Transient LTRE analysis reveals the demographic and trait-mediated processes that buffer population growth.

Temporal variation in environmental conditions affects population growth directly via its impact on vital rates, and indirectly through induced variation in demographic structure and phenotypic trait distributions. We currently know very little about how these processes jointly mediate population responses to their environment. To address this gap, we develop a general transient life table response experiment (LTRE) which partitions the contributions to population growth arising from variation in (1) survival and reproduction, (2) demographic structure, (3) trait values and (4) climatic drivers. We apply the LTRE to a population of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventer) to demonstrate the impact of demographic and trait-mediated processes. Our analysis provides a new perspective on demographic buffering, which may be a more subtle phenomena than is currently assumed. The new LTRE framework presents opportunities to improve our understanding of how trait variation influences population dynamics and adaptation in stochastic environments

Estudio hidrológico de la cuenca del río Cauca con una posterior evaluación técnica de la PCH Patico La Cabrera

Trabajo de InvestigaciónEl presente trabajo de investigación propone un estudio de los lineamientos y parámetros hidráulicos e hidrológicos usados en el diseño y construcción de la Pequeña Central Hidroeléctrica Patico – La Cabrera ubicada en el departamento del Cauca (Colombia) , con el fin de establecer pautas que recalquen la viabilidad de este tipo de proyectos en zonas rurales las cuales por su bajo asentamiento poblacional y su ubicación no cuentan con una cobertura energética, de igual forma se pretende hacer un énfasis en este tipo de estructuras las cuales además de ser económicas tiene un impacto ambiental considerablemente menor comparados con los métodos tradicionales de obtención de energía. En el Desarrollo de la investigación se realiza la caracterización y evaluación de los parámetros usados en el momento del diseño y construcción de la PCH Patico- La Cabrera mostrando así una orientación conceptual basados en documentos y guías de diseño de PCHs, los mapas y datos de las estaciones limnigráficas, limnimétricas y pluviométricas las cuales fueron proporcionados por el IGAC y por el IDEAM, siendo estos documentos bases para consolidar el estudio aquí presentado. Determinants of grade retention in France and Spain: Does birth month matter?

In France and Spain, children born in the same calendar year start school together, regardless of maturity differences due to their birth month. This paper analyses the educational impact of birth month on the probability of grade retention controlling by other covariates. Using the PISA 2009 database for both countries, wedo identify a great impact on grade retention since students born in the last months of the year are between 70% and 80% more likely to repeat a grade than children born in the first months of the same year. We conclude that policy interventions are required in those countries to ensure that individuals are not unfairly penalized by their birth month

La arquitectura como lugar poético: Centro de sanación para el cáncer, complejo hospitalario San Juan de Dios.

El problema en la arquitectura hospitalaria parte de la predominancia de aspectos funcionales y técnicos sobre los aspectos humanísticos, siendo el enfoque humano importante para apoyar la experiencia en un espacio arquitectónico para la sanación, por lo tanto, se propone armonizar los aspectos funcionales (técnicos) y humanos en un espacio sanatorio para el cáncer a partir de unas estrategias arquitectónicas que favorezcan el enfoque fenomenológico y su articulación con el paisaje; identificando un conjunto de estrategias, por medio de un caso de estudio, que permitan plantear una arquitectura hospitalaria humanizada para beneficiar la dimensión poética del lugar y favorecer la relación con el entorno construido, reconociendo tipológicamente lo existente con el fin de rescatar la memoria histórica y vincularla con la experiencia y sensación del paciente en un espacio para la sanación.The problem in healthcare architecture starts from the predominance of functional and technical over humanistic aspects, being the human approach important to support the experience in an architectural space for healing, therefore, it is proposed to harmonize the functional (technical) and human aspects in a sanatorium space for cancer, based on architectural strategies that favor the phenomenological approach and its articulation with the landscape; identifying through a case study, a set of strategies to carry out to propose a humanized hospital architecture to benefit the poetic dimension of the place and favor the relationship with the built environment, typologically recognizing what exists in order to rescue the historical memory and link it with the experience and sensation of the patient in a space for healing
