Towards a Flexible Deep Learning Method for Automatic Detection of Clinically Relevant Multi-Modal Events in the Polysomnogram
Much attention has been given to automatic sleep staging algorithms in past
years, but the detection of discrete events in sleep studies is also crucial
for precise characterization of sleep patterns and possible diagnosis of sleep
disorders. We propose here a deep learning model for automatic detection and
annotation of arousals and leg movements. Both of these are commonly seen
during normal sleep, while an excessive amount of either is linked to disrupted
sleep patterns, excessive daytime sleepiness impacting quality of life, and
various sleep disorders. Our model was trained on 1,485 subjects and tested on
1,000 separate recordings of sleep. We tested two different experimental setups
and found optimal arousal detection was attained by including a recurrent
neural network module in our default model with a dynamic default event window
(F1 = 0.75), while optimal leg movement detection was attained using a static
event window (F1 = 0.65). Our work show promise while still allowing for
improvements. Specifically, future research will explore the proposed model as
a general-purpose sleep analysis model.Comment: Accepted for publication in 41st International Engineering in

Function of retinoic acid receptors during embryonic development
Retinoids, the active metabolites of vitamin A, regulate complex gene networks involved in vertebrate morphogenesis, growth, cellular differentiation and homeostasis. Studies performed in vitro, using either acellular systems or transfected cells, have shown that retinoid actions are mediated through heterodimers between the RAR and RXR nuclear receptors. However, in vitro studies indicate what is possible, but not necessarily what is actually occurring in vivo, because they are performed under non-physiological conditions. Therefore, genetic approaches in the animal have been be used to determine the physiological functions of retinoid receptors. Homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells has been used to generate germline null mutations of the RAR- and RXR-coding genes in the mouse. As reviewed here, the generation of such germline mutations, combined with pharmacological approaches to block the RA signalling pathway, has provided genetic evidence that RAR/RXR heterodimers are indeed the functional units transducing the RA signal during prenatal development. However, due to (i) the complexity in “hormonal” signalling through transduction by the multiple RARs and RXRs, (ii) the functional redundancies (possibly artefactually generated by the mutations) within receptor isotypes belonging to a given family, and (iii) in utero or early postnatal lethality of certain germline null mutations, these genetic studies have failed to reveal all the physiological functions of RARs and RXRs, notably in adults. Spatio-temporally-controlled somatic mutations generated in given cell types/tissues and at chosen times during postnatal life, will be required to reveal all the functions of RAR and RXR throughout the lifetime of the mouse
Hybridizing Lead-Acid Batteries with Supercapacitors: A Methodology
Hybridizing a lead–acid battery energy storage system (ESS) with supercapacitors is a promising solution to cope with the increased battery degradation in standalone microgrids that suffer from irregular electricity profiles. There are many studies in the literature on such hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), usually examining the various hybridization aspects separately. This paper provides a holistic look at the design of an HESS. A new control scheme is proposed that applies power filtering to smooth out the battery profile, while strictly adhering to the supercapacitors’ voltage limits. A new lead–acid battery model is introduced, which accounts for the combined effects of a microcycle’s depth of discharge (DoD) and battery temperature, usually considered separately in the literature. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis on the thermal parameters and an economic analysis were performed using a 90-day electricity profile from an actual DC microgrid in India to infer the hybridization benefit. The results show that the hybridization is beneficial mainly at poor thermal conditions and highlight the need for a battery degradation model that considers both the DoD effect with microcycle resolution and temperate impact to accurately assess the gain from such a hybridization
New electronic orderings observed in cobaltates under the influence of misfit periodicities
We study with ARPES the electronic structure of CoO2 slabs, stacked with
rock-salt (RS) layers exhibiting a different (misfit) periodicity. Fermi
Surfaces (FS) in phases with different doping and/or periodicities reveal the
influence of the RS potential on the electronic structure. We show that these
RS potentials are well ordered, even in incommensurate phases, where STM images
reveal broad stripes with width as large as 80\AA. The anomalous evolution of
the FS area at low dopings is consistent with the localization of a fraction of
the electrons. We propose that this is a new form of electronic ordering,
induced by the potential of the stacked layers (RS or Na in NaxCoO2) when the
FS becomes smaller than the Brillouin Zone of the stacked structure
TEMPERATURE AND LEVEL DENSITY PARAMETER OF EVAPORATION RESIDUES PRODUCED IN THE REACTION 165Ho + 600 MeV 20Ne
Evaporative and preequilibrium neutrons emitted from evaporation residues in the reaction Ho + 600 MeV neon are exploited to deduce the thermal excitation energy E* and temperature T of the residues. From these quantities the level density parameter is deduced at a temperature of 4.1 MeV
SICANE: a Detector Array for the Measurement of Nuclear Recoil Quenching Factors using Monoenergetic Neutron Beam
SICANE is a neutron scattering multidetector facility for the determination
of the quenching factor (ratio of the response to nuclear recoils and to
electrons) of cryogenic detectors used in direct WIMP searches. Well collimated
monoenergetic neutron beams are obtained with inverse (p,n) reactions. The
facility is described, and results obtained for the quenching factors of
scintillation in NaI(Tl) and of heat and ionization in Ge are presented.Comment: 30 pages, Latex, 11 figures. Submitted to NIM
Assessment of digital image correlation measurement errors: methodology and results
Optical full-field measurement methods such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are increasingly used in the field of experimental mechanics, but they still suffer from a lack of information about their metrological performances. To assess the performance of DIC techniques and give some practical rules for users, a collaborative work has been carried out by the Workgroup “Metrology” of the French CNRS research network 2519 “MCIMS (Mesures de Champs et Identification en Mécanique des Solides / Full-field measurement and identification in solid mechanics, http://www.ifma.fr/lami/gdr2519)”. A methodology is proposed to assess the metrological performances of the image processing algorithms that constitute their main component, the knowledge of which being required for a global assessment of the whole measurement system. The study is based on displacement error assessment from synthetic speckle images. Series of synthetic reference and deformed images with random patterns have been generated, assuming a sinusoidal displacement field with various frequencies and amplitudes. Displacements are evaluated by several DIC packages based on various formulations and used in the French community. Evaluated displacements are compared with the exact imposed values and errors are statistically analyzed. Results show general trends rather independent of the implementations but strongly correlated with the assumptions of the underlying algorithms. Various error regimes are identified, for which the dependence of the uncertainty with the parameters of the algorithms, such as subset size, gray level interpolation or shape functions, is discussed
