Distribution of the spotted minnow (Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1842)) (Teleostei: Galaxiidae) in Western Australia including range extensions and sympatric species
Galaxias maculatus was captured from a number of rivers outside its previously known range. In Western Australia, it was formerly only known from rivers and lakes between the Goodga River (Two People's Bay, 30 km east of Albany) and the Dailey River (50 km east of Esperance), with additional records from the Boat Harbour Lakes (Kent River). An intensive survey of the inland fishes in rivers and lakes along the south coast of Western Australia has extended its distribution east by 50 km (Thomas River), west by approximately 40 km (Walpole River) and north by 400 km (Harvey River). The Western Australian Museum also has a specimen from the Canning River, a further 100 km north. Field salinity tolerance of G maculatus was high, with fish found alive in 81 mScm 1 (-45 ppt). The freshwater piscifauna east of, and including, the Pallinup River is depauperate, with G. maculatusbeing the only freshwater species present. All sympatric teleosts are tolerant of salinity and, with the exception of the introduced Gambusia holbrooki, are estuarine, including Pseudogobius olorum, Leptatherina wallacei and Acanthopagrus butcheri
Exotic Heavy Fermion State in the Filled Skutterudite PrFeP Uncovered by the de Haas-van Alphen Effect
We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiment on the filled skutterudite
PrFeP exhibiting apparent Kondo-like behaviors in the transport and
thermal properties. We have found enormously enhanced cyclotron effective mass
in the high field phase (HFP), which
indicates that PrFeP is the first Pr-compound in which really heavy
mass has been unambiguously confirmed. Also in the low field non-magnetic
ordered phase (LOP), we observed the dHvA branch with that is quite heavy taking into account its small Fermi surface volume
(0.15% of the Brillouin zone size). The insensitivity of mass in LOP against
the magnetic field suggests that the quadrupolar interaction plays a main role
both in the mass renormalization and the LOP formation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Phys. Rev. B (01 October 2002) in pres
Spin, charge and orbital ordering in ferrimagnetic insulator YBaMnO
The oxygen-deficient (double) perovskite YBaMnO, containing
corner-linked MnO square pyramids, is found to exhibit ferrimagnetic
ordering in its ground state. In the present work we report
generalized-gradient-corrected, relativistic first-principles full-potential
density-functional calculations performed on YBaMnO in the nonmagnetic,
ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states. The charge, orbital and spin orderings
are explained with site-, angular momentum- and orbital-projected density of
states, charge-density plots, electronic structure and total energy studies.
YBaMnO is found to stabilize in a G-type ferrimagnetic state in
accordance with experimental results. The experimentally observed insulating
behavior appears only when we include ferrimagnetic ordering in our
calculation. We observed significant optical anisotropy in this material
originating from the combined effect of ferrimagnetic ordering and crystal
field splitting. In order to gain knowledge about the presence of different
valence states for Mn in YBaMnO we have calculated -edge x-ray
absorption near-edge spectra for the Mn and O atoms. The presence of the
different valence states for Mn is clearly established from the x-ray
absorption near-edge spectra, hyperfine field parameters and the magnetic
properties study. Among the experimentally proposed structures, the recently
reported description based on 4/ is found to represent the stable
structure
Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of -dimensional granular binary mixtures at low density
The Navier-Stokes transport coefficients for binary mixtures of smooth
inelastic hard disks or spheres under gravity are determined from the Boltzmann
kinetic theory by application of the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the
local homogeneous cooling state. It is shown that the Navier-Stokes transport
coefficients are not affected by the presence of gravity. As in the elastic
case, the transport coefficients of the mixture verify a set of coupled linear
integral equations that are approximately solved by using the leading terms in
a Sonine polynomial expansion. The results reported here extend previous
calculations [V. Garz\'o and J. W. Dufty, Phys. Fluids {\bf 14}, 1476 (2002)]
to an arbitrary number of dimensions. To check the accuracy of the
Chapman-Enskog results, the inelastic Boltzmann equation is also numerically
solved by means of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to evaluate the
diffusion and shear viscosity coefficients for hard disks. The comparison shows
a good agreement over a wide range of values of the coefficients of restitution
and the parameters of the mixture (masses and sizes).Comment: 6 figures, to be published in J. Stat. Phy
Comparison of some Reduced Representation Approximations
In the field of numerical approximation, specialists considering highly
complex problems have recently proposed various ways to simplify their
underlying problems. In this field, depending on the problem they were tackling
and the community that are at work, different approaches have been developed
with some success and have even gained some maturity, the applications can now
be applied to information analysis or for numerical simulation of PDE's. At
this point, a crossed analysis and effort for understanding the similarities
and the differences between these approaches that found their starting points
in different backgrounds is of interest. It is the purpose of this paper to
contribute to this effort by comparing some constructive reduced
representations of complex functions. We present here in full details the
Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA) and the Empirical Interpolation Method (EIM)
together with other approaches that enter in the same category
Ultra-red Galaxies Signpost Candidate Protoclusters at High Redshift
We present images obtained with LABOCA of a sample of 22 galaxies selected via their red Herschel SPIRE colors. We aim to see if these luminous, rare, and distant galaxies are signposting dense regions in the early universe. Our 870 μm survey covers an area of ≈1 deg2 down to an average rms of , with our five deepest maps going ≈2× deeper still. We catalog 86 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) around our "signposts," detected above a significance of 3.5σ. This implies a overdensity of (or {L}_{\mathrm{FIR}}=6.7\times {10}^{12}\mbox{--}2.9\times {10}^{13}\,{L}_{\odot }) DSFGs, excluding our signposts, when comparing our number counts to those in "blank fields." Thus, we are 99.93% confident that our signposts are pinpointing overdense regions in the universe, and ≈95% [50%] confident that these regions are overdense by a factor of at least ≥1.5 × [2×]. Using template spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and SPIRE/LABOCA photometry, we derive a median photometric redshift of z = 3.2 ± 0.2 for our signposts, with an inter-quartile range of z = 2.8–3.6, somewhat higher than expected for ~850 μm selected galaxies. We constrain the DSFGs that are likely responsible for this overdensity to within of their respective signposts. These "associated" DSFGs are radially distributed within (physical) distances of 1.6 ± 0.5 Mpc from their signposts, have median star formation rates (SFRs) of (for a Salpeter stellar inital mass function) and median gas reservoirs of . These candidate protoclusters have average total SFRs of at least and space densities of ~9 × 10−7 Mpc−3, consistent with the idea that their constituents may evolve to become massive early-type galaxies in the centers of the rich galaxy clusters we see today
Multimessenger astronomy with the Einstein Telescope
Gravitational waves (GWs) are expected to play a crucial role in the
development of multimessenger astrophysics. The combination of GW observations
with other astrophysical triggers, such as from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites,
optical/radio telescopes, and neutrino detectors allows us to decipher science
that would otherwise be inaccessible. In this paper, we provide a broad review
from the multimessenger perspective of the science reach offered by the third
generation interferometric GW detectors and by the Einstein Telescope (ET) in
particular. We focus on cosmic transients, and base our estimates on the
results obtained by ET's predecessors GEO, LIGO, and Virgo.Comment: 26 pages. 3 figures. Special issue of GRG on the Einstein Telescope.

Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
application as distance indicators.Comment: Review article, 63 pages (28 figures), Accepted for publication in

Experimental Observation of Differences in the Dynamic Response of Newtonian and Viscoelastic Fluids
In this paper we present an experimental study of the dynamic responses of a
Newtonian fluid and a Maxwellian fluid under an oscillating pressure gradient.
We use laser Doppler anemometry in order to determine the velocity of each
fluid inside a cylindrical tube. In the case of the Newtonian fluid, the
dissipative nature is observed and the response obeys the Zhou and Sheng
universality (PRB 39, 12027 (1989)). In the dynamic response of the Maxwellian
fluid an enhancement at the frequencies predicted by the corresponding theory
(PRE 58, 6323 (1998)) is observed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 Figures, paper to be published in Phys. Rev.
