    The relation between student motivation and student grades in physical education: A 3-year investigation

    Enhancing students’ academic engagement is the key element of the educational process; hence, research in this area has focused on understanding the mechanisms that can lead to increased academic engagement. The present study investigated the relation between motivation and grades in physical education (PE) employing a 3-yearlongitudinal design. Three hundred fifty-four Greek high school students participated in the study. Students completed measures of motivation to participate in PE on six occasions; namely, at the start and the end of the school year in the first, second, and third year of junior high school. Students’ PE grades were also recorded at these time points. The results of the multilevel growth models indicated that students’ PE grades increased over the 3years and students had better PE grades at the end of each year than at the beginning of the subsequent year. In general, students and classes with higher levels of controlling motivation achieved lower PE grades, whereas higher levels of autonomous motivation were associated with higher PE grades. These findings provide new insight on the associations between class- and individual-level motivation with objectively assessed achievement in PE

    On the universality of small scale turbulence

    The proposed universality of small scale turbulence is investigated for a set of measurements in a cryogenic free jet with a variation of the Reynolds number (Re) from 8500 to 10^6. The traditional analysis of the statistics of velocity increments by means of structure functions or probability density functions is replaced by a new method which is based on the theory of stochastic Markovian processes. It gives access to a more complete characterization by means of joint probabilities of finding velocity increments at several scales. Based on this more precise method our results call in question the concept of universality.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The 8 bits 100 MS/s Pipeline ADC for the INNOTEP Project – TWEPP-09

    This paper describes the Analog to Digital Converter developed for the front end electronic of the IN2P3 INNOTEP project by the “pole microelectronique Rhone-Auvergne”. (Collaboration between LPC Clermont-Ferrand and IPNL Lyon). This ADC is a 4 stages 2.5 bits per stage pipe line with open loops track and holds and amplifiers. It runs at 100MSamples/s and has 8 bits resolution. The stages used two lines, the gain line and the comparison line, with most operators running in current. The main idea of this current line is to make a first step toward an all in current structure. Currently, this ADC is designed with a 0,35μm SiGe technology

    Mammalian AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a Ser108/Thr132 heterotrimeric enzyme complex (one catalytic subunit a and two regulatory subunits b and g) with a key role as sensor in the cellular energy homeostasis. This function confers AMPK a major role in numerous metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cancer, and explains the progressive interest as a therapeutic target. AMPK is regulated by several mechanisms including indirect and direct activators, which show clear specificity by a particular subunit. We have carried out a series of molecular dynamic simulations of the apo and holo forms of AMPK to gain insight into the mechanism of AMPK activation

    Performance evaluation of parallel manipulators for milling application

    This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of the parallel manipulators for milling of composite materials. For this application the most significant performance measurements, which denote the ability of the manipulator for the machining are defined. In this case, optimal synthesis task is solved as a multicriterion optimization problem with respect to the geometric, kinematic, kinetostatic, elastostostatic, dynamic properties. It is shown that stiffness is an important performance factor. Previous models operate with links approximation and calculate stiffness matrix in the neighborhood of initial point. This is a reason why a new way for stiffness matrix calculation is proposed. This method is illustrated in a concrete industrial problem

    Towards an integrated crowdsourcing definition

    Crowdsourcing is a relatively recent concept that encompasses many practices. This diversity leads to the blurring of the limits of crowdsourcing that may be identified virtually with any type of internet-based collaborative activity, such as co-creation or user innovation. Varying definitions of crowdsourcing exist, and therefore some authors present certain specific examples of crowdsourcing as paradigmatic, while others present the same examples as the opposite. In this article, existing definitions of crowdsourcing are analysed to extract common elements and to establish the basic characteristics of any crowdsourcing initiative.     Continuum solvation models: Dissecting the free energy of solvation

    The most usual self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) continuum models for the description of solvation within the quantum mechanical (QM) framework are reviewed, trying to emphasize their common roots as well as the inherent approximations assumed in the calculation of the free energy of solvation. Particular attention is also paid to the specific features involved in the development of current state-of-the-art QM SCRF continuum models. This is used to discuss the need to maintain a close correspondence between each SCRF formalism and the specific details entailing its parametrization, as well as the need to be cautious in analyzing the balance between electrostatic and non-electrostatic contributions to the solvation free energy between different SCRF models. Finally, special emphasis is given to the post-processing of the free energy of solvation to derive parameters providing a compact picture of the ability of a molecule to interact with different solvents, which can be of particular interest in biopharmaceutical studies

    Adaptación Metodológica al EEES de la asignatura de Técnicas Instrumentales del Grado de Farmacia de la Universidad de Barcelona

    [cast] En el plan de estudios del Grado de Farmacia de la Universidad de Barcelona, la asignatura de Técnicas Instrumentales se imparte en el cuarto semestre, después de haber cursado Física, Fisicoquímica y Química Analítica. El equipo docente de la asignatura está integrado por once profesores que mediante trabajo colaborativo y adecuada coordinación organizan la docencia de la misma que se distribuye en clases teóricas y prácticas. Con el objetivo de adaptar la asignatura a las necesidades del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior, se distribuyó en tres Bloques: I, Técnicas Espectroscópicas; II, Técnicas Electroquímicas y III, Técnicas de Separación. Las actividades teórico-prácticas se han planificado de manera secuencial. Así se inicia el ciclo con las clases teóricas del Bloque I y a continuación de manera paralela se imparten las clases prácticas del Bloque I y las clases teóricas del Bloque II y así sucesivamente, de manera que se termina la docencia con las prácticas del último Bloque. En este proceso adquiere especial relevancia tanto la formación práctica en el laboratorio como el trabajo tutorizado que debe realizar el estudiante. Se realiza un proceso de evaluación continuada teórico/práctico en cada uno de los Bloques. Se da especial relevancia a la adquisición de habilidades y destrezas que permitan una correcta realización de las prácticas de laboratorio, es decir la integración de los contenidos específicos a la aplicación de las diferentes técnicas instrumentales, la resolución de los cálculos numéricos y la interpretación de los resultados. [eng] In the new syllabus of the Pharmacy degree at the University of Barcelona, the subject Analytical Techniques is taught at the fourth semester, after the subjects Physics, Physical chemistry and Analytical chemistry. The teaching team of this subject is integrated by eleven teachers that by means of collaborative work and an appropriate coordination, organize the docent activity into practical and theoretical classes. With the aim to adapt this subject to the requirements of the European space for higher education, it has been designed in three blocs: I. Spectroscopic techniques, II. Electrochemical techniques and, III. Separation techniques, by planning the theoretical and practical activities in a sequential manner. Therefore, the cycle begins with the theory of the first bloc followed with the practice corresponding to it together with the theory of the second bloc, and so on. The course ends with the practical part of the third bloc. In this process is of great importance the tutorial work that the student should do. The evaluation of the theory and of the practical part of each bloc is done in a continuous way paying special focus on the acquisition of abilities and handiness that will allow the correct performance in the laboratory. In summary, the integration of the specific contents to the application of the different instrumental techniques, the resolution of the numerical calculations and the interpretation of the results
