Sumak Kawsay: entre el postdesarrollismo occidental y la Filosofía Andina

Objective: this review article suggests a state of the art approach to the philosophical, ethical, and phenomenological conception of the Sumak Kawsay concept in Kichwa Ecuadorian language in order to shed light on the dark areas in the contemporary discussion of the said concept. Method: a qualitative content analysis was carried out to group and systematize roughly 120 academic articles, book chapters, master's theses, and doctoral theses on the Sumak Kawsay concept from 2008 to 2018. Results: seven macro ways to interpret the Sumak Kawsay concept were identified, namely: a) as a way of life; b) as a post utopia; c) as an input of the Good-Living; d) as a neoextractivisim experiment; e) as an Andean Philosophy issue; f) as a political discursive construction; and g) as a decolonial device. Conclusions: the Sumak Kawsay concept has positioned itself in the national and international intelligentsia discourse as well as in the Ecuadorian Indigenous Movement discourse; particularly as a political, cultural, and decolonial project that can and must be achieved. The Sumak Kawsay interpretation as a way of life and is perhaps the most important one since it connects the Westernist interpretations with the ones of the culturalism style.

Did the Popsicle Melt? Preschoolers’ Performance in an Episodic-like Memory Task

Episodic memory has been tested in non-human animals using depletion paradigms that assess recollection for the “what,” “where” and “when” (i.e., how long ago). This paradigm has not been used with human children, yet doing so would provide another means to explore their episodic memory development. Using a depletion paradigm, preschool-aged children were presented in two trials with a preferred food that was only edible after a short interval and a less preferred food that was edible after the short and long intervals. Younger (mean= 40 months) and older (mean=65 months) children tended to choose their preferred food after the short intervals, but did not switch to selecting their less-preferred food after the long intervals. Importantly, their choices did not differ with age. Although older children better remembered “what”, “where” and “what is where” than did younger children, neither age group successfully estimated “how long ago” an event occurred. Finally, both age groups spontaneously recalled information about Trial 1. We also analyzed the relation between the different measures used in the study but no clear patterns emerged. Results are discussed with respect to the cognitive mechanisms necessary to succeed in depletion paradigms and the measurement of episodic memory more broadly

Performance Benefits Of Reward Choice: A Procedural Justice Perspective

    Get PDF
Reward choice – employees\u27 ability to exercise control over the formal rewards they receive from work – is an important part of many HRM strategies. Reward choice is expected to increase employee performance, but conflicting findings highlight the need to better understand how and when it will do so. Based on fairness heuristic theory, we predicted that procedural justice mediates reward choice\u27s influence on performance, and that choice attractiveness moderates that influence. A field study and an experiment both had similar results, supporting our predictions. Reward choice can increase performance by as much as 40 per cent, but only when the available choices are attractive to employees

“The world has always been like a comic book world to me”: Examining representations of queer stories in comics and other media

Engagement with media has become the most popular form of leisure in our lives with approximately 40% of leisure time being dedicated to television viewing alone (Mullen, 2020). The consumption of books, graphic novels/comics, videogames, movies, and TV have only increased since the start COVID-19 pandemic (Doherty, Millar & Misener, 2020; Reid, 2021). Due to media’s significant impact on our cultural beliefs, it is becoming increasingly important to be conscious of the messages being relayed particularly those around queer identities as they have historically been reduced to unjust portrayals or erased from media entirely (Gerber et al., 2002; Meyer, 2020; Key, 2015; Corey, 2017). This thesis seeks to examine the ways media, and specifically comic books/graphic novels, represent queer identities. In this thesis, I use a text, context, paratext analysis to explore a graphic novel, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars; secondary data that examines the lived experiences of bisexual women living in Waterloo Region; and social media posts discussing the queer representation in my chosen graphic novel. I highlight the importance of continuing to include just and meaningful queer representations in mainstream media

Removal of phenolic compounds from synthetic wastewater using soybean peroxidase.

Soybean peroxidase (SBP), an acidic peroxidase which is isolated from the hulls of the bean, catalyzes the oxidation of various aqueous aromatic compounds in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The polymers formed during the reaction have a lower solubility than their monomeric precursors, and are readily precipitated from solution. Experiments were conducted to investigate the efficiency of using SBP to remove several different phenolic compounds from unbuffered synthetic wastewater All tests were carried out in continuously stirred batch reactors. The phenol derivatives studied included parent phenol, chlorinated phenols and methyl phenols. The optimum conditions to achieve at least 95% removal of the phenolic compounds were determined for the following parameters: pH, SBP dose in the absence and presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), hydrogen peroxide to substrate ratio, and PEG dose. Experimental results showed that SBP efficiently removed aromatic compounds from wastewater in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. An increase in the hydrogen peroxide to substrate ratio beyond the optimum resulted in enzyme inactivation, which reduced the substrate removal efficiency. The optimum pH for different phenolic compounds ranged from 5.5 to 8. For each substrate, the optimum enzyme dose varied significantly with the lowest being 0.015 U/mL for bisphenol A and with the highest being 0.60 U/mL for phenol. The studies showed that PEG reduced the amount of SBP required for 95% removal of the substrate by up to 60 times, as was the case for bisphenol A. For all substrates, except p-cresol, an increase in PEG dose beyond the optimum did not significantly increase or decrease the removal efficiency.Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
