    Multi-epoch Doppler tomography and polarimetry of QQ Vul

    We present multi-epoch high-resolution spectroscopy and photoelectric polarimetry of the long-period polar (AM Herculis star) QQ Vul. The blue emission lines show several distinct components, the sharpest of which can unequivocally be assigned to the illuminated hemisphere of the secondary star and used to trace its orbital motion. This narrow emission line can be used in combination with Nai-absorption lines from the photosphere of the companion to build a stable long-term ephemeris for the star: inferior conjunction of the companion occurs at HJD = 244 8446.4710(5)+E×0. d 15452011(11). The polarization curves are dissimilar at different epochs, thus supporting the idea of fundamental changes of the accretion geometry, e.g. between one- and two-pole accretion modes. The linear polarization pulses display a random scatter by 0.2 phase units and are not suitable for the determination of the binary period. The polarization data suggest that the magnetic (dipolar) axis has a co-latitude of 23 ◦ , an azimuth of −50 ◦, and an orbital inclination between 50 ◦ and 70 ◦.     Stationary Wavelet Processing and Data Imputing in Myoelectric Pattern Recognition on a Low-Cost Embedded System

    Pattern recognition-based decoding of surface electromyography allows for intuitive and flexible control of prostheses but comes at the cost of sensitivity to in-band noise and sensor faults. System robustness can be improved with wavelet-based signal processing and data imputing, but no attempt has been made to implement such algorithms on real-time, portable systems. The aim of this work was to investigate the feasibility of low-latency, wavelet-based processing and data imputing on an embedded device capable of controlling upper-arm prostheses. Nine able-bodied subjects performed Motion Tests while inducing transient disturbances. Additional investigation was performed on pre-recorded Motion Tests from 15 able-bodied subjects with simulated disturbances. Results from real-time tests were inconclusive, likely due to the low number of disturbance episodes, but simulated tests showed significant improvements in most metrics for both algorithms. However, both algorithms also showed reduced responsiveness during disturbance episodes. These results suggest wavelet-based processing and data imputing can be implemented in portable, real-time systems to potentially improve robustness to signal distortion in prosthetic devices with the caveat of reduced responsiveness for the typically short duration of signal disturbances. The trade-off between large-scale signal corruption robustness and system responsiveness warrants further studies in daily life activities

    Fractal dimension and size scaling of domains in thin films of multiferroic BiFeO3

    We have analyzed the morphology of ferroelectric domains in very thin films of multiferroic BiFeO3. Unlike the more common stripe domains observed in thicker films BiFeO3 or in other ferroics, the domains tend not to be straight, but irregular in shape, with significant domain wall roughening leading to a fractal dimensionality. Also contrary to what is usually observed in other ferroics, the domain size appears not to scale as the square root of the film thickness. A model is proposed in which the observed domain size as a function of film thickness can be directly linked to the fractal dimension of the domains.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    We calculate the exact analytical solution to the domain wall properties in a multiferroic system with two order parameters that are coupled bi-quadratically. This is then adapted to the case of a magnetoelectric multiferroic material such as BiFeO3, with a view to examine critically whether the domain walls can account for the enhancement of magnetization reported for thin films fo this material, in view of the correlation between increasing magnetization and increasing volume fraction of domain walls as films become thinner. The present analysis can be generalized to describe a class of magnetoelectric devices based upon domain walls rather than bulk properties.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Model Atmospheres for Irradiated Stars in pre-Cataclysmic Variables

    Model atmospheres have been computed for M dwarfs that are strongly irradiated by nearby hot companions. A variety of primary and secondary spectral types are explored in addition to models specific to four known systems: GD 245, NN Ser, AA Dor, and UU Sge. This work demonstrates that a dramatic temperature inversion is possible on at least one hemisphere of an irradiated M dwarf and the emergent spectrum will be significantly different from an isolated M dwarf or a black body flux distribution. For the first time, synthetic spectra suitable for direct comparison to high-resolution observations of irradiated M dwarfs in non-mass transferring post-common envelope binaries are presented. The effects of departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium on the Balmer line profiles are also discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 12 pages, 10 figure

    The Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS) currently covers 33,000 deg^2 of the sky in search of transient astrophysical events, with time baselines ranging from 10 minutes to ~7 years. Data provided by the Catalina Sky Survey provides an unequaled baseline against which >4,000 unique optical transient events have been discovered and openly published in real-time.     Mutation-selection equilibrium in finite populations playing a Hawk-Dove game

    We study the evolution of a finite population playing a Hawk-Dove game with mixed strategies. Players have a fixed strategy and their offspring inherit the parental strategy, with a probability u of mutating to another strategy. Payoff in the game is the only variation in fitness among individuals, and a selection coefficient delta measures the importance of the game in the overall fitness. Population evolution is carried out through a Moran process. We compare our numerical simulations with theoretical predictions in earlier work by Tarnita et al. (2009). Our results show that the effect of selection on the abundances of favored strategies is nonlinear, being less intense as d increases. The mutation rate u has an opposite and stronger effect to that of selection. Heuristic theoretical arguments are given in order to explain this nonlinear relationship. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
