    Housing and equity wealth effects of Italian households

    The study quantifies stock market and housing market wealth effects on households' non-durable consumption using Italian household panel data (SHIW) of 1989-2002. We found all households react similarly to aggregate housing and stock market gains. We also found statistically and economically significant housing wealth effects with a marginal propensity to consume out of idiosyncratic housing wealth gains to be over 8 percent. The results from idiosyncratic equity wealth e¤ects were lower, at around 0.4 percent. We also found that older households react more to changes in housing wealth.     OBJECTIVE: With the increasing use of oral antineoplastic agents in cancer management, patients and family members need to understand of how to obtain, safely handle, and store the medication, how and when the medications should be taken, and when to report toxic side effects to accomplish efficacious treatment. DATA SOURCES: Research based articles and conference presentations. CONCLUSION: Cancer centers to modify policies, protocols, or practices to assure safe and proper administration of oral antineoplastic agents. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Clinicians need to monitor and facilitate administration of oral antineoplastic agents, and ultimately improve clinical outcomes

    Lensless microscopy, which is also called coherent diffractive imaging (CDI), is a novel and revolutionary approach to imaging. Lensless microscopy relies on coherence of the illumination and on computational postprocessing of the measured data. CDI methods provide large imaging flexibility compared to the standard lens-based microscopy. In this thesis, we have demonstrated applications of the CDI methods with laboratory short wavelength sources such as high harmonic generation or plasma gas discharge sources. Moreover, a new nonlinear CDI method was demonstrated with at second harmonic generation crystals illuminated by IR light

    An Intervention to Improve Adherence and Management of Symptoms for Patients Prescribed Oral Chemotherapy Agents: An Exploratory Study

    Background: The use of oral chemotherapy agents to treat cancer has increased. Patients are responsible for adhering to complex dosing regimens, while monitoring and managing symptoms from side effects of the chemotherapy at home. Objective: This study examined an intervention to manage symptoms and promote adherence to oral chemotherapy agents. Intervention and Methods: A 3 group exploratory pilot study determined how an Automated Voice Response (AVR) system alone (N=40), or the AVR with strategies to manage symptoms and adherence (N=40), or the AVR with strategies to manage adherence (N=39) reduced symptom severity and improved adherence. Participants received a Symptom Management Toolkit, completed a baseline interview, and were randomized to receive 8 weekly AVR calls. The AVR directed patients to the toolkit for high symptoms and nurse calls occurred for management of severe symptoms or non-adherence. An exit interview occurred at 10 weeks. Results: Mean age was 59.6, with 70% female and 76% Caucasian. Overall, 42% of patients were non-adherent, with missed doses increasing with regimen complexity. Symptom severity declined over time in all groups. No difference was found in adherence rates among intervention groups. Higher adherence rates were related with lower levels of symptom severity across groups. Conclusions: Adherence is a significant clinical problem, which can affect efficacy of the cancer treatment. The AVR intervention alone was just as effective as the AVR plus the nurse intervention at promoting adherence and managing symptoms from side effects. Implications for Practice: Nurses need to focus on patient education by assuring patient understanding of oral agent regimen, and the need to adhere to the oral agent for efficacious cancer treatment. Nurses can promote the use of medication reminders and self- management of symptoms from side effects, to support adherence to the oral agent

    Early Neoproterozoic Basin Formation in Yukon, Canada: Implications for the make-up and break-up of Rodinia

    SUMMARY: Geological mapping and stratigraphic anaylsis of the early Neoproterozoic Fifteenmile Group in the western Ogilvie Mountains of Yukon, Canada, has revealed large lateral facies changes in both carbonate and siliciclastic strata.  Syn-sedimentary NNW-side-down normal faulting during deposition of the lower Fifteenmile Group generated local topographic relief and wedge-shaped stratal geometries. These strata were eventually capped by platformal carbonate after the establishment of a NNW-facing stromatolitic reef complex that formed adjacent to the coeval Little Dal Group of the Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories.  Correlations between specific formations within these groups are tested with carbon isotope chemostratigraphy.  As there are no known 830-780 Ma stratigraphic successions south of 62°N, the basin-forming event that accommodated the Fifteenmile and Little Dal Groups of the Ogilvie and Mackenzie Mountains and equivalent strata in the Shaler Supergroup of Victoria Island was restricted to the northwest margin of Laurentia. Therefore, this event does not represent widespread rifting of the entire western margin of Laurentia and instead we propose that these strata were accommodated in a failed rift generated by localized subsidence associated with the emplacement of the coeval Guibei (China) and Gairdner (Australia) large igneous provinces.  The northern margin of Laurentia was reactivated by renewed extension at ca. 720 Ma associated with the emplacement of the Franklin large igneous province.  Significant crustal thinning and generation of a thermally subsiding passive margin on the western margin of Laurentia may not have occurred until the late Ediacaran.RÉSUMÉLe cartographiage géologique et l’analyse stratigraphique du groupe néoprotézoïque Fifteenmile situé à l’ouest des montagnes Ogilvie du Yukon, Canada, ont révélé de grands changements latéraux de faciès à la fois pour les strates carbonatées et silicoclastiques. La mise en place des failles normales syn-sédimentaires inclinées vers le NNW au cours du dépôt du groupe Fifteenmile inférieur, a entrainé la formation locale d’un relief topographique et une prisme des strates. Ces dernières ont finalement été recouvertes de carbonates de plate-forme issus de la mise en place d’un complexe récifal stromatolitique exposé NNW contigu à la formation de même âge du groupe Little Dal des montagnes Ogilvie, en Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Les corrélations existant entre des formations spécifiques de chacun de ces groupes, sont testées grâce à la chimiostratigraphie des isotopes du carbone. Aucunes successions stratigraphiques agées de 830-780 Ma n’étant connues au sud de 62° N, la formation du bassin où sont accumulés les groupes Fifteenmile et Little Dal des massifs Ogilvie et Mackenzie, ainsi que les strates analogues du supergroupe Shaler de l’île Victoria, était restreinte à la bordure nord-ouest de la Laurentie. De ce fait, cet événement ne correspond pas au large rifting s’étendant sur l’entière bordure ouest de la Laurentie et nous proposons à la place, que ces strates ont été localisées au cours d’un rift avorté généré par la mise en place simultanée des larges provinces ignées Guibei (Chine) et Gairdner (Australie). La bordure nord de la Laurentie a été réactivée par une nouvelle phase d’extension à ca. 720 Ma associée à l’emplacement de la province ignée Franklin. L’amincissement crustal et la formation d’une marge passive thermiquement subsidente le long de la bordure ouest de la Laurentie ne se sont certainement pas produits avant l’Édiacarien supérieur

    Effect of ultrafiltration during hemodialysis on hepatic and total-body water: an observational study.

    Background The hepatic circulation is involved in adaptive systemic responses to circulatory stress. However, it is vulnerable to both chronic hypervolemia and cardiac dysfunction. The influence of hemodialysis (HD) and ultrafiltration (UF) upon liver water content has been understudied. We conducted a detailed pilot study to characterize the effects of HD upon liver water content and stiffness, referenced to peripheral fluid mobilization and total body water. Methods We studied 14 established HD patients without liver disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) together with ultrasound-based elastography and bioimpedance assessment were employed to measure hepatic water content and stiffness, body composition, and water content in the calf pre- and post-HD. Results Mean UF volume was 8.13 ± 4.4 mL/kg/hr. Fluid removal was accompanied with effective mobilization of peripheral water (measured with MRI within the thigh) from 0.85 ± 0.21 g/mL to 0.83 ± 0.18 g/mL, and reduction in total body water (38.9 ± 9.4 L to 37.4 ± 8.6 L). However, directly-measured liver water content did not decrease (0.57 ± 0.1 mL/g to 0.79 ± 0.3 m L/g). Liver water content and IVC diameter were inversely proportional (r = - 0.57, p = 0.03), a relationship which persisted after dialysis. Conclusions In contrast to the reduced total body water content, liver water content did not decrease post-HD, consistent with a diversion of blood to the hepatic circulation, in those with signs of greater circulatory stress. This novel observation suggests that there is a unique hepatic response to HD with UF and that the liver may play a more important role in intradialytic hypotension and fluid shifts than currently appreciated
