Between Rivers: Reflections on home, obligation, and otherness from a confluence of conservation and connectivity
Between Rivers is an exploration of the role of the outsider in international watershed conservation. Through extended personal narrative and analysis of current events, ethnographic texts, and sociopolitical history, this thesis considers questions related to responsibility in conservation. The narrative focuses on Ecuador’s Jondachi Fest, a case study in international collaboration and celebration of an ecologically key river system. Grassroots celebrations and river festivals are sprouting up on endangered rivers all across South America. In this thesis, the author examines her own experience as an outsider working to facilitate one such festival – the challenges, shortcomings, relationships, and victories – and the sweeping, undeniably ubiquitous role of the river in her life
The role of Isocitrate Lyase (ICL1) in the metabolic adaptation of Candida albicans biofilms
Background
A major characteristic of Candida biofilm cells that differentiates them from free-floating cells is their high tolerance to antifungal drugs. This high resistance is attributed to particular biofilm properties, including the accumulation of extrapolymeric substances, morphogenetic switching, and metabolic flexibility.
Objectives
This study evaluated the roles of metabolic processes (in particular the glyoxylate cycle) on biofilm formation, antifungal drug resistance, morphology, and cell wall components.
Methods
Growth, adhesion, biofilm formation, and cell wall carbohydrate composition were quantified for isogenic Candida albicans ICL1/ICL1, ICL1/icl1, and icl1/icl1 strains. The morphology and topography of these strains were compared by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. FKS1 (glucan synthase), ERG11 (14-α-demethylase), and CDR2 (efflux pump) mRNA levels were quantified using qRT-PCR.
Results
The ICL1/icl1 and icl1/icl1 strains formed similar biofilms and exhibited analogous drug-tolerance levels to the control ICL1/ICL1 strains. Furthermore, the drug sequestration ability of β-1, 3-glucan, a major carbohydrate component of the extracellular matrix, was not impaired. However, the inactivation of ICL1 did impair morphogenesis. ICL1 deletion also had a considerable effect on the expression of the FKS1, ERG11, and CDR2 genes. FKS1 and ERG11 were upregulated in ICL1/icl1 and icl1/icl1 cells throughout the biofilm developmental stages, and CDR2 was upregulated at the early phase. However, their expression was downregulated compared to the control ICL1/ICL1 strain.
Conclusions
We conclude that the glyoxylate cycle is not a specific determinant of biofilm drug resistance
Attitude to the study of chemistry and its relationship with achievement in an introductory undergraduate course
A positive attitude to a subject may be congruent with higher achievement; however, limited evidence supports this for students in undergraduate chemistry – this may result from difficulties in quantifying attitude. Therefore, in this study, the Attitude to the Study of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI) – a validated instrument to quantify attitude, was used to measure attitude to chemistry in 125 undergraduates s udying an introductory course in chemistry, as part of a BSc Chemistry major. The 13 week course contained 4 summative assessments: practical (PRAC), tutorial (TUT), on-line web-based learning (OWL), and a final exam (FE). Sub-scales within ASCI which quantify the
‘affective’ and ‘cognitive’ components of attitude were determined. Firstly, for all 125 students, weak correlations (r) between the affective scale score and FE
(r=0.275, P<0.01) and TOTAL (r=0.228, P<0.05), were recorded. Secondly, a low achieving (LA, n=48) and a high achieving (HA, n=77) group were identified using a cluster analysis procedure. The HA group scored higher than the LA
group in PRAC, OWL, FE and TOTAL (all P<0.001), but the clusters were not different in their scores for either the affective or the cognitive components of attitude. There was no correlation between attitude and achievement in the HA group, and only one weak positive correlation (0.409), between the affective score and achievement in the LA group. We suggest that although a positive attitude may be an important part of the undergraduate experience, it is at best only weakly associated with achievement in undergraduate chemistry
An unlikely radio halo in the low X-ray luminosity galaxy cluster RXC J1514.9-1523
We report the discovery of a giant radio halo in the galaxy cluster RXC
J1514.9-1523 at z=0.22 with a relatively low X-ray luminosity, erg s. This faint, diffuse
radio source is detected with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 327 MHz.
The source is barely detected at 1.4 GHz in a NVSS pointing that we have
reanalyzed. The integrated radio spectrum of the halo is quite steep, with a
slope \alpha = 1.6 between 327 MHz and 1.4 GHz. While giant radio halos are
common in more X-ray luminous cluster mergers, there is a less than 10%
probability to detect a halo in systems with L_X \ltsim 8 \times 10^{44} erg
s. The detection of a new giant halo in this borderline luminosity
regime can be particularly useful for discriminating between the competing
theories for the origin of ultrarelativistic electrons in clusters.
Furthermore, if our steep radio spectral index is confirmed by future deeper
radio observations, this cluster would provide another example of the recently
discovered population of ultra-steep spectrum radio halos, predicted by the
model in which the cluster cosmic ray electrons are produced by turbulent

Circumstellar interaction in supernovae in dense environments - an observational perspective
In a supernova explosion, the ejecta interacting with the surrounding
circumstellar medium (CSM) give rise to variety of radiation. Since CSM is
created from the mass lost from the progenitor star, it carries footprints of
the late time evolution of the star. This is one of the unique ways to get a
handle on the nature of the progenitor star system. Here, I will focus mainly
on the supernovae (SNe) exploding in dense environments, a.k.a. Type IIn SNe.
Radio and X-ray emission from this class of SNe have revealed important
modifications in their radiation properties, due to the presence of high
density CSM. Forward shock dominance of the X-ray emission, internal free-free
absorption of the radio emission, episodic or non-steady mass loss rate,

Ranging patterns and site fidelity of Snubfin Dolphins in Yawuru Nagulagun/Roebuck Bay, Western Australia
For long-lived species such as marine mammals, having sufficient data on ranging patterns and space use in a timescale suitable for population management and conservation can be difficult. Yawuru Nagulagun/Roebuck Bay in the northwest of Western Australia supports one of the largest known populations of Australian snubfin dolphins (Orcaella heinsohni)—a species with a limited distribution, vulnerable conservation status, and high cultural value. Understanding the species’ use of this area will inform management for the long-term conservation of this species. We combined 11 years of data collected from a variety of sources between 2007 and 2020 to assess the ranging patterns and site fidelity of this population. Ranging patterns were estimated using minimum convex polygons (MCPs) and fixed kernel densities (weighted to account for survey effort) to estimate core and representative areas of use for both the population and for individuals. We estimated the population to range over a small area within the bay (103.05 km2). The Mean individual representative area of use (95% Kernel density contour) was estimated as 39.88 km2 (± 32.65 SD) and the Mean individual core area of use (50% Kernel density contour) was estimated as 21.66 km2 (±18.85 SD) with the majority of sightings located in the northern part of the bay less than 10 km from the coastline. Most individuals (56%) showed moderate to high levels of site fidelity (i.e., part-time or long-term residency) when individual re-sight rates were classified using agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC). These results emphasize the importance of the area to this vulnerable species, particularly the area within the Port of Broome that has been identified within the population’s core range. The pressures associated with coastal development and exposure to vessel traffic, noise, and humans will need to be considered in ongoing management efforts. Analyzing datasets from multiple studies and across time could be beneficial for threatened species where little is known on their ranging patterns and site fidelity. Combined datasets can provide larger sample sizes over an extended period of time, fill knowledge gaps, highlight data limitations, and identify future research needs to be considered with dedicated studies
Design of magnetic materials: CoCrFeAl
Doped Heusler compounds CoCrFeAl with varying Cr to Fe
ratio were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic
structure of the ordered, doped Heusler compound CoCrFeAl
( was calculated using different types of band structure
calculations. The ordered compounds turned out to be ferromagnetic with small
Al magnetic moment being aligned anti-parallel to the 3d transition metal
moments. All compounds show a gap around the Fermi-energy in the minority
bands. The pure compounds exhibit an indirect minority gap, whereas the
ordered, doped compounds exhibit a direct gap. Magnetic circular dichroism
(MCD) in X-ray absorption spectra was measured at the edges of Co,
Fe, and Cr of the pure compounds and the alloy in order to determine
element specific magnetic moments. Calculations and measurements show an
increase of the magnetic moments with increasing iron content. The
experimentally observed reduction of the magnetic moment of Cr can be explained
by Co-Cr site-disorder. The presence of the gap in the minority bands of
CoCrAl can be attributed to the occurrence of pure Co and mixed CrAl
(001)-planes in the structure. It is retained in structures with
different order of the CrAl planes but vanishes in the -structure with
alternating CoCr and CoAl planes.Comment: corrected author lis
Systematic study of the effect of short range correlations on the form factors and densities of s-p and s-d shell nuclei
Analytical expressions of the one- and two-body terms in the cluster
expansion of the charge form factors and densities of the s-p and s-d shell
nuclei with N=Z are derived. They depend on the harmonic oscillator parameter b
and the parameter which originates from the Jastrow correlation
function. These expressions are used for the systematic study of the effect of
short range correlations on the form factors and densities and of the mass
dependence of the parameters b and . These parameters have been
determined by fit to the experimental charge form factors. The inclusion of the
correlations reproduces the experimental charge form factors at the high
momentum transfers (). It is found that while the parameter
is almost constant for the closed shell nuclei, He, O and
Ca, its values are larger (less correlated systems) for the open shell

The genotype of barley cultivars influences multiple aspects of their associated microbiota via differential root exudate secretion
Plant-associated microbes play vital roles in promoting plant growth and health, with plants secreting root exudates into the rhizosphere to attract beneficial microbes. Exudate composition defines the nature of microbial recruitment, with different plant species attracting distinct microbiota to enable optimal adaptation to the soil environment. To more closely examine the relationship between plant genotype and microbial recruitment, we analysed the rhizosphere microbiomes of landrace (Chevallier) and modern (NFC Tipple) barley (Hordeum vulgare) cultivars. Distinct differences were observed between the plant-associated microbiomes of the 2 cultivars, with the plant-growth promoting rhizobacterial genus Pseudomonas substantially more abundant in the Tipple rhizosphere. Striking differences were also observed between the phenotypes of recruited Pseudomonas populations, alongside distinct genotypic clustering by cultivar. Cultivar-driven Pseudomonas selection was driven by root exudate composition, with the greater abundance of hexose sugars secreted from Tipple roots attracting microbes better adapted to growth on these metabolites and vice versa. Cultivar-driven selection also operates at the molecular level, with both gene expression and the abundance of ecologically relevant loci differing between Tipple and Chevallier Pseudomonas isolates. Finally, cultivar-driven selection is important for plant health, with both cultivars showing a distinct preference for microbes selected by their genetic siblings in rhizosphere transplantation assays
