    Evaluation of chemical compounds for induction of male sterility in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

    The short-list of eleven chemical hybridizing agents (CHAs) showing 98% or more induction of male sterility were identified following application at the pre-meiotic stage of wheat. Among ethyl oxanilates, 4-fluoro (CHA A1), 4-bromo (CHA A2), 4-trifluoromethyl (CHA A5), and 4-cyano (CHA A3) derivatives; and among pyridones, 4-chloro (CHA B3), 4-fluoro (CHA B1), 4-bromo (CHA B2), and 4-trifluoromethyl (CHA B6) derivatives were the most promising. These agents showed no adverse effects on plant growth and yield. Ethyl 4-fluoro oxanilate (CHA A1) was tested on 29 wheat genotypes at 1500 ppm and induced 99.76±0.37% male sterility. Ethyl 4-fluoro oxanilate residues were non-detectable in grain and husk and thus appeared to have no lasting residue effects

    Diseases chronicles do not encephalopathies in the elderly: knowledges and actions from community health agents

    Objective: To analyze the knowledge and actions performed by Community Health Agents (CHA), related to chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) in elderly patients. Method: Qualitative and descriptive research. The data collection occurred through interviews with 20 ACS. The information was analyzed following the steps of content analysis. Results: The data converged for the construction of two categories. One is about knowledge for CHA performance, and the other the educative actions performed by CHA with the elderly population. Final considerations: They were identified limitations in the knowledge and actions developed by CHA regarding the CNCD in elderly, restricting the care concerning diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. This condition reflects in the work of these professionals, but it can be modified with educational actions intended to CHA, for which they can qualify their practices along with the elderly population

    Boosting the precision of virtual call integrity protection with partial pointer analysis for C++

We present, Vip, an approach to boosting the precision of Virtual call Integrity Protection for large-scale real-world C++ programs (e.g., Chrome) by using pointer analysis for the first time. Vip introduces two new techniques: (1) a sound and scalable partial pointer analysis for discovering statically the sets of legitimate targets at virtual callsites from separately compiled C++ modules and (2) a lightweight instrumentation technique for performing (virtual call) integrity checks at runtime. Vip raises the bar against vtable hijacking attacks by providing stronger security guarantees than the CHA-based approach with comparable performance overhead. Vip is implemented in LLVM-3.8.0 and evaluated using SPEC programs and Chrome. Statically, Vip protects virtual calls more effectively than CHA by significantly reducing the sets of legitimate targets permitted at 20.3% of the virtual callsites per program, on average. Dynamically, Vip incurs an average (maximum) instrumentation overhead of 0.7% (3.3%), making it practically deployable as part of a compiler tool chain

    En el presente artículo se lleva a cabo un análisis global y exhaustivo sobre la dependencia y la esclavitud en la correspondencia de Jerónimo utilizando la metodología desarrollada en el CHA de Besançon y ya empleada por M. Garrido para la obra de Marcial y D. Plácido para Tucídides. Dicho análisis permite estudiar el lugar que ocupa el esclavo en el pensamiento del padre de la Iglesia, así como sistematizar la forma en la que aparece reflejado. Por último se explica la ornamentación retórica del discurso basada en los exempla y las metáforas que enlazan la dependencia divina con la humana.__________________________________Cet article presente une analyse globale et exhaustive de la dépendence et de l'esclavage dans la Correspondance de Jerome, utilizant la méth.ode entreprise dans le CHA de Besancon et déjà employée par M.     Evaluation of SOVAT: An OLAP-GIS decision support system for community health assessment data analysis

    Background. Data analysis in community health assessment (CHA) involves the collection, integration, and analysis of large numerical and spatial data sets in order to identify health priorities. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) enable for management and analysis using spatial data, but have limitations in performing analysis of numerical data because of its traditional database architecture. On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is a multidimensional datawarehouse designed to facilitate querying of large numerical data. Coupling the spatial capabilities of GIS with the numerical analysis of OLAP, might enhance CHA data analysis. OLAP-GIS systems have been developed by university researchers and corporations, yet their potential for CHA data analysis is not well understood. To evaluate the potential of an OLAP-GIS decision support system for CHA problem solving, we compared OLAP-GIS to the standard information technology (IT) currently used by many public health professionals. Methods. SOVAT, an OLAP-GIS decision support system developed at the University of Pittsburgh, was compared against current IT for data analysis for CHA. For this study, current IT was considered the combined use of SPSS and GIS ("SPSS-GIS"). Graduate students, researchers, and faculty in the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh were recruited. Each round consisted of: an instructional video of the system being evaluated, two practice tasks, five assessment tasks, and one post-study questionnaire. Objective and subjective measurement included: task completion time, success in answering the tasks, and system satisfaction. Results. Thirteen individuals participated. Inferential statistics were analyzed using linear mixed model analysis. SOVAT was statistically significant (α = .01) from SPSS-GIS for satisfaction and time (p < .002). Descriptive results indicated that participants had greater success in answering the tasks when using SOVAT as compared to SPSS-GIS. Conclusion. Using SOVAT, tasks were completed more efficiently, with a higher rate of success, and with greater satisfaction, than the combined use of SPSS and GIS. The results from this study indicate a potential for OLAP-GIS decision support systems as a valuable tool for CHA data analysis. © 2008 Scotch et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    Spatial and multidimensional visualization of Indonesia's village health statistics

    Background: A community health assessment (CHA) is used to identify and address health issues in a given population. Effective CHA requires timely and comprehensive information from a wide variety of sources, such as: socio-economic data, disease surveillance, healthcare utilization, environmental data, and health resource allocation. Indonesia is a developing country with 235 million inhabitants over 13,000 islands. There are significant barriers to conducting CHA in developing countries like Indonesia, such as the high cost of computing resources and the lack of computing skills necessary to support such an assessment. At the University of Pittsburgh, we have developed the Spatial OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) Visualization and Analysis Tool (SOVAT) for performing CHA. SOVAT combines Geographic Information System (GIS) technology along with an advanced multidimensional data warehouse structure to facilitate analysis of large, disparate health, environmental, population, and spatial data. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of SOVAT for facilitating CHA among developing countries by using health, population, healthcare resources, and spatial data from Indonesia for use in two CHA cases studies. Results: Bureau of Statistics administered data sets from the Indonesian Census, and the Indonesian village statistics, were used in the case studies. The data consisted of: healthcare resources (number of healthcare professionals and facilities), population (census), morbidity and mortality, and spatial (GIS-formatted) information. The data was formatted, combined, and populated into SOVAT for CHA use. Case study 1 involves the distribution of healthcare professionals in Indonesia, while case study 2 involves malaria mortality. Screen shots are shown for both cases. The results for the CHA were retrieved in seconds and presented through the geospatial and numerical SOVAT interface. Conclusion: The case studies show the potential of spatial and multidimensional analysis using SOVAT for community health assessment in developing countries. Since SOVAT is based primarily on open-source components and can be deployed using small personal computers, it is cost-effective for developing countries. Also, combining the strength in analysis and the ease of use makes tools like SOVAT ideal for healthcare professionals without extensive computer skills. © 2008 Parmanto et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
