Observational Constraints on the Ages of Molecular Clouds and the Star-Formation Timescale: Ambipolar-Diffusion--Controlled or Turbulence-Induced Star Formation?
We revisit the problem of the star formation timescale and the ages of
molecular clouds. The apparent overabundance of star-forming molecular clouds
over clouds without active star formation has been thought to indicate that
molecular clouds are "short-lived" and that star formation is "rapid". We show
that this statistical argument lacks self-consistency and, even within the
rapid star-formation scenario, implies cloud lifetimes of approximately 10 Myr.
We discuss additional observational evidence from external galaxies that
indicate lifetimes of molecular clouds and a timescale of star formation of
approximately 10 Myr . These long cloud lifetimes in conjunction with the rapid
(approximately 1 Myr) decay of supersonic turbulence present severe
difficulties for the scenario of turbulence-controlled star formation. By
contrast, we show that all 31 existing observations of objects for which the
linewidth, the size, and the magnetic field strength have been reliably
measured are in excellent quantitative agreement with the predictions of the
ambipolar-diffusion theory. Within the ambipolar-diffusion-controlled star
formation theory the linewidths may be attributed to large-scale non-radial
cloud oscillations (essentially standing large-amplitude, long-wavelength
Alfven waves), and the predicted relation between the linewidth, the size, and
the magnetic field is a natural consequence of magnetic support of

HIV-assoziiertes Lymphom — ungewöhnliche Ursache einer pathologischen Unterkieferfraktur: Fallbericht und Behandlungsoptionen bei Immundefizienz
Zusammenfassung: Das diffuse großzellige B-Zell-Lymphom (DGBZL) bleibt trotz der Einführung der kombinierten antiviralen Therapie (HAART) ein häufiger maligner Tumor bei HIV-infizierten Patienten. Über 50% dieser Lymphome verlaufen extranodal, davon manifestiert sich die Hälfte in der Kopf-Hals-Region. Bei oralen Manifestationen zählen Schmerzen, Schwellung, Parästhesien und Zahnlockerungen zu den ersten klinischen Symptomen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird über einen 52-jährigen Patienten mit einer Fraktur im linken Kieferwinkelbereich bei bekannter HIV-Infektion berichtet. Eine primäre osteosynthetische Versorgung brachte diese nicht zur Ausheilung. Die anlässlich der Revision durchgeführte Biopsie ergab die Diagnose eines primären Lymphoms im Unterkiefer. Eine Konsolidierung der Defektfraktur trat erst nach dessen Vollremission und nachfolgender Rekonstruktion mit freiem kortikospongiösem Beckenkammtransplantat auf. Anhand dieser Kasuistik werden nach Darstellung des Krankheitsbildes die Therapieoptionen bei Unterkieferfrakturen im Rahmen einer Immundefizienz vor dem Hintergrund der verfügbaren Literatur diskutier
The Initial Core Mass Function due to Ambipolar Diffusion in Molecular Clouds
We show that the ambipolar-diffusion--initiated fragmentation of molecular
clouds leads simply and naturally to an initial core mass function (CMF) which
is very similar to the initial stellar mass function (IMF) and in excellent
agreement with existing observations. This agreement is robust provided that
the three (input) free parameters remain within their range of values suggested

Precision Measurement of the First Ionization Potential of Nobelium
One of the most important atomic properties governing an element’s chemical behavior is the energy required to remove its least-bound electron, referred to as the first ionization potential. For the heaviest elements, this fundamental quantity is strongly influenced by relativistic effects which lead to unique chemical properties. Laser spectroscopy on an atom-at-a-time scale was developed and applied to probe the optical spectrum of neutral nobelium near the ionization threshold. The first ionization potential of nobelium is determined here with a very high precision from the convergence of measured Rydberg series to be 6.626   21 ± 0.000   05     eV . This work provides a stringent benchmark for state-of-the-art many-body atomic modeling that considers relativistic and quantum electrodynamic effects and paves the way for high-precision measurements of atomic properties of elements only available from heavy-ion accelerator facilities
An empirical study using permutation-based resampling in meta-regression
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In meta-regression, as the number of trials in the analyses decreases, the risk of false positives or false negatives increases. This is partly due to the assumption of normality that may not hold in small samples. Creation of a distribution from the observed trials using permutation methods to calculate <it>P </it>values may allow for less spurious findings. Permutation has not been empirically tested in meta-regression. The objective of this study was to perform an empirical investigation to explore the differences in results for meta-analyses on a small number of trials using standard large sample approaches verses permutation-based methods for meta-regression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We isolated a sample of randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) for interventions that have a small number of trials (herbal medicine trials). Trials were then grouped by herbal species and condition and assessed for methodological quality using the Jadad scale, and data were extracted for each outcome. Finally, we performed meta-analyses on the primary outcome of each group of trials and meta-regression for methodological quality subgroups within each meta-analysis. We used large sample methods and permutation methods in our meta-regression modeling. We then compared final models and final <it>P </it>values between methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We collected 110 trials across 5 intervention/outcome pairings and 5 to 10 trials per covariate. When applying large sample methods and permutation-based methods in our backwards stepwise regression the covariates in the final models were identical in all cases. The <it>P </it>values for the covariates in the final model were larger in 78% (7/9) of the cases for permutation and identical for 22% (2/9) of the cases.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We present empirical evidence that permutation-based resampling may not change final models when using backwards stepwise regression, but may increase <it>P </it>values in meta-regression of multiple covariates for relatively small amount of trials.</p
A compilation of charged-particle induced thermonuclear reaction rates
Low-energy cross section data for 86 charged-particle induced reactions involving light (1 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 14), mostly stable, nuclei are compiled. The corresponding Maxwellian-averaged thermonuclear reaction rates of relevance in astrophysical plasmas at temperatures in the range from 10(6) K to 10(10) K are calculated. These evaluations assume either that the target nuclei are in their ground state, or that the target states are thermally populated following a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, except in some cases involving isomeric states. Adopted values complemented with lower and upper limits of the rates are presented in tabular form. Analytical approximations to the adopted rates, as well as to the inverse/direct rate ratios, are provided. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
