    Avaliação do estatuto de conservação da flora endémica de Cabo Verde

Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2014As ilhas da Macaronésia (Açores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canárias e Cabo Verde) estão englobadas no Hotspot de Biodiversidade da Bacia do Mediterrâneo, devido ao elevado grau de endemismos que apresentam. Das ca. 900 espécies de plantas endémicas que ocorrem na Macaronésia, a maioria exibe uma distribuição geográfica muito limitada, o que pode implicar um elevado risco de extinção. No caso de Cabo Verde, são conhecidos atualmente 94 taxa de plantas endémicas, que necessitam de conservação e proteção urgente. O principal objetivo deste trabalho é atualizar a Primeira Lista Vermelha de Cabo Verde, publicada por Leyens e Lobin (1996), através da avaliação do estatuto de conservação da flora endémica. Este estudo segue os critérios e categorias da IUCN e utiliza o software RAMAS Red List. Os resultados indicam que a maioria das plantas endémicas de Cabo Verde tem uma distribuição geográfica muito limitada, sendo que metade dos taxa têm áreas de ocupação e extensões de ocorrência inferiores a 20km2 e 200km2, respetivamente. Além disso, são comparadas duas atitudes em relação ao parâmetro tolerância ao risco, nomeadamente, RT = 0,5 para uma atitude neutra e RT = 0,6 para uma atitude evidenciaria. Com RT = 0,5, cerca de 77% dos taxa foram classificados como Criticamente em Perigo e 10% como em Perigo. Por outro lado, com RT =0, 6 obteve-se uma melhor discriminação nas diferentes categorias de ameaça: 29% dos taxa foi classificado como Criticamente em Perigo, 40% como em Perigo e 8% como Vulnerável. Neste estudo propõem-se que o ajuste de uma atitude em relação ao parâmetro tolerância ao risco (RT) pode ser um método importante a considerar na aplicação dos critérios IUCN em pequenas regiões, como é o caso das lhas de Cabo Verde, sem alterar as regras de avaliação da IUCN.The Macaronesia Islands (Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canaries and Cape Verde) are included in the Mediterranean Basin Biodiversity Hotspot due to their high degree of endemism. Of the 900 endemic plant species that occur in the Macaronesia Region, the majority exhibit a very limited geographical distribution, which can imply a high risk of extinction. In Cape Verde Islands, 94 endemic plants are recognized to require urgent conservation and protection. The main objective of this study is to update the First Red List of the Cape Verde Islands, published by Leyens and Lobin (1996) by assessing the conservation status of the endemic flora. This study follows the IUCN categories and criteria and uses RAMAS Red List software. The results revealed that most of the Cape Verde endemic plants display a limited geographic range, with half having areas of occupancy and extents of occurrence of less than 20 km2 and 200 km2, respectively. Also, we compared two different attitudes to Risk Tolerance, namely RT=0.5 for risk neutral, and RT=0.6 for an evidentiary attitude.. With RT=0.5, about 77% of the taxa were classified as Critically Endangered) and 10% Endangered. With RT= 0.6, a better discrimination of t threatened categories was obtained, with 29% of the taxa classified as Critically Endangered, 40% as Endangered, and 8% as Vulnerable. In this study, it is propose that adjusts in attitudes toward risk (RT) can be an important method to be applied in small regions, like it is the case of the Cape Verde Islands, without altering the IUCN rules

The purpose of this study was to examine how 12 months of storage in bottle affected the evolution of antioxidantactivity (DPPH, FRAP and ABTS assays), total phenolic index (TPI) and low molecular weight (LMW)compounds content of the WSs aged through alternative technology using three micro-oxygenationlevels (MOX) and nitrogen control (N). Results revealed the ability of phenolic compounds fromaged WSs to scavenge free radicals during storage in bottle.     Diversity of Legumes in the Cashew Agroforestry System in East Timor (Southeast Asia)

    Cashew is an important export-oriented crop in several tropical countries, often under monocropping systems. Intercropping with legume species is promoted as a sustainable practice, enhancing agricultural productivity and providing nutritional food sources to rural communities. This study aimed to characterize the diversity of Leguminosae (or Fabaceae) in the cashew agroforestry systems of East Timor (Southeast Asia). Fourteen cashew orchards were sampled across the country, and information about leguminous species uses was collected from local populations. About 50 species are commonly part of the country’s cashew agroforestry system, many of them simultaneously used as food, fodder, and in traditional medicine. Six bean species—Cajanus cajan (L.) Huth, Phaseolus lunatus L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi and H.Ohashi, Vigna radiata (L.) R.Wilczek and Vigna unguiculata (L.)Walp.—are largely used as food. The mineral contents of these beans revealed relevant differences between species and, in some cases, between types (seed colour) within species. Periods of hunger and low food variety are frequent in East Timor, reflecting a very poor nutritional state of the population. Knowing and using legumes for local nutrition, as well as for healthcare and well-being, adds great value to these species as components of East Timor cashew agroforestry systemsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Micro-oxygenation level as a key to explain the variation in the colour and chemical composition of wine spirits aged with chestnut wood staves

    A deep knowledge of oxygenation level effect on wine spirits’ ageing is imperative to understand ageing chemistry and to select the most suitable technological option towards quality and sustainability. Following two articles on the same trial, this work focused on colour, total phenolic index (TPI) and basic chemical characteristics of a wine spirit aged in 50 L demijohns with chestnut wood staves together with three micro-oxygenation (MOX) levels. Chromatic characteristics and TPI were monitored over time (8–365 days) while sensory colour, alcoholic strength, acidity, pH and dry extract were assessed at the end of ageing. Results showed that stronger oxygenation promoted significantly faster colour evolution (lower lightness, higher chroma, red, yellow and brown hues) and higher TPI than mild and intermediate oxygenation until 60 days, probably by favouring the leaching of outer wood layers and extraction/degradation of tannins. No significant differences were found between these ageing modalities at 365 days. Outcomes suggest that the stronger MOX is the most suitable modality in terms of quality and sustainability.     Diversification of Aeonium Species Across Macaronesian Archipelagos: Correlations Between Genome-Size Variation and Their Conservation Status

    The rich endemic flora of the Macaronesian Islands places these oceanic archipelagos among the top biodiversity hotspots worldwide. The radiations that have determined the evolution of many of these insular lineages resulted in a wealth of endemic species, many of which occur in a wide range of ecological niches, but show small distribution areas in each of them. Aeonium (Crassulaceae) is the most speciose lineage in the Canary Islands (ca. 40 taxa), and as such can be considered a good model system to understand the diversification dynamics of oceanic endemic floras. The present study aims to assess the genome size variation within Aeonium distribution, i.e., the Macaronesian archipelagos of Madeira, Canaries and Cabo Verde, and analyse it together with information on distribution (i.e., geography and conservation status), taxonomy (i.e., sections), morphological traits (i.e., growth-form), geological data (i.e., island’s geological age), and environmental variables (i.e., altitude, annual mean temperature, and precipitation). Based on extensive fieldwork, a cytogeographic screening of 24 Aeonium species was performed. The conservation status of these species was assessed based on IUCN criteria. 61% of the taxa were found to be threatened (4% Endangered and 57% Vulnerable). For the first time, the genome size of a comprehensive sample of Aeonium across the Macaronesian archipelagos was estimated, and considerable differences in Cx-values were found, ranging from0.984 pg (A. dodrantale) to 2.768 pg (A. gorgoneum). An overall positive correlation between genome size and conservation status was found, with the more endangered species having the larger genomes on average. However, only slight relationships were found between genome size, morphological traits, and environmental variables. These results underscore the importance of characterizing the cytogenomic diversity and conservation status of endemic plants found in Macaronesian Islands, providing, therefore, new data to establish conservation priorities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Here, we investigated an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in a "non-COVID-19" hospital ward unveiled by massive testing, which challenged the reconstruction of transmission chains. The contacts network during the 15-day period before the screening was investigated, and positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA samples were subjected to virus genome sequencing. Of the 245 tested individuals, 48 (21 patients and 27 HCWs) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. HCWs were mostly asymptomatic, but the mortality among patients reached 57.1% (12/21). Phylogenetic reconstruction revealed that all cases were part of the same transmission chain. By combining contact tracing and genomic data, including analysis of emerging minor variants, we unveiled a scenario of silent SARS-CoV-2 dissemination, mostly driven by the close contact within the HCWs group and between HCWs and patients. This investigation triggered enhanced prevention and control measures, leading to more timely detection and containment of novel outbreaks. This study shows the benefit of combining genomic and epidemiological data for disclosing complex nosocomial outbreaks, and provides valuable data to prevent transmission of COVID-19 in healthcare facilities.publishersversionpublishe

    Exploring physicochemical and cytogenomic diversity of African cowpea and common bean

    In sub-Saharan Africa, grain legumes (pulses) are essential food sources and play an important role in sustainable agriculture. Among the major pulse crops, the native cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and introduced common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) stand out. This paper has two main goals. First, we provide a comprehensive view of the available genetic resources of these genera in Africa, including data on germplasm collections and mapping biodiversity-rich areas. Second, we investigate patterns of physicochemical and cytogenomic variation across Africa to explore the geographical structuring of variation between native and introduced beans. Our results revealed that 73 Vigna and 5 Phaseolus species occur in tropical regions of Africa, with 8 countries accounting for more than 20 native species. Conversely, germplasm collections are poorly represented when compared to the worldwide collections. Regarding the nuclear DNA content, on average, V. unguiculata presents significantly higher values than P. vulgaris. Also, V. unguiculata is enriched in B, Mg, S, and Zn, while P. vulgaris has more Fe, Ca, and Cu. Overall, our study suggests that the physicochemical and cytogenomic diversity of native Vigna species is higher than previously thought, representing valuable food resources to reduce food insecurity and hunger, particularly of people living in African developing countriesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
