Wall Street and Progressivism
On the margins of the partisan political divide is a groundswell of anti-corporate rhetoric conjuring images of an unbridled, unregulated, and uncontrollable corporate America. This Essay considers a casualty of this progressive imagery: serious legislative and regulatory reforms to ensure corporate accountability. Demonizing all corporations does little to promote a progressive reform agenda. More important, the absence of evidence-based policies and legislative reforms raises concerns, especially in light of the history of twentieth-century progressive thought and commitment to the role of science in law making
Optical implementation of systolic array processing
Algorithms for matrix vector multiplication are implemented using acousto-optic cells for multiplication and input data transfer and using charge coupled devices detector arrays for accumulation and output of the results. No two dimensional matrix mask is required; matrix changes are implemented electronically. A system for multiplying a 50 component nonnegative real vector by a 50 by 50 nonnegative real matrix is described. Modifications for bipolar real and complex valued processing are possible, as are extensions to matrix-matrix multiplication and multiplication of a vector by multiple matrices
A systematic review of the characteristics and needs of older prisoners
The older prisoner population is growing faster than the older general population and placing a strain on prisons. Much of the existing literature focusses on the healthcare needs of, or in-prison initiatives for, older prisoners. Typically, these are responsive and lacking an evidence-based understanding of the characteristics and needs of this group. There is a need to review and understand what the existing evidence base concludes about the needs of this population.
This paper presents a systematic review of the existing literature on the needs and characteristics of older people in contact with the criminal justice system. After a thorough search and selection process, 21 papers, from 2002 onwards, were included in the final analysis. The review process was structured through PICOs and reported using PRISMA.
The contradictions within the existing evidence base make it difficult to reach firm conclusions about the needs and characteristics of older prisoners. What is clear from the existing research are the relatively high levels of need. There is also some consensus that where older people commit homicide the victim is likely to be an intimate partner. Overall, there a need for consistent recording and reporting of characteristics and demographics and more systematic study design.
This paper has highlighted the key findings and limitations in the existing literature. Future research should make use of secondary official data sources to provide a clearer understanding of the characteristics of this group, their routes to prison, their needs, and challenges they present
Counterintuitive findings from a qualitative study of mental health in English women’s prisons
This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited in International Journal of Prisoner Health on 01/12/2016, available online: https://doi.org/10.1108/IJPH-05-2016-0013
The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Purpose
Large numbers of women in prison report significant emotional and mental health problems, and there is evidence to suggest that the prison environment may exacerbate the incidence and severity of these issues (Armour, 2012). However, there has been limited exploration of the extent to which women’s mental health problems exist prior to incarceration, whether symptoms first occur in incarceration, and how incarceration affects this. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
In-depth interviews were conducted with 43 women incarcerated in three English prisons and a thematic analysis of the data was conducted. Review of official prison records provided a form of data triangulation.
Findings
Analysis of the data revealed that while many women who experienced mental health issues in prison had experienced these issues in the past, a number of women reported first experiencing mental health and emotional problems only after entering prison. Although these problems often recede, this demonstrates the significant impact that entering prison can have upon the mental health of women. Unusually, the data highlighted many positive experiences of support within prison. However, there was some lack of consistency in the treatment and support offered to women.
Originality/value
The data presented here are in many ways more positive than previous research and – as opposed to much of the existing literature that simply states the prevalence women’s issues in prison – provides insight into the lived experiences of women in prison. This paper documents how prison can present an opportunity for women to engage with treatment, but there is a need for a clearer understanding of women’s needs and consistent and appropriate support
Photoluminescence dispersion as a probe of structural inhomogeneity in silica
We report time-resolved photoluminescence spectra of point defects in
amorphous silicon dioxide (silica), in particular the decay kinetics of the
emission signals of extrinsic Oxygen Deficient Centres of the second type from
singlet and directly-excited triplet states are measured and used as a probe of
structural inhomogeneity. Luminescence activity in sapphire
(-AlO) is studied as well and used as a model system to compare
the optical properties of defects in silica with those of defects embedded in a
crystalline matrix. Only for defects in silica, we observe a variation of the
decay lifetimes with emission energy and a time dependence of the first moment
of the emission bands. These features are analyzed within a theoretical model
with explicit hypothesis about the effect introduced by the disorder of
vitreous systems. Separate estimations of the homogenous and inhomogeneous
contributions to the measured emission linewidth are obtained: it is found that
inhomogeneous effects strongly condition both the triplet and singlet
luminescence activities of oxygen deficient centres in silica, although the
degree of inhomogeneity of the triplet emission turns out to be lower than that
of the singlet emission. Inhomogeneous effects appear to be negligible in
sapphire
The Cadet Athlete Physical Training Intervention (CAPTI): A 16-week periodized program to remediate underdeveloped tactical athletes at a senior military college
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 1083-1091, 2024. Approximately half of military recruits fail the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), and 70% of all injuries in the US military are musculoskeletal in nature. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether underdeveloped musculoskeletal and cardiovascular fitness levels and subsequent APFT scores of senior military college cadets could be improved by a novel, evidence-based Cadet Athlete Physical Training Intervention (CAPTI) compared to the current Remedial Physical Training program (RPT). Cadets failing the APFT (total score \u3c 180, or \u3c 60 in scored sit-ups, pushups or run time, respectively) participated in a 16-week remedial training program including either CAPTI (periodized full body calisthenic and varied-technique cardiovascular training, along with mobility training and mental health and wellbeing sessions), or a traditional, event-specific remedial training program (RPT). CAPTI was randomly assigned to one of three battalions, while the others received RPT. One hundred and thirty-eight cadets (n = 70 CAPTI, n = 68 RPT) participated in the study. After training, 82.9% (n = 58) of CAPTI passed the APFT compared to 27.9% (n = 19) of RPT. Paired t-tests demonstrated significant improvement (p \u3c 0.01) for CAPTI in total APFT scores (42 ± 31.5 points), sit-ups (13.8 ± 9.4) pushups (6.5 ± 11) and run time (83 ± 123s). In RPT, significant improvements (p \u3c 0.01) were noted in total APFT scores (16 ± 27.8), sit-ups (3.3 ± 6.7) pushups (3.69 ± 8.0) and run time (43 ± 127s). Between-group analyses demonstrated CAPTI had significantly higher improvements compared to RPT in APFT total score (p \u3c 0.01) and sit-ups (p \u3c 0.01). Higher perceived program enjoyment was also demonstrated for CAPTI when compared to RPT (P \u3c 0.01). The CAPTI program could help address the military’s physical readiness and musculoskeletal injury problem by incorporating evidence-based, wellness-focused, periodized training as part of a remedial physical training model
