Measuring Impression Management in Male Leaders of Color

    Get PDF
Companies’ survival depends on their ability to attract and maintain diverse leaders. This research examines the tactics used by male leaders of color to secure management positions. The Jones and Pittman’s Impression Management Taxonomy (1982) was used to explore the impression management phenomenon and the constructs of self-promotion, ingratiation, exemplification, intimidation, and supplication as they relate to gender and ethnicity. The statistical analysis was conducted on 240 valid responses where an exploratory factor analysis and a MANOVA provided insight on the variables’ relationships. The findings convey Black/African–American and Latinos scored similarly in their use of supplication versus White male leaders, which indicates that male leaders of color are more likely to be modest in their approach. Additionally, to some extent, all ethnicities with the exception of Asians tended to use the intimidation tactic in the workplace. While diversity is a growing trend in the workplace, this study confirms that it is imperative to have healthy conversations about ethnicity and gender in professional settings

HST Observations of the Serendipitous X-ray Companion to Mrk 273: Cluster at z=0.46?

We have used HST I-band images to identify Mrk 273X, the very unusual high-redshift X-ray-luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy found by ROSAT in the same field-of-view as Mrk 273. We have measured the photometric properties of Mrk 273X and have also analyzed the luminosity distribution of the faint galaxy population seen in the HST image. The luminosity of the galaxy and the properties of the surrounding environment suggest that Mrk 273X is the brightest galaxy in a relatively poor cluster at a redshift near 0.46. Its off-center location in the cluster and the presence of other galaxy groupings in the HST image may indicate that this is a dynamically young cluster on the verge of merging with its neighboring clusters. We find that Mrk 273X is a bright featureless elliptical galaxy with no evidence for a disk. It follows the de Vaucouleurs (r^{1/4}) surface brightness law very well over a range of 8 magnitudes. Though the surface brightness profile does not appear to be dominated by the AGN, the galaxy has very blue colors that do appear to be produced by the AGN. Mrk 273X is most similar to the IC 5063 class of active galaxies --- a hybrid Sy 2 / powerful radio galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 8 pages, including 4 postscript figures. Genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi populations and parasite transmission dynamics have been well documented throughout the Americas, but few studies have been conducted in the Gran Chaco ecoregion, one of the most highly endemic areas for Chagas disease, caused by T. cruzi. In this study, we assessed the distribution of T. cruzi lineages (identified by PCR strategies) in Triatoma infestans, domestic dogs, cats, humans and sylvatic mammals from two neighbouring rural areas with different histories of transmission and vector control in northern Argentina. Lineage II predominated amongst the 99 isolates characterised and lineage I amongst the six isolates obtained from sylvatic mammals. T. cruzi lineage IIe predominated in domestic habitats; it was found in 87% of 54 isolates from Tr. infestans, in 82% of 33 isolates from dogs, and in the four cats found infected. Domestic and sylvatic cycles overlapped in the study area in the late 1980s, when intense domestic transmission occurred, and still overlap marginally. The introduction of T. cruzi from sylvatic into domestic habitats is likely to occur very rarely in the current epidemiological context. The household distribution of T. cruzi lineages showed that Tr. infestans, dogs and cats from a given house compound shared the same parasite lineage in most cases. Based on molecular evidence, this result lends further support to the importance of dogs and cats as domestic reservoir hosts of T. cruzi. We believe that in Argentina, this is the first time that lineage IIc has been isolated from naturally infected domestic dogs and Tr. infestans.Fil: Cardinal, Marta Victoria. The present study analyzes the professional preferences in students of four engineering careers from a private university in Arequipa City, in relation to some aspects of professional identity. To that end, we took a sample of 422 students of Industrial Engineering, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computing Science. We applied two instruments: the Pereira’s Professional Preferences Profile and the Professional Identity Questionnaire of Arias et al. The results indicate that the engineering students have professional preferences according to its professional field, but a considerable percentage is located in the category of non-defined (24.17%). Moreover, the 18.22% of students of Industrial Engineering have professional preferences for Business Administration, and the majority of them have a professional identity with scientific and technical orientation, regarding object of study, methods and professional goals. En el presente estudio se analizan las preferencias profesionales de los estudiantes de cuatro carreras de ingeniería de una universidad privada de Arequipa, en relación con ciertos aspectos de la identidad profesional. Positive correlational shift between crevicular antimicrobial peptide LL-37, pain and periodontal status following non-surgical periodontal therapy. A pilot study

    Get PDF
Background: Periodontitis has a high prevalence and uncertain recurrence. Unlike the pro-inflammatory cytokine profile, little is known about the anti-inflammatory cytokine and antimicrobial peptide overview following treatment. The present study aimed to evaluate if any of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37, interleukin (IL) 4, 10 and 6 together with the volume of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and total protein concentration in GCF could be used as correlative biomarkers for the severity in periodontitis as well as prognostic factors in the management of the disease. Methods: Forty-five participants were recruited and allocated to the healthy (15), Stage I-II (15) or Stage III-IV periodontitis (15) group. Along with periodontal examination, GCF samples were obtained at baseline and 4–6 weeks following scaling and root planing (SRP) for the periodontitis groups. GCF samples were analyzed by ELISA kits to quantify LL-37 and IL-4, -6 and − 10. One-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s test was used to determine differences among the three groups at baseline. Two-way ANOVA followed by Sidak’s post-hoc test was used to compare between pre- and post-SRP in the two periodontitis groups. Results: The amount of GCF volume was significantly correlated to the severity of periodontitis and decreased following SRP, particularly in the Stage III-IV group (p < 0.01). The levels of LL-37, IL-6, and pain and periodontal clinical parameters were significantly correlated to the severity of periodontitis. IL-4 and IL-10 in the periodontitis groups were significantly lower than the healthy group (p < 0.0001) and barely improved following SRP up to the level of the healthy group. Conclusions: With the limitations of this study, crevicular LL-37 may be a candidate for a biomarker of periodontitis and the associated pain upon probing. Trial registration: The study was registered in clinical trials.gov, with number NCT04404335, dated 27/05/2020

Síndrome de Burnout en profesores de escuela y universidad: un análisis psicométrico y comparativo en la ciudad de Arequipa

    Get PDF
In the present study, the manifestations of burnout syndrome in school and university professors living in the city of Arequipa were analyzed comparatively. A total of 413 intentionally selected professors were evaluated, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory was applied. It  yielded adequate levels of reliability for our sample and three factors obtained through confirmatory factorial analysis, confirming the theory of Maslach and Jackson (1981). It was found that there are significant differences in terms of sex, marital status and teaching level of teachers, resulting in higher levels of exhaustion for female teachers at school level and moderate levels of depersonalization for university teachers, in whom negative correlations were obtained regarding the number of children and the  burnout syndrome.
