    Nickel Content of Some Hawaiian Soils and Plants and the Relation of Nickel to Plant Growth

    An investigation of the nickel content of some representative soils from the Great Soil Groups of the Hawaiian Islands and the plants growing on them was made to obtain more information on the distribution of nickel in local soils and plants. Furthermore, since various studies reported in the literature showed contrasting observations of either a stimulating or a toxic effect of nickel on plant growth, this investigation was extended to various water culture and soil pot experiments to determine the actual effect of varying concentrations of nickel on the growth of plants. There is a higher nickel content in Hawaiian soils and plants than in the normal soils and plants reported in the literature from other parts of the world. Symptoms of toxicity (chlorosis, necrosis, stunted growth, and sparse, brown, slimy roots) were exhibited by tomato plants grown in nutrient solutions containing 1.0 ppm Ni and more. The chlorosis, necrosis, and stunted growth exhibited by the injured plants in the water culture experiments were also manifested by the plants in the soil pot experiments

    Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among People with Type 2 Diabetes in Taiwan: A Cross-Sectional Survey

    Research into CAM use by people with diabetes is limited. This study explored CAM use among patients who attend diabetic clinics for followup treatment. Special attention was paid to patients' changing patterns of CAM use before and after diagnosis with Type 2 diabetes, their experience of CAM use, and their management of CAM use with conventional medicines. A retrospective cross-sectional survey (n = 326) was undertaken in three census regions in Taiwan, including metropolitan, urban, and rural areas in 2006-7 (87.4% response rate). Participants reported extensive use of CAM with conventional medicines. The prevalence of CAM use was 22.7% before and 61.0% after diagnosis with Type 2 diabetes with nutritional supplements being the most commonly used CAM before and after diagnosis. However, the disclosure rate of CAM use to healthcare professionals remained low (24.6%), and lack of knowledge about CAM ingredients was common (63.4%). Awareness of the widespread use of CAM by people with Type 2 diabetes is crucial for healthcare professionals. The self-administration of both conventional medicines and CAM without disclosure of CAM use to healthcare professionals may result in ineffective diabetes management and adverse effects. CAM information needs to be incorporated into clinical practice and patient and professional education

    The Effects of Simple and Complex Carbohydrates on Mood

    Carbohydrates can be differentiated into two categories, simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Our study looks at the effects of simple versus complex carbohydrates on mood. An anonymous online survey was administered through various social media platforms, such as GroupMe, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as sent to friends and family. The survey included basic demographics questions and questions on the frequency of food consumption, dietary patterns in relation to specific food groups, and mood. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze data in SPSS version 25.0. Our results suggest there is an association between a positive mood and consumption of complex carbohydrates, with less consumption of simple carbohydrates. Higher levels of mood were found to be associated with healthier food groups and a less processed diet.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2023/1099/thumbnail.jp

    A preliminary study on the ecology of scrub typhus was conducted in a transmigration village Mulyorejo, Way AbungIII, Lampung Utara, Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1982. Serological examination on the human population revealed 11.9% seropositive against scrub typhus, being higher in males than in females, likewise also higher in adults than children. Seropositivity against scrub typhus among murid rodents captured was 42.9%. It was highest on Rattus exulans followed by Rattus tiomanicus. Two species of chigger vectors, Leptotrombidium (L.) deliensis and Leptotrombidium (LJ) fletcheri were found in the area studied. The infestation of those two species were highest on R. exulans and R. tiomanicus

    Exploring the Use of European Weather Regimes for Improving User-Relevant Hydrological Forecasts at the Subseasonal Scale in Switzerland

    Across the globe, there has been an increasing interest in improving the predictability of subseasonal hydrometeorological forecasts, as they play a valuable role in medium- to long-term planning in many sectors, such as agriculture, navigation, hydropower, and emergency management. However, these forecasts still have very limited skill at the monthly time scale; hence, this study explores the possibilities for improving forecasts through different pre- and postprocessing techniques at the interface with a Precipitationn–Runoff–Evapotranspiration Hydrological Response Unit Model (PREVAH). Specifically, this research aims to assess the benefit of European weather regime (WR) data within a hybrid forecasting setup, a combination of a traditional hydrological model and a machine learning (ML) algorithm, to improve the performance of subseasonal hydrometeorological forecasts in Switzerland. The WR data contain information about the large-scale atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic–European region, and thus allow the hydrological model to exploit potential flow-dependent predictability. Four hydrological variables are investigated: total runoff, baseflow, soil moisture, and snowmelt. The improvements in the forecasts achieved with the pre- and postprocessing techniques vary with catchments, lead times, and variables. Adding WR data has clear benefits, but these benefits are not consistent across the study area or among the variables. The usefulness of WR data is generally observed for longer lead times, e.g., beyond the third week. Furthermore, a multimodel approach is applied to determine the “best practice” for each catchment and improve forecast skill over the entire study area.
