It takes two to tango: Co-creation for sustainable development in the food retailing sector

    Get PDF
Sustainable development (SD) issues are one of the top concerns of contemporary societies and whose problems are a responsibility shared by all countries, individuals, governments and businesses. The environmental impacts derived from current production and consumption habits are not sustainable for the planet and more than a quarter of these can be blamed on the food industry. If firm measures are not put into practice quickly, the future of upcoming generations will be compromised. The normalization of integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as an embedded part of businesses’ strategy has undoubtedly help to raise awareness on the importance of SD, but companies cannot succeed alone. Consumers are also a key part on the process of achieving SD and without them, it will not be possible to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the United Nations. The concept of Consumer Social Responsibility (CnSR) is thus introduced not only as a way of holding consumers responsible in the battle for SD too, but also to understand the drivers of consumers when it comes to sustainable food purchasing. Finally, Co-creation is suggested as a solution to connect retailers and consumers so that, together, they can pursuit SD. As to access the research question, a qualitative study was performed with interviews including both consumers and retailers and it was concluded that there is still a lot of work that must be done by both parts.

The main objective of this study is to test the mediating effect of perceived internal employability on the relationship between organisational practices of competences development and affective commitment, and also to test the moderating effect of different generations in this mediation. The sample has 302 participants, who are employees in several organisations based in Portuguese territory. We verified the mediating effect of the employability perception in the relationship between organisational practices of competences development (individualised support and functional rotation) and affective commitment. Regarding the moderating effect of the generations, this effect was verified in the relationship between the organisational competences development practices and the affective commitment in the liaison between the organisational practices of competences development and the perception of internal employability and in the connection between the perception of internal employability and affective commitment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to explore the serial mediation effect of perceived internal employability and affective commitment in the relationship between the organisational practices of competences development and turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology was quantitative and is based on a survey with a sample of 313 participants, all of whom were employed in several organisations located in Portugal. Findings – A significant and negative effect of organisational practices of competences development, perceived internal employability and affective commitment on turnover intentions was verified. A total serial mediation effect was also found from perceived internal employability and affective commitment in the relationship between organisational practices of competences development (i.e., training, individualised support and functional rotation) and turnover intentions. Practical implications – These practices should be developed by leaders of organisations in order that employees feel that the organisation is investing in their development, which can lead to an increase in their emotional attachment towards the organisation and consequently increase their desire to stay in the organisation. Originality/value – This study makes two important contributions. First, it confirms the existence of a significant and negative relationship between perceived internal employability and turnover intentions. Second, it proves the existence of a total serial mediation effect of perceived internal employability and affective commitment in the relationship between organisational practices of competences development and turnover intentions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Are farm to fork strategy goals reasonable and achievable? State of the art of Península de Setubal’s winegrowers

    Get PDF
The European Union’s “farm to fork” strategy sets out several objectives to be achieved by farmers, who, among others, relate to increasing biodiversity, protecting soils and reducing the use of pesticides. The use of pesticides in 235 winegrowers in the Palmela region was evaluated between 2016 and 2021. To support some of the answers, a socio-economic survey was also carried out. The data analysed included the number of treatments, the dosages used, compliance with the pre-harvest interval, the reason why winegrowers performed phytosanitary treatment and how they chose a pesticide. In addition, residue analyses were carried out at the entrance of the grapes into the winery to assess whether the MRL was exceeded and whether were not authorised pesticides were used in the vine. For each year, it was found that, on average, farmers spray seven times, although the trend was to decrease and the most used pesticide belong to groups 3 (Triazol), according to the FRAC Codes. It was concluded that fear of diseases and pests and “empirical experience” sometimes go beyond knowledge and technology. In addition, the weak valorisation of grapes and discouragement with the implementation of some poorly reported strategies are factors that fuel the concern about the difficulty in achieving the goals

Processos de mudança como possibilidade de desenvolvimento profissional : uma narração biográfica

    Get PDF
Professional development is a process that involves learning, change and professional growth. The professional development of teachers is understood to be an individual and collective process, which takes place in the teacher’s workplace, the school, and that contributes to the development of their professional skills, through both formal and informal experiences, during a long-term process, and in which different kinds of opportunities and experiences occur which promote the teacher’s growth and development (Marcelo, 2009). The following report aims to highlight the relevance and the implications of the openness to a change of practices, of the processes leading to the emergence of innovation and the appearance of a collaborative culture within context of professional development. In a style of a biographical narrative, a report was made of significant professional experiences, that occurred in a stage of a professional career following the change from a private school, with seventy-five years of existence, to a new school, also privately owned, but newly founded and that bets on the ability to innovate and take on an identity of its own, based on the legacy of an Ignatian pedagogy. Personal experience and professional integration in this new school’s board of directors is crucial when it comes to characterizing this professional career stage and is proving to be a remarkable professional development experience. The possibility of direct participation in the planning of the means to enable the school to adapt to the implementation of new strategies for curriculum development and other innovative aspects of the practice of teaching and school management, the personal involvement within the emergence of a collaborative culture, the monitoring and exchange of experiences with teachers, resulting in more confidence and a reduction of uncertainties, reveals itself to be memorable at this stage of a professional career, through the involvement, as a teacher, in different cognitive, affective and relational aspects of this profession. The meeting of conditions conducive to the creation and sustainability of an innovative work environment, both challenging and productive identifies itself as an opportunity to cultivate knowledge and professional growth

Genomic diversity of Oenococcus oeni from different winemaking regions of Portugal

    Get PDF
Oenococcus oeni is an alcohol-tolerant, acidophilic lactic acid bacterium that plays an important role in the elaboration of wine. It is often added as a starter culture to carry out malolactic conversion. Given the economic importance of this reaction, the taxonomic structure of this species has been studied in detail. In the present work, phenotypic and molecular approaches were used to identify 121 lactic acid bacteria strains isolated from the wines of three winemaking regions of Portugal. The strains were differentiated at the genomic level by M13-PCR fingerprinting. Twenty-seven genomic clusters represented by two or more isolates and 21 single-member clusters, based on an 85% similarity level, were recognized by hierarchic numerical analysis. M13-PCR fingerprinting patterns revealed a high level of intraspecific genomic diversity in O. oeni. Moreover, this diversity could be partitioned according to the geographical origin of the isolates. Thus, M13-PCR fingerprint analysis may be an appropriate methodology to study the O. oeni ecology of wine during malolactic fermentation as well as to trace new malolactic starter cultures and evaluate their dominance over the native microbiota

Through the lens of workers’ motivation: does it relate to work–family relationship perceptions?

    Get PDF
Workers’ motivations and the work–family relationship are two subjects that have been capturing the attention of researchers and practitioners. However, to date, little is known about the link between the two subjects. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the relationships among each type of motivation conceptualized in self-determination theory and work–family conflict, work–family enrichment, and work–family balance. In addition, the current study intended to investigate the relationships among work–family conflict, work–family enrichment, and Work–family balance. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. To test the hypotheses, the PROCESS macro was used. The results suggested that intrinsic motivation is negatively associated with work–family conflict and positively associated with work–family enrichment and work–family balance. Additionally, identified regulations seem to be positively associated with work–family enrichment and work–family balance. However, contrary to expectations, this study revealed a positive relationship between introjected regulation and work–family enrichment and work–family balance. Concerning external regulation (material and social) and amotivation, globally, the findings were consistent with the hypotheses, i.e., the higher the external regulation and amotivation, the higher work–family conflict and the lower the work–family enrichment and work–family balance. Moreover, the higher the work–family conflict, the lower the work–family balance, and the higher the work–family enrichment, the higher the work–family balance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Development of Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity after Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury Is Accompanied by Time-Dependent Changes in Lumbosacral Expression of Axonal Growth Regulators

Thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in urinary dysfunction, which majorly affects the quality of life of SCI patients. Abnormal sprouting of lumbosacral bladder afferents plays a crucial role in this condition. Underlying mechanisms may include changes in expression of regulators of axonal growth, including chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans (CSPGs), myelin-associated inhibitors (MAIs) and repulsive guidance molecules, known to be upregulated at the injury site post SCI. Here, we confirmed lumbosacral upregulation of the growth-associated protein GAP43 in SCI animals with bladder dysfunction, indicating the occurrence of axonal sprouting. Neurocan and Phosphacan (CSPGs), as well as Nogo-A (MAI), at the same spinal segments were upregulated 7 days post injury (dpi) but returned to baseline values 28 dpi. In turn, qPCR analysis of the mRNA levels for receptors of those repulsive molecules in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons showed a time-dependent decrease in receptor expression. In vitro assays with DRG neurons from SCI rats demonstrated that exposure to high levels of NGF downregulated the expression of some, but not all, receptors for those regulators of axonal growth. The present results, therefore, show significant molecular changes at the lumbosacral cord and DRGs after thoracic lesion, likely critically involved in neuroplastic events leading to urinary impairment
