Those of us who teach in one or more of the Ethiopian training programs in community health are keenly aware of the wealth of information derived from student fieldwork. Only a small proportion of this work is published and therefore accessible to community health professionals. This is unfortunate, given the quality and relevance of much of the research conducted by students while in training. In this special issue of the Ethiopian Journal of Health Development 9 original research papers have been selected which are the result of work completed within these training programs. In certain instances manuscripts were submitted upon learning of this special issue, however this is the minority. Several had been "filed for future reference"; we all know what that implies
SSF loads and controllability during assembly
The Orbiter Primary Reaction Control System (PRCS) pulse width and firing frequency is restricted to prevent excessive loads in the Space Station Freedom (SSF). The feasibility of using the SSF Control Moment Gyros (CMG) as a secondary controller for load relief is evaluated. The studies revealed the CMG not only reduced loads but were useful for other SSF functions: vibration suppression and modal excitation. Vibration suppression lowers the g level for the SSF micro-g experiments and damps the low frequency oscillations that cause crew sickness. Modal excitation could be used for the modal identification experiment and health monitoring. The CMG's reduced the peak loads and damped the vibrations. They were found to be an effective multi-purpose ancillary device for SSF operation
Pandemic Flu: Yes, We Can Do Something About It!
The emergence of influenza with virulence comparable to the famous 1918-1919 “Spanish Flu” has the potential to kill hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Should we find ourselves being forced to ‘live with the flu,’ it is imperative that we recognize that there are things that we can do – many simple – that may decrease the chance of our loved ones, our co-workers and ourselves becoming infected with the flu. The key is to decrease the number of new infections created by each newly infected person. And this relates to mathematical modeling of the disease, a very simple example of which is shown here
Holistic Trinity of Services Sciences: Management, Social, & Engineering Sciences
Services industries comprise about 75% of the economy of developed nations. To design and operate services systems for today and tomorrow, we need to educate a new type of engineer who focuses not on manufacturing but on services. Such an engineer must be able to integrate 3 sciences - management, social and engineering – into her analysis of services systems. Within the context of a new research center at MIT – CESF (Center for Engineering Systems Fundamentals) – we show how newly emerging services systems require such a 3-way holistic analysis. We deliberately select some non-standard services, as many business services such as supply chains have been studied extensively
75th Anniversary: Selected Features of College Growth and Development During the Last 25 Years 1961-1986,
From the preface:
The year 1986 marks the 75th Anniversary of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, which was established initially as the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University effective July 28, 1911.
Comprehensive historical reviews covering the development of the College have been set forth in two reports published in commemoration of its 25th and 50th anniversaries. They are: A History of the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University: 1911-1936, edited by Raymond J. Hoyle and Laurie D. Cox; and Forestry College: Essays on the Growth and Development of New York State\u27s College of Forestry, 1911-1961, edited by George R. Armstrong and Marvin W. Kranz and published by the Alumni Association of the College.
In the pages that follow, selected features of the College\u27s growth and development during the 25-year period from 1961 to 1986 are reviewed. The material presented is far less complete in its treatment of College history than the reports cited above. Prepared primarily for presentation at the Opening Convocation in celebration of the College\u27s 75th Anniversary held January 24, 1986, the treatise necessarily had to be brief and selective in its coverage
National Interest and Naval Forces in the 1990s
During the past 45 years, the U.S.- Soviet relationship has been the dynamic focus of our foreign and defense policy. Our preoccupation with containing Soviet expansionism-and with deterring nuclear war-has limited to a degree our ability to focus on other national and international problems. Now that relationship is again on the move, but in. a positive, less confrontational direction. What the final outcome will be when the maneuvers are over, and whether our country will retain its position of strength, depend a lot on our wisdom in reacting to these developments in the Soviet Union
Personal Reflections on the Use of Military Force and Its Relevance to National Security Strategy
As I reflect on my personal career in the field of military force and national security, I wish I could offer a simple vision, sharply refined and clarified by decades of experience. But such a vision eludes me
FOCUS GROUP IDENTIFICATION OF BARRIERS TO THE USE OF MODERN CONTRACEPTION IN THE GARA MULETA DISTRICT OF EAST HARARGHE
ABSTRACT:
With a crude growth rate in excess of 5% for the district and a contraception prevalence rate of less than 1%, the identification of barriers to the use of modern contraception was made a priority by the district health management team of Gara Muleta District, East Hararghe Administrative Region. As very little was known about barriers to use, it was decided to conduct focus group sessions with specific homogeneous groups of interest. These were young married males and females, older men and women (> 45 yrs), clergymen, and trained traditional birth attendants. Samples of each were taken from urban and rural settings. Large disparities based on sex and whether urban or rural dwellers were identified. Specific gaps in knowledge and misinformation regarding modern contraception were identified upon which the planning of initial family planning interventions will be based
