how quinolones interact with the multidrug efflux transporter AcrB. Combining experiments and computations unveils a key molecular mechanism acting in vivo to detoxify bacterial cells. The developed assay can be generalized to the study of other efflux pumps
Spin squeezing, entanglement and quantum metrology with Bose-Einstein condensates
Squeezed states, a special kind of entangled states, are known as a useful
resource for quantum metrology. In interferometric sensors they allow to
overcome the "classical" projection noise limit stemming from the independent
nature of the individual photons or atoms within the interferometer. Motivated
by the potential impact on metrology as wells as by fundamental questions in
the context of entanglement, a lot of theoretical and experimental effort has
been made to study squeezed states. The first squeezed states useful for
quantum enhanced metrology have been proposed and generated in quantum optics,
where the squeezed variables are the coherences of the light field. In this
tutorial we focus on spin squeezing in atomic systems. We give an introduction
to its concepts and discuss its generation in Bose-Einstein condensates. We
discuss in detail the experimental requirements necessary for the generation
and direct detection of coherent spin squeezing. Two exemplary experiments
demonstrating adiabatically prepared spin squeezing based on motional degrees
of freedom and diabatically realized spin squeezing based on internal hyperfine
degrees of freedom are discussed.Comment: Phd tutorial, 23 pages, 17 figure
A microfluidic flow-cell for the study of the ultrafast dynamics of biological systems
The study of biochemical dynamics by ultrafast spectroscopic methods is often restricted by the limited amount of liquid sample available, while the high repetition rate of light sources can induce photodamage. In order to overcome these limitations, we designed a high flux, sub-ml, capillary flow-cell. While the 0.1 mm thin window of the 0.5 mm cross-section capillary ensures an optimal temporal resolution and a steady beam deviation, the cell-pump generates flows up to ∼0.35 ml/s that are suitable to pump laser repetition rates up to ∼14 kHz, assuming a focal spot-diameter of 100 μm. In addition, a decantation chamber efficiently removes bubbles and allows, via septum, for the addition of chemicals while preserving the closed atmosphere. The minimal useable amount of sample is ∼250 μl
