    3D printing of weft knitted textile based structures by selective laser sintering of nylon powder

    3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing whereby the building up of layers of material creates objects. The selective laser sintering process (SLS) uses a laser beam to sinter powdered material to create objects. This paper builds upon previous research into 3D printed textile based material exploring the use of SLS using nylon powder to create flexible weft knitted structures. The results show the potential to print flexible textile based structures that exhibit the properties of traditional knitted textile structures along with the mechanical properties of the material used, whilst describing the challenges regarding fineness of printing resolution. The conclusion highlights the potential future development and application of such pieces

    Applying the framework for culturally responsive teaching to explore the adaptations that teach first beginning teachers use to meet the needs of their pupils in school

    Previous research has shown that beginning teachers are capable of adapting their practice to the needs of ethnically diverse pupils. This paper investigates the possibility that such teachers were developing their practice into what I have termed culturally adaptive teaching. A variety of methods were used to collect qualitative data that focused on the perspectives of teachers in schools across Yorkshire and Humberside, (UK) over the course of an academic year. The framework for culturally responsive teaching (CRT) was used as a lens through which to analyse the data collected. It enabled findings to emerge that took the framework beyond that of CRT, to one of culturally adaptive teaching. Teachers continually adapted their practice, in terms of cultural sensitivity, to better meet the needs of their pupils. If we can apply this framework and support beginning teachers to help them understand issues of cultural diversity in the classroom, we might be able to engender a real systematic change in teaching for the benefit of pupils

    Autori u radu analiziraju druơtveno-političke prilike unutar Hrvatskoga Kraljevstva kroz prizmu političke moći i utjecaja protonotara Jurja Plemića u razdoblju od 1690. do 1713. godine, odnosno u razdoblju kada je Juraj Plemić obavljao funkciju kraljevinskoga protonotara. Ističući ovlasti protonotarske funkcije kao i utjecaj osobe koja je obnaơala ovu funkciju, autori postavljaju tezu da je protonotar Juraj Plemić bio ključna politička osoba unutar hrvatskoga staleơkog svijeta na prijelazu sa 17. na 18. stoljeće i uvelike utjecao na neke od najznačajnijih staleơkih odluka nastalih unutar institucije Hrvatskoga sabora u navedenom razdoblju.This article analyses the socio-political circumstances within the Kingdom of Croatia between 1690 and 1713, focusing on Prothonotary Juraj Plemić and his political influence as a case study, to illustrate the main thesis that the kingdom’s rights enabled notaries, nobility judges, vicecomites, treasurers, prothonotaries and vice-bans to create a strong political system and to have a monopoly over decision-making in the Croatian Diet, the Sabor, in the aforementioned period. The prothonotary’s political potential and power are explained by the authorities and privileges of prothonotary function as well as the “networking” of parliamentary officials, all of whom belonged to the middle and lower nobility. Consequently, this estate became the privileged negotiation partners within the Kingdom of Croatia for the royal court circles, whereas the magnates’ political activity was severely curtailed. The story of the Samobor copper mine, “the 1708 incident” and the cooperation between the prothonotary and the bishop of Zagreb in legitimising the succession of Habsburg female line all best illustrate the aforementioned influences and “networking” of parliamentary officials, and prove that Prothonotary Plemić was the key political figure of the Croatian estates at the turn of the seventeenth and the eighteenth century. The article emphasises the need for further research into the parliamentary functions and the persons who performed these offices, in order to create new interpretations of early modern Croatian history

    Weber and church governance: religious practice and economic activity

    The debate about the relationship between religion and economic activity in the wake of Weber has been cast largely in terms of belief and values. This article suggests an alternative focus on practice. It argues that taken for granted practices of church governance formed to-hand resources for the organization of economic activity. The argument is developed through an examination of the historical development of church governance practices in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, with particular emphasis on the way in which theological belief gave rise to practices of accountability and record keeping. In turn such practices contributed to a ‘culture of organization’ which had implications for economic activity. A focus on governance practices can help to illuminate enduring patterns of difference in the organization of economic activity

    The Migration State in the Global South: Nationalizing, Developmental and Neoliberal Models of Migration Management

    How do states in the Global South manage cross-border migration? This article identifies Hollifield’s “migration state” as a useful tool for comparative analysis yet notes that in its current version the concept is limited, given its focus on economic immigration in advanced liberal democracies. We suggest a framework for extending the “migration state” concept by introducing a typology of nationalizing, developmental, and neoliberal migration management regimes. The article explains each type and provides illustrative examples drawn from a range of case studies. To conclude, it discusses the implications of this analysis for comparative migration research, including the additional light it sheds on the migration management policies of states in the Global North

    The impact of the prevent duty on schools: a review of the evidence

    The UK has emerged as an influential global player in developing policy to counter violent extremism, and therefore it is important to consider the emerging evidence about the impact of this policy in education. The Prevent Duty came into force in the UK in 2015, placing a legal responsibility on schools and teachers to implement anti-terrorist legislation and prevent young people from being drawn into extremism or radicalisation. This article reviews all of the material based on empirical studies in England involving school teachers and students published between 2015 (when the Duty was introduced) and the beginning of 2019 (27 articles and reports in total) to consider the impact of the policy on schools. The key themes emerging from our analysis of this evidence base are related (1) to the ways the policy is interpreted within Islamophobic discourses, (2) the emergence of Britishness as a key feature of fundamental British values, and (3) the implications of framing Prevent as a safeguarding issue. We argue that the evidence gives support to those who have been critical of the Prevent Duty in schools, and that it seems to be generating a number of unintended and negative side effects. However, the evidence also illustrates how teachers have agency in relation to the policy, and may thus be able to enact the policy in ways which reduce some of the most harmful effects
